Paulo Freire - An Incredible Conversation

Paulo Freire's last public interview, given to Literacy.org in 1996.   It is fascinating to hear him speak.  So much has happened with new literacies, even since this interview in 1996.  We have to wonder what he would say today.  Although perhaps he would still be focused on the fundamentals of literacy, which are still elusive to so much of the world's population.

Thank you - this is wonderful! He was our hero in the adult literacy movement in the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa.

You are welcome, Gabi. I'm researching Freire's work as a way of underpinning the OER movement... if you ever want to bounce some ideas around let me know!
Gabi Witthaus's comment, May 26, 2012 4:58 PM
That's really interesting. I think he was (and still is) a hugely inspirational person. I'll watch this space :-)

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is the new system for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education institutions (HEIs). It will replace the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) and will be completed in 2014. The REF will be undertaken by the four UK higher education funding bodies. woman-in-flight: on being seduced by OfSTED

woman-in-flight: on being seduced by OfSTED | Post 16 Teaching & Learning @ Hull | Scoop.it

In May 2002 Initial Teacher Education (Further Education) at my then University was inspected by OfSTED – mainly 3s and a few 4s meant the area was considered as inadequate: bad department.

We work in a partnership with two other local colleges – and while each are distinct institutions with their own organisational culture, the unit of performance is ‘The Partnership’. The inspection process ties us together; something like a three legged race. Despite OfSTED's designation, there were glimmering shards of fluorescence amidst the devastation.

Don’t Lecture Me: Rethinking How College Students Learn

Don’t Lecture Me: Rethinking How College Students Learn | Post 16 Teaching & Learning @ Hull | Scoop.it

It’s a typical scene: a few minutes before 11:00 on a Tuesday morning and about 200 sleepy-looking college students are taking their seats in a large lecture hall – chatting, laughing, calling out to each other across the aisles. Class begins with a big “shhhh” from the instructor.

This is an introductory chemistry class at a state university. For the next hour and 15 minutes, the instructor will lecture and the students will take notes. By the end of class, the three large blackboards at the front of the room will be covered with equations and formulas.
