The traditional hierarchy of leadership is dated — organizations with a flatter structure have better [career] development, higher engagement and better leadership."

The reason this generation is so eager to take on leadership roles so early in their careers is because they truly want to make a difference in all aspects of their lives, said PJ Neal, senior product manager at Harvard Business Publishing (HBP) and lead developer of HBP's New Leader Program.

It used to be that leaders were old people — well older anyway. Now, that's an old idea.

It used to be that leadership equated with years of accomplishment, honorary degrees, military commissions, and merit badges. It used to be that by climbing the corporate ladder you could finally reach a rung that had "leader" etched in it. Breathless, or just worn out from the ascent, you could say, "I made it!" You were finally in a senior position and could call the shots.

Thankfully, those days are gone. The economic cost of not recognizing young people as leaders has been significant. Keeping younger people subordinated has been a drain on innovation, invention, and productivity.

True leadership knows no age. Leaders are people of any age who just go do it. They grab your attention, take the initiative, are compelling, and set an example.

Milton Berle said, “If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door.” Constantly step outside your comfort zone. Take on challenging situations. Be willing to look at situations from a new perspective. Welcome opportunities to collaborate in new and creative ways. Look to the work of others for inspiration and opportunity to reevaluate the status quo.

I love the design of this infographic.  It's very eye catching and colourful (that' the right hand side of my brain talking) but I'm not sure how useful the advice section is (that's my left brain right there). 


My premise is that it is better to be able to think (and act) with both sides of your brain so advice should be tailored to how people with preferences on one side of the brain can become more effective with processes associated with the other.

 

It seems to me that the latest thinking with regard to learning styles is that they are not engrained but that they remain preferences.  Therefore we should look to find ways of helping people with different preferences to engage with other forms of learning in order to make them richer.

Meghan M. Biro, in her Forbes column, advocates reverse mentoring, a method I believe spurs serendipitous discovery of unexpected shared sweet spots of mutual interest, as well as social learning.

Biro cites my former colleague at the Center for the Edge, John Hagel. “Formal schooling and degrees give workers about five years’ worth of useable skills,” according to Hagel and others at Harvard Business Review.

Staying open to serendipitous introductions increases the chances you’ll cultivate a flexible mindset, recognizing more sides to a situation and discover more breakthroughs in your areas of strongest interest.

On Friday, Gallup and the Meridian International Center launched the Global States of Mind 2014 report, which provides a high-level overview of the countries that scored the best and the worst for life evaluations, safety, food access, institutions, jobs, and whether residents are planning to leave their communities. It’s our attempt to fill in the gap on how people all over the world are feeling.

Struggling Teens often are those kids who cannot/will-not give up their creativity.  Those are not broken kids needing serious treatment, but confused kids trying to find their way and making poor decisions.  There are schools working on this creativity gap, and should be a model for mainstream kids. -Lon

When my children were small we spent a great deal of time being creative and playing the "what if" game to test out theories. That is not seen with children in my practice much anymore.  They are stuck in overly compartmentalized learning and playing.  Few of them know what to do if told to go outside.

 

We need to bring curiosity and creativity back into the forefront of child development and learning.  I see the loss of this as being as devastating as when children were told "Do it because I said so and don't ask questions."

I have a lot of friends who scoff at the notion of a personal brand and they’re flat out just not paying attention. We all have a personal brand. We’ve all always had a personal brand. It’s your reputation, credibility, experience, capabilities presentation, elevator pitch, story, backstory, what you say, what they say – all that – rolled into one. In today’s fast-moving world, the other thing that your personal brand does is change. Often. This was a great message for a room full of CMOs and I’ll share below Dorie’s thoughts on the personal brand.
