"The charter school mistake" | Los Angeles | Opinion | 10/10/13 | Politics From My Point Of View | Scoop.it

Los Angeles has more charter schools than any other school district in the nation, and it's a very bad idea. 'Reforming' schools by giving tax money to corporations is a distraction from the system's real problems — poverty and racial segregation.

Another Great Failing GOP Idea!!

"Obamacare is a Triumph for African-Americans" | The Hutchinson Report News | 09/29/13 | Politics From My Point Of View | Scoop.it

The verdict was in even before the first enrollee inked their signature October 1 on a health care plan under the Affordable Care Act. The law is an unmitigated triumph for the millions of uninsured in America. The triumph is even greater for African-Americans. The checklist of pluses is well known. More than 7 million African-Americans will now have access to a health plan, there will be subsidies for low income persons to offset the costs, a half million children will be covered under their parent’s plans, millions of dollars will be allocated for research and testing, the establishment of more than 1000 new health care facilities in many rural and urban communities, the National Health Service Corps workforce will be tripled and more than 4 million elderly and disabled African-Americans covered under Medicare will have no cost access to health care preventive services. The triumph is even greater because of the grim figures on the health care crisis that has been a national disgrace for so long for African-Americans.

Franklin Delano Williams's insight:

Listen Up My People! Remember, your parents and grandparents working in low-wage farm and domestic work were not included in the original Social Security Law.  This time all people, workers and non-workers are eligible in the Affordable Care Act and the  GOP ultra-conservatives are not happy.....

WASHINGTON -- House Republicans included a so-called "conscience clause" in the government funding bill in a plan they approved early Sunday. The House voted 231-192 on a bill that would delay much of the 2010 health care overhaul for a year.

"Slate Pitch: Obama Is the Shrewdest Political Tactician Since LBJ" | Mother Jones News | 09/24/13 | Politics From My Point Of View | Scoop.it
The conventional view in Washington these days is that President Barack Obama is not having such a great second term and might already be suffering a bit of lame duckery. After all, he failed to overcome NRA and GOP opposition to modest gun safety legislation after the horrific Newtown massacre, and his immigration reform push has crashed into that brick wall known as the Republican-controlled House of Representatives. But here's a Slate pitch: Obama is the most wily tactician in the nation's capital since Lyndon Johnson.

"Family Research Council: ‘Nothing more Christian’ than food stamp cuts" | The Raw Story | 09/24/13 | Politics From My Point Of View | Scoop.it

There’s “nothing more Christian” than the massive food stamp cuts passed last week by House Republicans, said a conservative activist.

Ken Blackwell, a senior fellow for the Family Research Council, told the Christian Post on Saturday that welfare programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program bred dependency.

The former Ohio secretary of state and failed 2006 gubernatorial candidate said he favored empowering the poor and working poor to become self-sufficient, although the story does not quote any specific plans suggested by Blackwell for doing this.

Christopher Barnes's curator insight, September 24, 2013 10:19 PM

The article cites a poll taken of American citizen's views on whether or not to raise the debt ceiling as a response to "Obamacare".  The poll showed that the majority of Americans opposed defaulting on the debt, but opposition to "Obamacare" itself was more popular.  The only group favoring defaulting is the teaparty.  The implication in the article is that teaparty members are dogmatic and blindly in opposition to socialized healthcare.  The treatment of the party is less than fair, with members being reffered to as "teabaggers".  Personally, I do not agree with a government shutdown, but teaparty members' beliefs should not be discounted as irrational just because they are extreme.  The persistence of the proponenets of a shutdown is startling, and just about sums up American politics in the last five years: one side will be out of a job before they compromise.

As the result of Republicans’ three-year campaign to undermine Obamacare by threatening government funding, the first shutdown in 17 years began at midnight October 1. It directly affects not only 800,000 government workers who have been furloughed, but also the U.S. economy, visitors to historic sites, Americans’ public safety and health care, and more.

Here are nine examples of the impacts already visible from the first day of the shutdown:
