Mary Perfitt-Nelson's insight:
Oakland Schools in Oakland County, MI is offering support for general and special education teachers who would like to bring PBIS philosophy to their classrooms. The framework is one used by Randy Sprick's Safe and Civil School (http://www.safeandcivilschools.com/products/scs_overview.php).
This two day event will be tailored to the group after a needs assessment is given prior to the day. Each participant will be creating an individualized, comprehensive written plan for the organization and management of materials and activities in the classroom. Topics to explore include: organizing materials and space; teaching expectations around movement, noise, asking for help, and engagement; early stage interactions to build relationships; how to engage reluctant learners; and personal goals for those most difficult to engage.
Teachers who have attended in the past indicate that the experience taught them that they can improve in key areas to create a more consistent and predictable environment for students to learn. The textbook given becomes a valuable resource for the future: We have facilitated the learning of hundreds of educators, including entire buildings and departments. The last group of district special education teachers were thrilled with the outcomes.
