"Stop Hating on the IRS"

"Stop Hating on the IRS" | Politics From My Point Of View | Scoop.it

People are attacking the IRS from the left and right. Actually it does as good a job chasing tax cheats as we let it.

The Tea Party groups who suffered the IRS indignities were the little guys. While they filled out endless questionnaires, the big ones made it through the process unscathed. Karl Rove’s Crossroads GPS, the Koch brothers’ Americans for Prosperity, and Barack Obama’s Priorities USA are the ones whose tax exemptions should be challenged.

Franklin Delano Williams's insight:

The system is broken!

Philae Attempts Comet Nucleus Landing

Explanation: Today humanity will make its first attempt to land a probe on the nucleus of a comet. As the day progresses, the Philae (fee-LAY) lander will separate from the Rosetta spacecraft and head down to the surface of Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko. Since the texture of the comet's surface is unknown and its surface gravity is surely low, Philae will then attempt to harpoon itself down, something that has never been done before. Featured here is an artist's illustration of dishwasher-sized Philae as it might look on Comet Churyumov–Gerasimenko's surface, along with explanation balloons detailing onboard scientific instruments. Many people on a blue planet across the Solar System will be eagerly awaiting news and updates. Whether Philae actually lands, whether it lands on a smooth patch, whether the harpoons take hold, and how far the robotic lander sinks into the surface should all become known as events unfold today.

Franklin Delano Williams's insight:

....Somewhere out in 'Deep Space' our probe is attempting to land on a comet!!

"What This City Did With An Abandoned Wal-Mart" | ViralNova.com | 10/30/14 | Politics From My Point Of View | Scoop.it

You'll find a Walmart store in most American towns and cities. These stores are almost always giant, taking up an average 2.5 football fields worth of space. So what happens when one of them closes? It's an awful lot of space to just let sit there.

Officials in McAllen, Texas, were faced with this problem when their local Walmart shut down. Instead of letting the giant store sit vacant, they did something amazing. They transformed it into the largest single-floor public library in America.  Now this is the library of my dreams. It's true what they say: everything is bigger in Texas.

Franklin Delano Williams's insight:

...I came across this post before the Midterm Elections and held it back to make sure it wasn't loss in 'election fatigue'.  I'm tagging my new mayor in this post.  We have a centrally located abandon mall here in Augusta-Richmond County that could become a great multi-use public space.  Plenty of parking and easy access from two major roads.

"Make 2016 About Minimum Wage Ballot Initiatives" | Working Class Progress | 11/05/14 | Politics From My Point Of View | Scoop.it

Democrats and progressives can take one key lesson away from the 2014 Republicans’ rout: Americans want a raise, and will vote for minimum wage ballot initiatives even in red-leaning states. Minimum wage increases passed in Arkansas, Nebraska, South Dakota and Alaska - - even as voters in each of these states also elected a Republican senator.

A whopping 67 percent of Alaskans voted to increase the minimum wage to $9.75 by 2016 - - yes, that’s Sarah Palin’s state. Voters in the Deep South’s Arkansas voted 65 percent for a minimum wage increase, and in Nebraska 59 percent of voters chose to up the minimum.

Franklin Delano Williams's insight:

.....We need either Statewide and/or Local Minimum Wage Ballot Initiatives in every State that has a minimum wage below $9.75 an hour!!

More than 12,800 voters cast ballots in Georgia’s first widespread use of Sunday voting, according to final tallies from the 11 participating counties. The result beat expectations and, coupled with Saturday’s mandatory voting day for all 159 counties statewide, significantly boosted Georgia’s overall early-voting totals to more than 440,000. That number, for both in-person and absentee ballots, includes Saturday’s voting tally of 41,968.

Did Voting Restrictions Make a Difference Yesterday? | Brennan Center for Justice | 11/05/14 | Politics From My Point Of View | Scoop.it

The Republican electoral sweep in yesterday’s elections has put an end to speculation over whether new laws making it harder to vote in 21 states would help determine control of the Senate this year. But while we can breathe a sigh of relief that the electoral outcomes won’t be mired in litigation, a quick look at the numbers shows that in several key races, the margin of victory came very close to the likely margin of disenfranchisement.

‘Republican Cuts Kill,’ which was produced by the Agenda Project Action Fund, mixes disturbing footage of the Ebola outbreak—including images of body bags, hazmat suits, and corpses—with clips of Mitch McConnell, Pat Roberts, Rand Paul, and Republicans in some of the most competitive races around the country demanding more spending cuts. The demand for cuts is juxtaposed against testimony from top CDC and NIH officials detailing how budget cuts substantially hampered their ability to address the crisis.
