BILL MOYERS: And now to the people who refuse to let democracy work. The people who hate government so much they’ve shut it down. Unable to abide by the results of democracy when they don’t win, they turned on it.

Republicans have now lost three successive elections to control the Senate and they’ve lost the last two presidential elections. Nonetheless, they fought tooth and nail to kill President Obama’s health care initiative. They lost that fight, but with the corporate wing of Democrats, they managed to bend it toward private interests.........

"High-risk pools: the newest proposal to fix the GOP’s health plan, explained" | MSN News via VOX | 05/03/2017 | Politics From My Point Of View | Scoop.it
The Republican solution to sick people who need health insurance in a post-Obamacare world is increasingly coming to center on three words: high-risk pools.
Franklin Delano Williams's insight:

INSIGHT: High-risk pools are expensive. Really, really expensive.

Before the Affordable Care Act, there were 35 states with high-risk pools. In 2011, these pools covered 226,234 people, or 0.0007 percent of the American population.

But the small group generated a massive number of health care claims. They spent a collective $2.5 billion on health care in 2011. States lost a collective $1 billion on these bills. Even though high-risk pool members paid premiums — sometimes double those charged on the individual market — it just wasn’t enough to cover the really high medical bills.

“The costs continued to go up, and it started to become expensive for a lot of people,” says Lynn Blewett, director of the University of Minnesota’s State Health Access Data Assistance Center, who has studied Minnesota’s pools. “The premiums kept a lot of people from signing up.”

States usually funded their high-risk pools with a tax on health insurance companies. That could be hard to increase, so they would do things to tamp down on the actual cost of running the high-risk pool itself. Thirty-three states had lifetime limits on coverage, most between $1 and $2 million. Most had preexisting condition clauses, which excluded treatment for known medical conditions during the first six or 12 months of membership.

"The Far Left Is Still Out Of Touch With Black Voters" | TheEstablishnent.co | 04/27/2017 | Politics From My Point Of View | Scoop.it
This week, the internet was set ablaze with hot takes relating to former President Obama’s decision to get paid to speak at a health-care conference. The conference was organized by Cantor Fitzgerald…
Franklin Delano Williams's insight:

INSIGHT: "In order to properly talk about the disconnect between people of color and the far left, we have to talk a bit about why Sanders lost in the primary. His message primarily targeted the white working class and focused on “economic” issues versus “racial” ones. He rejected identity politics and had virtually no political capital with minorities even after decades in Congress. As a result, he lost Black voters 75–25 and Latino voters 65–35. His backers will point to Sanders winning the youngest overall cohort of people of color, but his turnout rate with this demographic was so poor that it was ultimately irrelevant. The far left uses Clinton’s turnout rates in the general as evidence of her being a “poor” candidate. Why are Bernie’s horrible turnout rates among young people of color not used as evidence of him being a poor candidate that couldn’t connect with Black and Brown voters?"

OFA works to ensure the voices of ordinary Americans are heard in Washington, while training the next generation of grassroots organizers who will keep fighting for change.
Franklin Delano Williams's insight:

INSIGHT: For months, we sent a strong message to Obamacare opponents in Washington that repealing the law would be cruel and irresponsible.

Last week, despite the tidal wave of outrage from Americans who support and depend on this law, congressional leaders passed a disastrous repeal bill. The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact has passed a total of 35 state legislative chambers in 23 states
Franklin Delano Williams's insight:

INSIGHT: So far 165 electoral votes from 11 states have been secured. Of the remaining 105 required, 82 are seriously in play, having passed at least one legislative chamber in 10 states. Optimistically, we’re 23 new electoral votes away from ridding ourselves of the Electoral College. It’s something that could be managed through strategically pressuring a handful of state representatives.

For any cynic who thinks the people can’t course-correct our own disenfranchisement, this is about as feasible as it gets.

"The Comey Letter Probably Cost Clinton The Election" | Five Thirty Eight | 05/03/2017

"The Comey Letter Probably Cost Clinton The Election" | Five Thirty Eight | 05/03/2017 | Politics From My Point Of View | Scoop.it
So why won’t the media admit as much?
Franklin Delano Williams's insight:

INSIGHT:  "That Comey’s decision to issue the letter had been so unorthodox and that the contents of the letter were so ambiguous helped fuel the story. The Times’s print lead on Oct. 30 was about Clinton’s pushback against Comey, and a story it published two days later explained that Comey had broken with precedent in releasing the letter. It covered all sides of the controversy. But the controversy was an unwelcome one for Clinton, since it involved voters seeing words like “Clinton,” “email,” “FBI” and “investigation” together in headlines. Within a day of the Comey letter, Google searches for “Clinton FBI” had increased 50-fold and searches for “Clinton email” almost tenfold.

Clinton’s standing in the polls fell sharply. She’d led Trump by 5.9 percentage points in FiveThirtyEight’s popular vote projection at 12:01 a.m. on Oct. 28. A week later — after polls had time to fully reflect the letter — her lead had declined to 2.9 percentage points. That is to say, there was a shift of about 3 percentage points against Clinton. And it was an especially pernicious shift for Clinton because (at least according to the FiveThirtyEight model) Clinton was underperforming in swing states as compared to the country overall. In the average swing state,3  As weighted by the state’s likelihood of being the tipping-point state. Clinton’s lead declined from 4.5 percentage points at the start of Oct. 28 to just 1.7 percentage points on Nov. 4. If the polls were off even slightly, Trump could be headed to the White House."

"Democrats say they now know exactly why Clinton lost" | MSN News - Politics | 04/30-2017 | Politics From My Point Of View | Scoop.it

A group of top Democratic Party strategists have used new data about last year's presidential election to reach a startling conclusion about why Hillary Clinton lost. Now they just need to persuade the rest of the party they're right.

Franklin Delano Williams's insight:

INSIGHT: One slice of the "Obama Voters" that voted for the Trump that is not talked about here are the African-American and other Minority Republicans and Independents who a=wanted to vote for the  "First American-American President".   Many of these voters, my own family and friends included, have little or no commitment to the Democratic Party or the "Obama/Clinton Vision for America".   Not all problems stemming from the Obama Presidency can be fixed by us Democrats other than building upon what the 65,000,000 voters that the Clinton/Kaine Ticket Turned Out! .,

"Trump Tax Plan Would Shift Trillions From U.S. Coffers to the Richest" | New York Times - Politics | 04/28/2017 | Politics From My Point Of View | Scoop.it
The vast majority of benefits would go to the highest earners and largest holders of wealth, analysts said, setting up a battle over the government’s strained resources.
Franklin Delano Williams's insight:

INSIGHT: "President Trump’s proposal to slash individual and business taxes and erase a surtax that funds the Affordable Care Act would amount to a multitrillion-dollar shift from federal coffers to America’s richest families and their heirs, setting up a politically fraught battle over how best to use the government’s already strained resources.

The outline that Mr. Trump offered on Wednesday — less a tax overhaul plan than a list of costly cuts with no price tags attached, rushed out by a president staring down his 100-day mark in office — calls for tax reductions for individuals of every income level as well as businesses large and small.

But the vast majority of benefits would accrue to the highest earners and largest holders of wealth, according to economists and analysts, accounting for a lopsided portion of the proposal’s costs."

New Orleans planned to begin removing the first of four prominent Confederate monuments early Monday, the latest Southern institution to sever itself from symbols viewed by many as a representation
Franklin Delano Williams's insight:

INSIGHT:  New Orleans planned to begin removing the first of four prominent Confederate monuments early Monday, the latest Southern institution to sever itself from symbols viewed by many as a representation racism and white supremacy.

Workers were to begin removing the first memorial, one that commemorates whites who tried to topple a biracial post-Civil War government in New Orleans, overnight in an attempt to avoid disruption from supporters who want the monuments to stay, some of whom city officials said have made death threats.

Three other statues to Confederate Generals Robert E. Lee and P.G.T. Beauregard and Confederate States of America President Jefferson Davis will be removed in later days now that legal challenges have been overcome.
