Linking Past and Present in Nuremberg, Germany

Linking Past and Present in Nuremberg, Germany | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
This Bavarian city, known to many for its World War II significance, has much more to offer than dark history.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

“This will be easy to see,” said Annelise, our guide, flipping off the lights in the chilly sandstone beer cellar that had been converted to an air-raid shelter during World War II. A small plaque on the wall glowed with electric-lime phosphorescence. It was, she told us, an emergency exit sign for the 50,000 civilians who had fled — two to a square meter — to these cellars-cum-bunkers during Allied firebombings.

Clouds Over the Southern Indian Ocean

Marine stratocumulus clouds stretched across the southern Indian Ocean in early March 2013. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this natural-color image on March 11, as a striking band of clouds ran roughly northwest to southeast over the open ocean.

Earth’s boundary layer extends upward from the land or ocean surface to roughly 2 kilometers (1 mile) in altitude, and it is the part of the atmosphere where interactions with the planet surface have the strongest effects. Patrick Minnis of NASA’s Langley Research Center explains that the clouds in this image likely formed underneath a strong inversion, in which air above the boundary layer was sinking. “The clouds in the northwest are below one kilometer in altitude,” Minnis noted, “while the remaining clouds, which are thicker and more developed, are between one and two kilometers.”

File this under significant but not exactly shocking: Hillary Clinton declared her support for gay marriage in a video released by the Human Rights Campaign.

In the Monday morning video, Clinton says that she supports gay marriage "personally and as a matter of policy and law," explaining that "LGBT Americans ... are full and equal citizens and deserve the rights of citizenship. That includes marriage."

Clinton, as the Associated Press helpfully points out, follows other potential 2016 Democratic presidential candidates Andrew Cuomo and Joe Biden in making her positive stance on gay marriage public.

Sun Eruption Supercharges Northern Lights Displays This Weekend | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
The massive solar eruption on March 15 sent charged particles toward the Earth at 3.2 million mph, NASA says.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

The Earth-directed solar stormoccurred Friday at 2:54 a.m. EDT (0654 GMT) in what astronomers call a coronal mass ejection — or CME — a sun eruption that can release billions of tons of solar material into space. The particles typically take between one and three days to reach Earth, where they can pose a hazard to satellites and electronic systems in orbit and on the planet's surface, NASA officials said in a statement.

The solar particles from the Friday eruption were expected to reach Earth today (March 17).

A troubled island story | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
DREAD was mixed with anger. Cypriots feared that deposits in the two largest banks, Bank of Cyprus and Laiki Bank, might be taxed or converted into worthless...
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

Many anxious Cypriots queued patiently to draw cash out of ATMs. Others protested angrily in the streets, waved Russian flags and talked about leaving the euro. They had hoped that joining the European Union (in 2004) and the euro (in 2008) meant solidarity from their fellows. The troubles of the two banks were caused, some believe, by a decision to buy Greek government bonds that were then restructured. They feel they are being punished by the EU for no fault of their own.

NASA - Light Echoes from V838 Mon

NASA - Light Echoes from V838 Mon | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
What caused this outburst of V838 Mon? For reasons unknown, star V838 Mon's outer surface suddenly greatly expanded with the result that it became the brightest star in the entire Milky Way Galaxy in January 2002.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

Then, just as suddenly, it faded. A stellar flash like this had never been seen before -- supernovas and novas expel matter out into space. Although the V838 Mon flash appears to expel material into space, what is seen in the above image from the Hubble Space Telescope is actually an outwardly moving light echo of the bright flash.

In a light echo, light from the flash is reflected by successively more distant rings in the complex array of ambient interstellar dust that already surrounded the star. V838 Mon lies about 20,000 light years away toward the constellation of the unicorn (Monoceros), while the light echo above spans about six light years in diameter.

Should the Fed Bail Out Cyprus?

Should the Fed Bail Out Cyprus? | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
For background on the Cyprus banking crisis that emerged over the weekend, see here and here and especially these two posts from Pawel Morski.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

The euro might move up against the dollar (back to where it was a month ago, say) rather than moving down in the bailout scenario. But I'd judge that as good for the U.S. (exports, and all that), as well as a nice vote of confidence in the European Project.

Of course it "sounds crazy," so it won't happen, nor will the "even crazier" alternative of Secretary Jack Lew minting a $8 billion platinum coin and mailing it to Nicosia. But it seems like a fine idea nonetheless.

Stocks Drop Sharply On Cyprus Bailout Tax | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
LONDON -- Stocks around the world and the euro fell sharply Monday as investors fretted over a plan to tax depositors in Cypriot banks as a way to partly fund a bailout of the Mediterranean island nation.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

Although Cyprus accounts for only around 0.2 percent of the economic output of the 17 European Union countries that use the common euro, the tax on depositors was a significant policy shift that has stoked fears of bank runs in other troubled European economies. Cyprus residents already emptied virtually all ATMs on the island in a weekend bank run.

Previously hidden subsurface flood channels have been discovered on Mars by researchers at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.

“As a consequence of extensive volcanism throughout the past several hundred million years, young lava covers most of the surface of Elysium Planitia, burying evidence of its recent geologic history, including the source and most of the length of the 1,000 kilometer-long Marte Vallis channel system. Marte Vallis has a similar morphology to more ancient channel systems on Mars that likely formed by the catastrophic release of ground water; however, little is known about Marte Vallis due to its burial by lava.
