Father and Son Business Owners Share Their Secrets to Success | Possibilites, Conflict and Prejudice | Scoop.it
In time for Father's Day, successful father and son business owners share how they balance their personal and professional relationships.

Darien Tan's insight:

I can see that fathers who have their own business will like to pass down to their own son to take the lead role in their company because they trust their son will give in their best to carry on with their business even when they decide to retire and would obviously hand over their companies to their child. In this article, the father and the son tried to cope with the challenges of running a business together and offer advice for other entrepreneurial families. I think that both Rick and Jeff is very helpful and thoughtful as they even suggested some suggestions to help others to overcome the challenges they might meet in their business. After having successful business, they tried to help others who are not very successful. After reading this article, I feel that every child should learn from Jeff because one day it might be our turn to handle a big company like him, knowing how to lead and now let the company fall. I wonder why is it hard for some people to take over their father buisness.

Chia Yi Xuan's curator insight, June 29, 2013 11:27 AM

After reading this article, my thoughts are that there are many ways to be successful in doing something. The father in this article trusts his son and gave him the role of CEO in the company, this led to their success in their business. I also think that attitude plays an important role in their success, the son said "I want to be in my position because I'm the right person." this shows that he got the determination and drive towards success and therefore he is working very hard towards his goal.I learnt that success is possible with hard work and the right attitude.

Hui Li's comment, June 30, 2013 1:23 AM
After reading this article I feel that having the right attitude to do something is very important it helps to strive towards the goal you want and not give up easily. The father entrusted his company to his son because his son showed his father that he can do it through his determination and work attitude. I believe that everyone should have this mindset to achieve something. I wonder if SIngaporean students will have this mindset and not give up easily?

Miliband calls for improved integration of immigrants to reduce pressures of a multi-ethnic society

Miliband calls for improved integration of immigrants to reduce pressures of a multi-ethnic society | Possibilites, Conflict and Prejudice | Scoop.it

The Labour leader Ed Miliband today called for an overhaul of housing and employment policy – and a concerted drive to teach English to recent immigrants – in an effort to improve integration and reduce the strains of a multi-ethnic society.

He admitted that the last Government made serious mistakes over immigration, underestimating the capacity of some communities to adapt to new arrivals. He also conceded that it had blundered by adopting an open-doors policy for new arrivals from the East European countries that joined the EU in 2004.

Under his proposals, Labour would expect migrants to learn English, tackle landlords who cram newcomers into overcrowded houses and ban recruitment agencies from seeking workers only from particular countries or ethnic groups...

Darien Tan's insight:

I can see that Ed Miliband is trying to promote a multi-ethnic society and have more immigrants in Great Britain. He believes that they should be able to speak English to ensure effective communication and everyone understands so that both citizens and foreigners can be treated fairly and able to communicate with each other. I think he does not want to seperate between different communities in the country hence it make him a good influence for everyone to follow. I wonder if he will be able to succeed in convincing everyone to speak English instead of their foreign languages and accept one another's difference and weakness, abling to communicate with each other is an important thing.

Ed Miliband feels that everyone in Great Britiasn should know how to speak English and it is important for everyone to know the language. He wants a multi-ethnic society in Great Britian. With everyone being able to speak a common language ideas and opinions could be easily brought up towards creating this multi-ethnic society. It is important for the people to communicate and agree on it. As different opinions may cause conflict in the community

People Present Themselves in Ways That Counteract Prejudices Toward Their Group

People Present Themselves in Ways That Counteract Prejudices Toward Their Group | Possibilites, Conflict and Prejudice | Scoop.it

Individuals from stigmatized groups choose to present themselves in ways that counteract the specific stereotypes and prejudices associated with their group, according to a new study published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

“People often think of prejudice as a simple, single phenomenon — general dislike for members of other groups — but recent research suggests that there are actually multiple, distinct types of prejudice,” says graduate student Rebecca Neel, who conducted the research with her advisor Steven Neuberg and post-doctoral scholar Samantha Neufeld at Arizona State University.

Darien Tan's insight:

Prejudice is being shown in many ways. For example, prejudice against people who are obese, are a certain race or are a certain religion. All these make people think that they are different from each other and treat them in a differently. I think that prejudice is able to hurt someone's feelings and they maybe emotionally unstable adue to those prejudices. I think that this is also very unfair as you may be treating somebody in a way that they do not deserve it. I wonder who started prejudice as it is bad and unfair to the people around us.

Alif's curator insight, June 28, 2013 6:19 AM

There are more than one type of prejudice. This kind of prejudice is very obvious. Such common are prejudice against a specific religion or against people who are obese. With the prejudice still intact in certain minds, humans may no longer live as one. People who go against a certain religion will try to live as far as possible.Simple prejudice like ignoring non-beautiful girls or non-handsome boys is very common. This may lead these left out people to feel depressed or even make them think that their life is unfair and there is no reason for them to live any longer. People may use prejudice as a form of entertainment to joke around but have they thought if they themself was being prejudicised, how will they feel. Leaving prejudice is one step closer to a having a happy environment. I strongly feel prejudice should stop.

Bernice Phua Rui Yi's curator insight, July 2, 2013 10:27 AM

There are many different types of prejudices. Some of which could be things like being of a different race, culture and sharing different religious beliefs. It could also be prejudice like being against people who are not as thin compared to them. I personally think that it is not necessary to judge or look down on people. We should all learn to accept one another for who we are and know that doing such things doesn't bring any good to others, all it does is bring them down and we never what they may end up doing.

Teoh Jun Fang's curator insight, July 5, 2013 10:16 AM

(See-Think-Wonder) From this article, I can see that there are lots of different kinds of prejudice and they are expressed in many ways. Prejudice caused many people to have low self-esteem. It made people feel upset with their flaws. Honestly, I feel that prejudice will never stop around the world unless people stop judging one another and are willing to accept their flaws and how different they are from others. I think that everyone is unique in their own ways no matter what. I wonder how the world would be like if there was no prejudice?

How Singapore creates its economic miracles | Globe and Mail

How Singapore creates its economic miracles | Globe and Mail | Possibilites, Conflict and Prejudice | Scoop.it

When Gregory Wade left Research In Motion’s Asia Pacific headquarters here last fall, the logical thing to do might have been to pack up his family and head home to his native shore of British Columbia.

Instead, the eight-year expat joined an equity firm and continued preaching the economic miracle of Singapore, coaching Canadian firms looking to set up shop in the region as a vice-president for The Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Singapore.

“You will sense a vibe of growth, of energy, a sense of entrepreneurship and the desire and interest to create new and innovative products and services,” said Mr. Wade, who is now managing director of mobility at InflexionPoint Acquisition Corp. “I didn’t get that same vibe in Canada, regardless of locale.”

For a city-state with no resources, limited land and a small population, creating the explosive growth and development of the past half-century has meant running it like a corporation – using highly trained, highly paid leaders, inviting the world’s best and brightest to its work force with an open-door policy, and with a near-zero tolerance for dissent among the masses.

The result is a planned, modern economy with efficient public services, an educated population and a per-capita share of gross domestic product of more than $60,000 (U.S.), the highest in Southeast Asia. Singapore ranks No. 2 on the World Economic Forum’s global competitiveness rankings.

Today, as Singapore nears the 50th anniversary of its independence, the original economic miracle is slowing. Hit hard by the Asian financial crisis, the dot-com bust, the outbreak of SARS in 2003 and then global recession in 2008, the city-state is at an economic turning point.

Darien Tan's insight:

I can see that the Singapore’s economy is getting better and better slowly however, recently it met some crisis. There are many different crises in other countries especially in Europe which might affect Singapore economy. Even though there are lots of crisis happening in Singapore, many companies and organization from all over the world are still willing to set up and develop in Singapore. That makes me think that we are lucky to have those countries to help us out. However, I think that Singapore should be independent and do something to help itself despite of all those limitations instead of depending on other countries for help and still not proud of their own country at times. I wonder what will happen if other countries did not help Singapore.

Teo J-lyn's curator insight, July 3, 2013 3:13 AM

I see that the economy of Singapore has hetting better but recently, the progress hadbecome slower because of many things that happened which hit hard on our economy. Many countries were affected, including Singapore as our economy relies mainly on exports. Despite this, many big organisations and businesses are willing to set up companies and develop in Singapore. I think that there is still alot that Singapore can do and offer despite the challenges it is facing and the limitations it has.Eventhough things may have been slowing down, Singapore still receives offers. The reason Singapore is slowing down is because since Singapore is such a small country, the amount of natural resources we have here is very limited. Despite the limited and small space, Singapore is not affected as there are still people who wants to work and start businesses here. This shows that Singapore has done a great job making itself known to the world, and has already found a space for itself.

Ameer Artsyrup's curator insight, July 5, 2013 10:44 AM

After reading this article, I found out that Singapore's econmy has boomed since its independence. However this is only due as Singapore has traded with other countries in order to survive. On one end, this sounds great as Singapore is thriving due to this but, on the other end, this is also worrying as this clearly shows that Singapore is dependent on other countries in order to survive. This clearly shows us that Singapore is extremely vulnerable. However after ssingapore survived the SARS, H5N1 and the H1N1 period, I believe that the future of this nation is bright.

Evelynkoh's curator insight, July 5, 2013 11:13 AM

As we all know , Singapore is a young nation which has been rediscovered and rebuilt a few years ago. Singapore may be small and that it doesn't have any nature resources but it's position in the world is what makes it stands out. It started of as a port and has slowly been created to how it is now , a successful country , the country which practices meritocracy which is known worldwide. All of these wouldn't have happened if our forefather's didn't protect and built our country well. This is their results of their hard work. However , as it is , Singapore is a very tiny red dot on the globe and is extremely vulnerable to everything that's happening in the world. However , no matter how many crisis we faced we're still standing as strong as ever because we didn't give up , we singaporeans all have a sense of belonging and we all fought and stood with singapore when it was weak. Nowadays , competition is really getting more and more intense as the days , the hours , the minutes and the seconds past. Its like between everyone and everything , there's a competition going on , no matter big or small , all of us are under intense pressure , trying our very best to be the victor. This is why , i hope that this article which is published would make an impact to all its reader's out there , slapping them in their face that they would definitely have to step up and work together to maintain how everything is now. Once they stop and start turning lazy , everything will just go down and i really don't want to think how it will be then. Thus i hope that since singapore has survived so many major crisis , we would forever be like this , the bright and successful nation which everyone looks up to.

Mind-controlled devices reveal future possibilities

Mind-controlled devices reveal future possibilities | Possibilites, Conflict and Prejudice | Scoop.it

Bin He, Ph.D., leads a team of scientists and engineers who are working on a device that allows human subjects to control the flight of small, remote-controlled helicopters using only their minds. The researchers believe this technology has the potential to restore mobility and independence to individuals suffering from neuromuscular disorders and paralysis, and could enhance the natural motor functions of pilots, surgeons and ordinary citizens.

Darien Tan's insight:

I can see that there are many different ways to improve our daily life as technology is getting more advance generation by generation. With technology, people now can even find out about their future. Bin He, Ph.D, leads a team of scientists and engineers who are working on a device that allows human to control it just by mind. I think that this invention is really interesting and useful because things can be easily done without the use of hands which is suitable for people who are like handicapped.

I could refer form the article above that there are various types of way to improve our daily life using the capabilities of technology. It mention about this group of scientists and engineers working on a experiment that allows humans to control certain type of device by just using their minds without the movement of their physical body. By the end of this article , I hope that this invention could be used in the future to help those who are physically incapable to do something that they always wanted to.
Shameerza's curator insight, June 28, 2013 6:32 AM

From this article, i can see that Bin He, Ph.D, leads a team of scientists and engineers who are working on a device that allows human to control it by mind. I think that this invention is really fascinating and useful. By planting electrodes in the brain, by a single thought, it allows the beholder to control and move things. I wonder if this is powerful enough to lift heavy objects. In conclusion, this great invention, may lead into a greater and improved human technology in which will give us the power to levitate, move and control objects with only the power of a thought without using strength.

Tan Wenjia Polar Beary's curator insight, June 29, 2013 5:42 AM

Using see think wonder. The articles talkes about how Bin He ph D, and his teams of scientisits and engineers work on the device that allows human subjects to control the flight of small, remote-controlled helicopters using only their mind. This shows that we can turn our imaginations into possibilities. I feel that this article can influence younger generation to turn their imaginations into reality.
