Miliband calls for improved integration of immigrants to reduce pressures of a multi-ethnic society

Miliband calls for improved integration of immigrants to reduce pressures of a multi-ethnic society | Possibilities_and_Prejudice_and_Conflict_by_Kehui | Scoop.it

The Labour leader Ed Miliband today called for an overhaul of housing and employment policy – and a concerted drive to teach English to recent immigrants – in an effort to improve integration and reduce the strains of a multi-ethnic society.

He admitted that the last Government made serious mistakes over immigration, underestimating the capacity of some communities to adapt to new arrivals. He also conceded that it had blundered by adopting an open-doors policy for new arrivals from the East European countries that joined the EU in 2004.

Under his proposals, Labour would expect migrants to learn English, tackle landlords who cram newcomers into overcrowded houses and ban recruitment agencies from seeking workers only from particular countries or ethnic groups...

Lie Kehui's insight:

From this article, I can see that Ed Miliband is trying to promote a multi-ethnic society and encourage immigrants to migrate to Great Britain. He believes that these immigrants should be able to speak English or learn how to speak English as this ensures effective communication between everyone and it is fair since both citizens and foreigners understand a common language. This might also create a sense of unity as the people has a common language between them. Problems that are related to ethnics would not occur too.  I wonder if he would be able to succeed in convincing the foreigners to pick up English as another language and accept the locals' weaknesses and difference as being able to accept each other and communicate comfortably is essential in a country.

Ed Miliband feels that everyone in Great Britiasn should know how to speak English and it is important for everyone to know the language. He wants a multi-ethnic society in Great Britian. With everyone being able to speak a common language ideas and opinions could be easily brought up towards creating this multi-ethnic society. It is important for the people to communicate and agree on it. As different opinions may cause conflict in the community

Who are some of Singapore’s most successful business executives? How did they grow their businesses from their humble beginnings?

Lie Kehui's insight:

These rag-to-riches stories all have a common beginning, which are their humble beginnings before they became successful. Everyone has to encounter problems , no matter major setbacks, or even the smallest problems, even these successful people. No doubt, all these noble individuals of these inspirational rag-to-riches stories have gone through obstacles and setbacks in their life. These stories would be really inspirational for those who are currently facing struggles or are disheartened , to pick up their courage and move on in life, no matter which direction or way they go, they would, eventually, achieve success.

I see that their hard work and perseverance has paid off. I think they have worked very hard and went through many obstacles to become successful. I wonder if everyone was like that, would becoming successful be 'successful'?

Jasmine Goh's curator insight, July 2, 2013 12:43 PM

After reading this article, I know that it is not easy to achieve success. The people in this article came from different backgrounds but they all faced setbacks in order to become successful. Although they struggled, these businessmen and businesswomen were able to achieve success through their determination as well as their willingness to sacrifice. Many of them took up several jobs to pay for their education fees. They were humble and had the courage to take risks. Through their hard work and effort, they eventually became successful. I think that if you want to be successful in life, you must have the determination to achieve your goal and believe that you are able to survive through the obstacles faced in the process. These people serve as my role model as they are local and they inspire me to work harder in everything I do. I wonder if they ever had the thought of giving up at the most difficult times in their lives.

Lie Kehui's insight:

Social media and technology have become one of the essential things in our daily lives. Social media is a platform where people can engage in online discussions. It can even update us on the latest news and trends. Through social media, teenagers can develop a sense of fitting and belonging with their community and the world. In this fast-paced country, people have created faster networks which allows people to retrieve news or updates even faster. However, as more people become so used to using their social media on phones or tabs to communicate with others around the world, the chance of them having the confidence to talk to one another face-to-face would be affected as people now have a perception that talking through the net or messaging would be easier to communicate and some might even feel comfortable communicating online compared to communicating verbally. Although the social media is so convenient for us to connect the people around the world, it may also cause us to drift away from reality and further away from our close ones.

Cassandra Woo's curator insight, June 23, 2013 2:11 PM

Social media in Singapore nowadays, is regarded as a category of online media in which people participate, share, network, and engage in discussions with others with similar interests online. Most social media services encourage discussion, feedback, comments, and sharing of information from all interested parties. Through social media, teens are developing a sense of who they are and where they fit into their community and the world. Today, through the Internet and other networked technologies, people have unlimited access to information and a wide array of online technologies in which they may use to access and share that information. Furthermore, the potential for instant connection around the globe is phenomenal. An instant click functions as a door that brings you to a global networked world, in which all these communication and information technologies link people and this provides a platform on which information and influence can flow.

Lee Li Ying's curator insight, June 23, 2013 3:08 PM

Many social-networking sites have been created to allow for better connection and communication with people all around the world. For example, they allow one to keep in touch with his/her loved ones easily and one to organise discussions with others without the need to meet up. As people are becoming more and more IT savvy, with just a move of the cursor over a link and a left-click, it directs you to a global networked world, in which all these communication and information technologies link people and provides a platform on which information and influence can flow.

Huril Jannah Bte Jumari's curator insight, June 26, 2013 12:40 AM

Technology and media have become the few important things in our lives. We depend on it to give us the latest news or trends. This helps us to be updated. However, some may choose to abuse it. Social media may cause a huge damage to us as we Singaporeans avoid communicating face to face. Since there is 3G or even 4G users, they are able to retrieve news faster. Some places have provided free wifi. This enables us to be connected to people living far away, however, it may cause us to be further away than the closer ones around us.

Lie Kehui's insight:

Through this article, I can see the ethnic conflict between the Sinhalese and Tamils in Sri Lanka has a history of more than 100 years. Many lives were lost and millions of them were homeless as a result of this conflict.I think the roots to this problem were because of the unwillingness of one accepting the other races or religions. I feel that everyone should be treated with equality which  prevents any conflicts from happening too.

Jaslyn Si Jia's curator insight, July 3, 2013 6:45 AM

After reading this article, i learnt that there is a conflict between the Tamils and Sinhalese, which took place in Sri Lanka and lasted for over more than 100 years. As the Sinhalese have many benefits like, more job offers and further education opportunities, which the Tamils are unhappy about, thus conflicts between the two ethnic groups started.

I feel that the two ethnic groups shouldn't use violence to solve their problems. Its not worth it to get people injured or killed just to have that problem evened out. Both should talk to each other what their are unhappy about and give in to each other.

I wonder why they want to pursue the matter for such a long time.

Ameer Artsyrup's curator insight, July 5, 2013 8:59 AM

After reading this article, I believe that in order for a country to achieve progress, social, economical and political stability, it has to first achieve muti-ethnic harmony. this is true as different races in a country need to work in cohesion in order to benefit both the country and themselves. This can be seen as Singapore has gone through much progress since the racial riots end. However if racial instability has struck a multi-ethnic country, this will create a lot of problems for the country like major riots and civil wars. this will cause the country to fall in economical and political terms. This can be seen in Sri Lanka as it went through civil war which killed more than 100000 people. This war greatly affect Sri Lanka's economy and causes a major political instability in the country. Due to this, I believe that a country multi-ethnic country must achieve racial harmony in order to benefit everyone.

Evelynkoh's curator insight, July 5, 2013 11:23 AM

Peace and harmony , don't everyone want to stay that way forever? Thats why i seriously wonder , why would people want to start wars , destroying their paradise. In every country's road to success , there must be lots and lots of ups and downs , between its neighboring countries and even between their own people. We're all living in the 21st century , why would we still think in that manner that violence will solve everything? It never will , it will just make the matter worse and cause it to affect a larger amount of people and to last for an even longer period of time. The matter may start of small but because of the use of violence , the matter will start to enlarge and then it would not only be in-between the people who started the matter but the whole country. It will then be reflected badly on the race of the people and also the country. Bit by bit everything will start to fall. Therefore , to me i wonder , why would people want to make things that are simple into things that are so complicated that will cause major damages?

Realization of reaching possibilities

Lie Kehui's insight:

From this article, I can see that as long as one person believes in themselves, with desire to develop their talents and abilities, they might even turn the impossible into many different possibilities. Self-motivation, social and moral support are some of the important key factors in creating one"s desires to develop their talent. Personality traits could also be essential in realizing a talent in themselves.

Teo J-lyn's curator insight, July 3, 2013 3:27 AM

As long as people believe in themselves, they will be able to do better in life, of course, with the support of their family and friends. In order to achieve what they want to, they must have traits like determination , and a sense of motivation.Taking risk and being patient and having self esteem is also very important. I beleive that with a good attitude and personalities, a person can achieve great talents.

Wu Weiyang's curator insight, July 3, 2013 11:21 AM

I see that there are many factors leading to realization of reaching the possibilities such as specific personality traits and environmental factors. However, the most important factor is to believe in yourself, build up your confidence and have the desire to succeed. I think that women can be just as successful as men in the different faculties as long as they realize their talent. I wonder what will happen if the enviroment is not ideal to realize your talent.

Ameer Artsyrup's curator insight, July 5, 2013 9:52 AM

From this flowchart, I can see that there are many factors that may or will lead to the opportunities available. The flowchart also show that rescilience and the desire to excel is also needed to reach the possibilities other than having the skills needed to do so. Another important factor is that we must believe in ourselves in order to achieve the opportunities. Eventhough there are a lot of factors that has not got to do with us we are solely responsible in opening more opportunities.
