Stocks Drop Sharply On Cyprus Bailout Tax

Stocks Drop Sharply On Cyprus Bailout Tax | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
LONDON -- Stocks around the world and the euro fell sharply Monday as investors fretted over a plan to tax depositors in Cypriot banks as a way to partly fund a bailout of the Mediterranean island nation.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

Although Cyprus accounts for only around 0.2 percent of the economic output of the 17 European Union countries that use the common euro, the tax on depositors was a significant policy shift that has stoked fears of bank runs in other troubled European economies. Cyprus residents already emptied virtually all ATMs on the island in a weekend bank run.

No Intelligent Aliens -- Yet : DNews | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
We have yet to detect a signal from an alien civilization -- so scientists are thinking up novel (and often extreme) ways we may make first contact.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

Forget "habitable exoplanets" for now -- how about directing a search at stars that are similar in temperature, size and chemical composition to our sun? The sun, after all, provides our planet with energy, and all the chemicals that form our planet came from the protoplanetary disk surrounding our newborn star 4.5 billion years ago... why not just look for sun-like stars?

Buried Flood Channels Found On Mars

Buried Flood Channels Found On Mars | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
Previously hidden subsurface flood channels have been discovered on Mars by researchers at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

“As a consequence of extensive volcanism throughout the past several hundred million years, young lava covers most of the surface of Elysium Planitia, burying evidence of its recent geologic history, including the source and most of the length of the 1,000 kilometer-long Marte Vallis channel system. Marte Vallis has a similar morphology to more ancient channel systems on Mars that likely formed by the catastrophic release of ground water; however, little is known about Marte Vallis due to its burial by lava.

Huge Solar Flare And CME Eruption, Mars Rover Curiosity Powered Down For Safety

Huge Solar Flare And CME Eruption, Mars Rover Curiosity Powered Down For Safety | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
A large solar flare erupted from the Sun on March 5th, accompanied by a large CME. As a result NASA decided to temporarily power down their Mars rover Curiosity, in order to help protect it from the blast.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

The mission controllers for Curiosity made the decision to shut down shortly after the mid-strength solar flare occurred. The rover is designed to withstand solar flares and CMEs of strength comparable to that of thai recent eruption, the decision to power down was made simply as an extra precaution because of the other computer problems being dealt with at the moment. This is the second shut down that the Mars rover Curiosity has experienced in recent days, as it was switched into ‘safe mode’ last Saturday March 2nd, when the computer glitch came to light.

Happy Birthday, Antonio Vivaldi! | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
Today is the birthday of Italian baroque composer, Antonio Vivaldi. The master of concertos, famous for creating the violin masterpiece, "The Four Seasons," would turn 335 years old if he were miraculously alive today.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

Vivaldi was born in Venice in 1678, and became maestro di violino (master of the violin) at the age of 25 while working at the Pio Ospedale della Pietà orphanage. The institute provided musical education for abandoned or orphaned children, but was also known for its acclaimed orchestra and choir. There Vivaldi began composing, writing concerto and cantatas for his talented students, paving the way for his eventual ascension to the royal orchestras and opera houses of Europe.

Will African Elephants Be Extinct In Ten Years?

Will African Elephants Be Extinct In Ten Years? | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
Some experts say that if left unchecked, poaching could lead to the extinction of the African elephant by 2020.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

If you watched the National Geographic special Battle for the Elephants on PBS, you’re probably concerned about the fate of one of Africa’s greatest natural treasures—and with good reason. Last year was devastating for elephants across Africa, with poaching-related deaths estimated to be at least 25,000. A rate that some experts say, if left unchecked, could lead to the extinction of the African elephant by 2020.

Snakes in a Frame: Mark Laita’s Stunning Photographs of Slithering Beasts

Snakes in a Frame: Mark Laita’s Stunning Photographs of Slithering Beasts | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
In his new book, Serpentine, Mark Laita captures the colors, textures and sinuous forms of a variety of snake species
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

Mark Laita captured plenty of photographs of snakes striking, their mouths agape, in the making of his new book, Serpentine. But, it wasn’t these aggressive, fear-inducing—and in his words, “sensational”—images that he was interested in. Instead, the Los Angeles-based photographer focused on the graceful contortions of the reptiles.

“It is not a snake book,” says Laita. As he explained to me in a phone interview, he had no scientific criteria for selecting the species he did, though herpetologists and snake enthusiasts will surely perk up when they see the photographs. “Really, it is more about color, form and texture,” he says. “For me, a snake does that beautifully.”

Sun Eruption Supercharges Northern Lights Displays This Weekend | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
The massive solar eruption on March 15 sent charged particles toward the Earth at 3.2 million mph, NASA says.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

The Earth-directed solar stormoccurred Friday at 2:54 a.m. EDT (0654 GMT) in what astronomers call a coronal mass ejection — or CME — a sun eruption that can release billions of tons of solar material into space. The particles typically take between one and three days to reach Earth, where they can pose a hazard to satellites and electronic systems in orbit and on the planet's surface, NASA officials said in a statement.

The solar particles from the Friday eruption were expected to reach Earth today (March 17).

There are about 100,000 forest elephants remaining in the forests of central Africa, compared with about 400,000 of the slightly larger savannah elephants. Comet Pan-STARRS made its closest approach to the Earth today, coming as close as 100 million miles from us.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

Comet PANSTARRS has actually brightened considerably over the past week, and is now set to fulfill the original predictions made about it. So it should put on a good show for those with a clear view of the horizon. It’s already easy to find in the sky from those in many regions of the Southern Hemisphere. And will become visible to those in the Northern Hemisphere on March 7th. It will be visible towards the west-southwest horizon for about an hour after sunset.
