Hamas Interior Ministry To Social Media Activists: Always Call The Dead 'Innocent Civilians'; Don't Post Photos Of Rockets Being Fired From Civilian Population Centers | Politics and Business | Scoop.it
In light of the recent round of fighting in Gaza, the Hamas interior ministry has issued guidelines to Gaza Strip social media users for reporting events and discussing them with outsiders.

Dave Cottrell's insight:

Here are very telling instructions that Hamas has given to its social media activists, regarding how to talk to fellow Muslim Arabs, vs how to talk to westerners:

"The narrative of life vs. the narrative of blood: [When speaking] to an Arab friend, start with the number of martyrs. [But when speaking] to a Western friend, start with the number of wounded and dead. Be sure to humanize the Palestinian suffering. Try to paint a picture of the suffering of the civilians in Gaza and the West Bank during the occupation's operations and its bombings of cities and villages."

Dave Cottrell's insight:

Here is some really good advice from a Knesset member, for people who don't check their sources, but instead simply believe what they want to believe, even from the most unreliable writers:

"Go ahead, ask a Hebrew speaking friend to translate it for you, they’ll confirm this is what my Facebook post was about. But you’ll find not a trace of that in Resnick’s account. Perhaps it’s his own ignorance of the Hebrew language. After all, he got the text from Electronic Intifada, a website dedicated to daily and hourly vilification of my country."

Middle East and Terrorism: Gaza of Below and Gaza of Above

Two Gazas. The Gaza of above is held tragically hostage to Gaza of below. But there is a third Gaza: the Gaza that could have been. In 2005 Israel uprooted more than 8000 Israelis and more than twenty settlements from Gaza, in the hope that Gazans would build a prosperous society, with tourists flocking to its beautiful beaches and agriculture flourishing in the greenhouses Israel left behind. Since then the greenhouses have been smashed and Gazan society brutalised by the Hamas regime.

When this terrorist regime is finally disarmed and dismantled, this third Gaza may yet become a reality.

Dave Cottrell's insight:

Gaza of 2005 could have been the garden paradise of 2014.  Instead, Hamas has destroyed it.

Middle East and Terrorism: The Palestinian Rocket and Propaganda Offensive

Middle East and Terrorism: The Palestinian Rocket and Propaganda Offensive | Politics and Business | Scoop.it

Since Israel withdrew from the Gaza Strip in 2005, Hamas and its co-jihadists have fired more than 8,000 rockets into Israel.  They have been conducting an unrelenting Nazi-style rocket blitz for years, except during cease-fires that are hastily negotiated after Israel strikes back. Hamas’s rocket blitz has intensified massively in recent days to new heights. Over the past several days, Hamas and Islamic Jihad have fired more than 550 rockets and mortars from Gaza into Israel, with the intent to kill and terrorize innocent civilians, including children.

Dave Cottrell's insight:

What the world fails to remember when they accuse Israel of being a repressive regime is that Israel withdrew completely from Gaza in 2005 and has done everything possible to keep the border open, including keeping it open while under Hamas rocket attacks to provide emergency medical help to Palestinians.

Could We Live Without Pipelines and Tar Sands? | BC Sustainable Energy Association | Politics and Business | Scoop.it
So, Canada’s federal government has finally approved construction of the proposed Enbridge pipeline that is intended to carry bitumen from Alberta’s tar sands to Kitimat, and thence by ocean to China. If we do not go ahead, the Prime Minister warns us, Canada’s economy will be in grave danger.
Dave Cottrell's insight:

I am not a fan of windmills, having driven past miles and miles of these unsightly giants, spoiling what would otherwise be many beautiful natural settings.  Furthermore, they are pretty hard on migrating birds and bats, from some of the reports.  With that said, I am really happy to see people thinking outside of the "oil and gas" box and looking at new ideas.  Opposing pipelines simply is not enough;  we have to have viable alternatives and solutions, because like it or not, everything we do requires energy of some kind, and at it most basic, we require an inexpensive way (most of the world is still poor) to produce food and get it to the table.

Israeli Military Invades Gaza, With Sights Set on Hamas Operations

Israeli Military Invades Gaza, With Sights Set on Hamas Operations | Politics and Business | Scoop.it
Israel said it would target tunnels that could infiltrate its territory after cease-fire talks failed to de-escalate the air war that had raged for 10 days.
Dave Cottrell's insight:

The tunnels are a game changer, no doubt.  In fact, as the tunnel attack proved on Thursday, Hamas invaded Israel on the ground, first.  The Iron Dome missile defense system has protected Israel from most of the rockets, mortars and missiles from Gaza, but this is a whole different story.

"Amos Yadlin, director of Israel’s Institution for National Security Studies and former chief of military intelligence, similarly said in a radio interview earlier Thursday that the tunnel attack “clarified to those who were still wondering if it was right to conduct a ground move against certain points.”"

Israel has had enough.  After Israel agreed to an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire and discontinued military operations against Gaza at 9am local time, Hamas has fired over 50 missiles into Israel.  How long can any country do nothing while their citizens sit under a constant barrage from the neighbors?  People can't begin to go about anything even remotely resembling normal life in Israel.  The air raid sirens have sounded 58 times since the one-sided ceasefire began.

Two things have long been entrenched in US society and indeed, are guaranteed by the US constitution:  Freedom of speech and freedom of religion.  In California, a school and law firm that gets paid whether they win or lose are attacking a young graduate on both points.

It matters not whether people agree with him.  His right to freely speak his mind on US soil, and his right to freely practice his religion on US soil, have been and continue to be violated.

Dave Cottrell's insight:

"There has been a lot of criticism of Israel in the mainstream media in recent days, but much of it is quite hypocritical.  Just imagine what would happen in the U.S. if another country fired just one missile at New York City or at one of our nuclear reactors.  If that happened, "glass parking lot" would suddenly be on the lips of tens of millions of Americans all over the country, and the U.S. military would rapidly be preparing for an absolutely devastating response."

Hamas has claimed responsibility for firing the rockets, stating that it had been deliberately attempting to hit the nuclear reactor in Dimona.
