Our Education System is Obsolete

Our Education System is Obsolete | Positive futures | Scoop.it
We need a curriculum of big questions, examinations where children can talk, share and use the Internet, and new, peer assessment systems. In the networked age, we need schools, not structured like factories, but like clouds.

What a great talk.  I will be showing it to my kids.

Mary Perfitt-Nelson's curator insight, February 28, 7:39 PM

amazing video that won the 2013 TED prize.  Very surprising:  the hole in the wall experiment shows that we don't really need to TEACH so many things!

" Groups of street children learned to use computers and the Internet by themselves, with little or no knowledge of English and never having seen a computer before. Then they started instinctually teaching one another. In the next five years, through many experiments, I learned just how powerful adults can be when they give small groups of children the tools and the agency to guide their own learning and then get out of the way."

It's about LETTING learning happen!  Self-organized learning : broadband,  collaboration, and encouragement.  We need a curriculum of BIG questions; not little details.  BIG questions.

Gust MEES's comment, March 1, 6:27 PM
Give the kids the direction and let them develop, that's coaching! And THAT is THE Change as I say it since long as I gave courses for +/- 9 years by using it, the coaching together with group collaboration and freedom to learn... It works ;)

The Biology of Kindness: How It Makes Us Happier and Healthier | TIME.com

The Biology of Kindness: How It Makes Us Happier and Healthier | TIME.com | Positive futures | Scoop.it

There’s a reason why being kind to others is good for you — and it can now be traced to a specific nerve.

When it comes to staying healthy, both physically and mentally, studies consistently show that strong relationships are at least as important as avoiding smoking and obesity. But how does social support translate into physical benefits such as lower blood pressure, healthier weights and other physiological measures of sound health? A new study published in Psychological Science suggests that the link may follow the twisting path of the vagus nerve, which connects social contact to the positive emotions that can flow from interactions.

David Foster Wallace’s Timeless Graduation Speech on the Meaning of Life, Adapted in a Short Film | Positive futures | Scoop.it

by Maria Popova

"On May 21, 2005, David Foster Wallace got up before the graduating class of Kenyon college and delivered one of history’s most memorable commencement addresses. It wasn’t until Wallace’s death in 2008 that the speech took on a life of its own under the title This Is Water, and was even adapted into a short book. Now, the fine folks of The Glossary have remixed an abridged version of Wallace’s original audio with a sequence of aptly chosen images to give one pause:"

Wallace: “The real value of a real education … has almost nothing to do with knowledge and everything to do with simple awareness.”

Inspiring article by Jamie Dunn on blog of +Richard Branson

Jamie Dunn says:
“To me, building up a network with key, knowledgeable and most importantly, trusted individuals is one of the best things you can spend your time doing. Not just collecting stacks of business cards that you will keep in your drawer and never use, I mean creating relationships that add value to your life and your business. Most opportunities come from developing the right connections and relationships.”

I have sometimes the impression that people do only concentrate on presenting themselves in the networks instead of reaching out to people. They have learned to function.

You can be the best marketing person in the world, but if nobody knows who you are then does it really count?

Especially Twitter is a great tool for networking, maintaining relationships and creating new ones.

Do you really notice people or do you only share your stuff?

Twitter is like a great avenue where people meet others and there are indeed people who say hello to you because saying hello shows that we are friendly, open and interested in other people. The only problem is that not all people are open and want to say hello back.

How can relationships develop when we nip them in the bud?

Life seems to be a matter of course.

Do we live our life with arrogance or with openness and a heart for other people?

Do we try to impress with authority or with empathy?

Does trust come from:
I trust that you believe in my authority!
Learn to respect me!

or from:
I offer you my empathy and my trust that you are able to develop trust in me!

??

I prefer the second option.

And you?

LET PEOPLE COME INTO YOUR HEART!

BE OPEN FOR OTHERS!

""When we start losing our tolerance for vulnerability, uncertainty, for risk — we move away from the things we need and crave the most like joy and love and belonging, trust, empathy, creativity." — Brené Brown"

Most of the greatest successes in medicine are borne out of mistakes.

SHAME is the fear of disconnection.  WOW .  We MUST be allowed to be seen.  Really seen.  Vulnerability is key.  The "wholehearted" walk into vulnerability.

Vulnerability is NOT weakness.  It is our most accurate measurement of courage.

I'm not sure we can BE creative if we aren't courageous and vulnerable.  Te be human is to be vulnerability.

Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity and change.

From Compassionate to 'Compassion It' | Positive futures | Scoop.it

Compassion It is a global social movement inspiring daily compassionate actions. How did it come to be? Founder Sara Schairer shares her story.     Did you know that.

Did you know that ‘compassion’ is a noun?  In the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, you’ll find the definition: sympathetic consciousness of others' distress together with a desire to alleviate it.  But, that sounds more like a verb to me.  And, thanks to a gift from the universe and many incredible people, compassion IS now a verb.

Via Edwin Rutsch
Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, May 4, 12:20 PM

"Compassion is the most important skill to teach our children.  If we teach a new generation to put themselves in others’ shoes, the world’s social problems would disappear.” We need to find ways to feel good about our self and others.
