I will be posting interesting articles exploring the relationship between politics and religion. I find the relationships between the two fascinating as they can work together and oppose each other in so many ways.

Does a candidates' faith matter? Answers seem to hinge on race | Politics & Religion | Scoop.it
By Dan Merica, CNN

Washington (CNN) – A survey released Thursday shows striking racial and religious divides over the role of religion in presidential politics.
Zack Vye's insight:

This piece provides statistics on surveys conducted on young U.S millennials (18-25 age group) and shows the preferences of different ethnic groups: young white people felt that it was less important for ther president to be religiously affiliated, while more black and hispanic people felt that president needed to espouse a strong sense of faith. By using polls like these, candidates can adpat their strategies in order to impact as large a group as possible.

Obama Admin. tags jihadists: warriors for 'political and socio-economic' justice

Obama Admin. tags jihadists: warriors for 'political and socio-economic' justice | Politics & Religion | Scoop.it

"Boko Haram has killed an estimated 10,000 Nigerians, primarily Christians, police officers and military personnel..."
In spite of a stated desire "to establish

Zack Vye's insight:

In this piece it is reported that the Obama Administration has refused to label the Boko Haram militant group as a religious terrorist organisation, despite the fact that a large proportion of those murdered by the group have been Christians.

Boko Haram's aims are to establish an Islamic state free from the 'teachings' of the West. This is derived from a loose translation of their Islamic name: "Western education is sinful". I believe these 'teachings' refer to Western ideas of religion, economics, and politics.

In this sense then how should they be labelled? They are fighting for a single cause that has a multiplicity of aims and it may be unhelpful, in dealing with the issue, to label and sort them into one category.

I don't think that word means what you think it means.
Zack Vye's insight:

This is a funny clip of a U.S senatorpresiding over a case of whether or not to teach Evolution Theory and Creation Theory alongside each other at schools. The senator doesn't have a clear grasp of just how evolution works though.

This article focuses on the mass incarceration of African Americans, relating this back to the Jim Crow laws that were put into place from 1876-1965. The main groups opposing these "New Jim Crow laws" are a number Churches across the US. This first article is an example of religious organisations opposing policies of government: here this refers to the "War on Drugs" that has fuelled the mass incarcerations of African Americans, despite contradictory evidence.

Zack Vye's insight:

This video gives an insightful look into last years presidential candidates: The Evangelical Christian Obama and the Mormon Romney.
Political experts speak on why voters may lean towards a certain religiously affiliated candidate, and how poll popularity can be affected by the spreading of false news: "Barack Obama is really a Muslim!". The interplay between politics and religions is made sense of by noting how the publics feelings differ on candidates depending on their religious beiefs.

Yemen minister seeks child bride law

Yemen minister seeks child bride law | Politics & Religion | Scoop.it
Zack Vye's insight:

This story reports of an eigth year old girl who died of internal bleeding on her wedding night. She wasmarried to a 40 year old man, a custom which is still popular in many parts of the world today. It is a religious and cultural practice that has now begun to gain political attention with some calling for a minimum age for marriage to be set. This issue poses some interesting questions about the interactions between political correctness and religious and cultural beliefs that have been entrenched in generations of people.

This is a short article from India where recently violent riots religious riots broke out between Muslims and Hindus, resuling in a number of deaths. Various political parties have been accused of inciting the violence ahead of elections. I chose this story as it is an example of how political parties often attempt to use religion to further their own means, regardless of the destruction and loss of life that come hand in hand with these events.
