Can We Teach Kids Compassion?

Can We Teach Kids Compassion? | Positive futures | Scoop.it

As a nation of educators, parents, children and their family members – how can we come to terms with that event? Is there a response educators and communities could make that would help us all to heal? And is there a way to reduce the number of people in our world who are capable of taking actions like those Adam Lanza took?

These concerns brought me back to the question of whether compassion could be taught. From my spiritual training as a Buddhist in a Tibetan lineage, I knew beyond doubt that the answer is YES. Training in compassion has been practiced in the East for thousands of years. Practices to awaken and strengthen compassion for all beings, in all circumstances, are the foundation of every young monk and nun’s education – and even a middle-class, middle-aged guy like me can benefit significantly from them.

EU will offer every young person employment or training within four months of leaving school | Positive futures | Scoop.it

The European Commission has launched their latest Youth Employment Package requesting a guarantee from all Member States that every young person receives a quality offer of employment or training within four months of leaving school, or of being unemployed. The proposal will make full use of EU funding and in particular the European Social Fund (ESF), which was set up to reduce the differences in prosperity and living standards across EU Member States and regions.

The new Youth Employment Package is part of the initiative Rethinking Education - designed to reduce the youth unemployment rate. Research has shown that the figure is close to 23 % across the European Union, yet more than 2 million vacancies remain unfilled.

The Brain’s Ability to Look Within: A Secret to Well-Being

The Brain’s Ability to Look Within: A Secret to Well-Being | Positive futures | Scoop.it

In a collaboration with professors Zindel Segal and Adam Anderson at the University of Toronto, the study compared exteroceptive (externally focused) attention to interoceptive (internally focused) attention in the brain. Participants were instructed to either focus on the sensation of their breath (interoceptive attention) or to focus their attention on words on a screen (exteroceptive attention).  Contrary to the conventional assumption that all attention relies upon the frontal lobe of the brain, the researchers found that this was true of only exteroceptive attention; interoceptive attention used evolutionarily older parts of the brain more associated with sensation and integration of physical experience.
                                                    ...

These findings have important implications for emotional well-being. States of mind such as anxiety, depression, and anger often engage the prefrontal cortex. “I can’t shut my mind off” -- a statement most of us can relate to in times of stress. Have you ever tried to talk yourself out of such a state of high stress and failed? Trying to talk ourselves out of being less anxious or angry is often a futile exercise. The mind quite simply has a hard time telling itself what to do.

Dan Wagner of Harvard University describes this as an "ironic process" When we attempt to resist a certain thought or action (e.g. trying not to eat junk food when you're on a diet, or trying not to think of someone you just broke up with) the effort can easily backfire under stress. In the realm of the mind, what we resist persists. Sadly, some people end up turning to alcohol and drugs as a last resort to quiet their mind.
