How to Start Exercising When You're Already Overweight

How to Start Exercising When You're Already Overweight | Positive Health and You Being-Well | Scoop.it

Healthy living isn't easy. For some, it comes naturally, but for those folks who are already overweight—large enough that it's difficult or even painful to do what thinner people can do—it's even tougher to get started. Here are some tips to help.

Ever since I was a teenager I've struggled with my weight. Not necessarily from a health perspective—I've always been pretty healthy, but I've struggled because I want to look better, feel more energetic, and get all of those great benefits that fitness offers. However, when you're already overweight, a lot of the activities that other people just pick up without trying are either impossible or feel like death. High Intensity Interval Training? Hot yoga? Insanity? Crossfit? Even jogging? You've got to be kidding....

Presentation for Personal Development / Lesson 1 – Know Thyself

Many people feel great urgency these days around personal growth. They want to become better human beings and want to change something in their life. Realizing that life is not satisfactory, that the necessary fulfillment and happiness lacks, that we are not at peace with life, is the first step to a new awareness. An awareness that questions our former values, beliefs and ideas of life. And we come to the conclusion that everything we considered as important in our life is indeed meaningless.

Art, Inc.: A Field Guide to the Psychology and Practicalities of Becoming a Successful Artist ~ Brain Pickings

Art, Inc.: A Field Guide to the Psychology and Practicalities of Becoming a Successful Artist ~ Brain Pickings | Positive Health and You Being-Well | Scoop.it

by Maria Popova

"How to master the business of art without buying into the toxic myth that doing so makes you a lesser artist."

"“Art is a form of consciousness,” Susan Sontagwrote in her diary. But for many working artists, who straddle the balance between creativity and commerce, art swells into a form of uncomfortable self-consciousness — something compounded by a culture that continually pits the two as a tradeoff. Cartoonist Hugh MacLeod captured this perfectly in proclaiming that “art suffers the moment other people start paying for it.” Such sentiments, argues artist Lisa Congdonin Art, Inc.: The Essential Guide for Building Your Career as an Artist (public library), are among the most toxic myths we subscribe to as a culture and reflect a mentality immeasurably limiting for creative people."

Why You Should Go Outside (right after you read this)

Why You Should Go Outside (right after you read this) | Positive Health and You Being-Well | Scoop.it

"Turns out, there’s proof communing with nature makes you healthier and happier"

Renowned yogi Eoin Finn says the positive energy you feel among ocean waves or towering Redwoods can lead to greater Zen and health. And research agrees.

Finn says that the “vibrational transcendent energy” that yogis try to tap on the mat is often the same feeling you get when immersed in nature, when a brilliant, beautiful environment makes you suddenly feel super thankful and…small. “Yoga is the systematic reduction of ego. When our egos diminish, we open up to a greater consciousness. That consciousness is a connection I feel when I’m out in nature—and that’s the basis of health and spirituality.”

Change Happens In 5 Stages

Change Happens In 5 Stages | Positive Health and You Being-Well | Scoop.it

When two psychologists, Carlo DiClemente and James O. Prochaska, studied people who were trying to quit smoking, they discovered five stages that can be used to assess a person’s readiness to make change. Their ideas about the stages of change have been applied to people who are creating a variety of changes in their lives, whether they are looking to establish new behavior or extinguish old habits.

Their research has become paramount to the Transtheoretical Model of Change. It shows that trying to force someone to change before he’s ready isn’t likely to be productive. For example, most New Year’s resolutions don’t last because people don’t go through the stages of change. Instead, they try to create change based on a date on the calendar, which may not coincide with a true readiness to transform.

Article by +Deepak Chopra

Expanded awareness brings success. Awareness can be expanded in many ways. The most important are these:

- Meditation
- Silent reflection and contemplation
- Communing with Nature
- Seeking higher guidance
- Associating with admired people who serve as mentors and models
- Studying the great saints, sages, and seers
- Identifying with your inner self and not your external achievements
- Living by a higher vision of life, and of who you are.
- Placing importance on our own inner growth and spending time on it.
- Keeping up with the most far-seeing thinkers in your field.
- Being open to change, not fearing the unknown.
- Being comfortable with uncertainty and the rewards it offers.
