Schools around the country are being cleaned, waxed, and made to look their best in preparation for another year. It’s about this time when principals begin planning for the new year.

Principals that allow all team members, from custodial and kitchen staff, to teachers and support staff, to make positive contributions to the school community, while holding those who deter a positive school culture accountable, will foster a high-quality working environment for staff and an excellent learning environment for students."

MTSS  is best practice around meeting the needs of all students in the classroom/building.  It is not a separate "program" and should be embedded in the continuous school improvement plan.  Many strategies (UDL, Differentiated Instruction) are best practice tools used in this framework.

I'm pondering this one!  I love this idea..........it all goes back to one thing, much like those who ask "WWJD".  

 

I prefer something more intrinsic (What SHOULD I do?  or What is the RIGHT thing to do?)

 

Simple idea, though.  

 

The first five days should be spent establishing routines and teaching and discussing the subtelties of life in the newly formed group.

When it works, it works.  Some things are kind of magical...........but then again, there are steps we all can take to make it "good".  Putting inspiring leaders in administrative positions is the first step.

TED Fellow Jorge Mañes Rubio has created a new micronation in response to the social struggles of a small neighborhood in Amsterdam.

Very cool article!  Building a "micronation" when you have a group that comes from a variety of different backgrounds involves creating a common goal!  This TED blog shows how one artist managed to do just that.   Projects like this open new possibilities that might expand the future impact of artists on social issues — going beyond the pre-established white cube context.

 

 "These organizations are  heavily structured, with little interaction between each other, and showed little wiggle room for change. Meanwhile, I noticed that the cultural diversity caused a lot of tension and confusion, particularly among young children. We decided that whatever solution we came up with should not only involve the neighbors, but should also somehow bring together the existing organizations in the area for a common purpose. It all sounded great. But how?"

The goal of an RtI-MTSS framework for literacy is to improve student achievement using a coordinated, data-driven system so that each student receives the research-based instruction and support necessary to read on grade level. Oakland Schools is providing intensive support for school teams with a network, data review days and foundational content around creating long-lasting, sustainable systems to support students.

Spirit Week needs to happen more than once per year.  It does all the things we want it to, and then some.  

 

Be creative.  Be inclusive.  Build this bad boy and make it happen, often!

The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) is a brief behavioural screening questionnaire about 3-16 year olds. It exists in several versions to meet the needs of researchers, clinicians and educationalists. Each version includes between one and three of the following components:

A) 25 items on psychological attributes.

All versions of the SDQ ask about 25 attributes, some positive and others negative.  These 25 items are divided between 5 scales: 
 
 

1) emotional symptoms (5 items)}1) to 4) added together to 
generate a total 
difficulties score 
(based on 20 items)2) conduct problems (5 items) 3) hyperactivity/inattention (5 items) 4) peer relationship problems (5 items)     5) prosocial behaviour (5 items)
