Infographie : Comment être retweeté sur Twitter ? | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it

The coffee house as social network

The coffee house as social network | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
People working in Starbucks is nothing new; 500 years ago that's where business was done.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

om Standage writes a wonderful article in the New York Times about how the coffee house was the social network of the 1600s, and how it was as much of a distraction as Facebook and Twitter are today. Oxford professors complained that they were ruining education:

Among the first to sound the alarm, in 1677, was Anthony Wood, an Oxford academic. “Why doth solid and serious learning decline, and few or none follow it now in the University?” he asked. “Answer: Because of Coffea Houses, where they spend all their time.”

(To which architect Lance Hosey responded on Facebook, " I doth spend all my time in bars. More productive, I sayeth.")

But in fact, coffee houses spurred innovation, discussion, interaction, business and education. Standage concludes that today's social networks are no different:

NASA to send DNA of science fiction writer Arthur C Clarke into space | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it

Washington: NASA is planning to send DNA of famed British science fiction writer Sir Arthur C Clarke into space - five years after his death.

The author of the novel '2001: A Space Odyssey' died in 2008 in Sri Lanka, and now NASA scientists have announced plans to send his DNA into orbit around the Sun in 2014 aboard the Sunjammer, a solar-powered spacecraft which gets its name from the writings of Clarke.

Called the Sunjammer Cosmic Archive (SCA), the flying time capsule is a first in the history of space travel, carrying digital files of human DNA including Clarke's aboard the sun-powered space ship

The Astonishing Likeness of Turkey and Russia

The Astonishing Likeness of Turkey and Russia | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
Erdogan is being challenged by an urban, secular minority—just as Putin was eighteen months ago. The EU urgently needs to craft a strategy toward its two biggest neighbors.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

There are a number of similarities between Turkey and Russia. Both used to have powerful empires, with much of their territory situated outside Europe. Both started their modernization late, in the second half of the nineteenth century, went through catastrophes of war and revolution at the beginning of the twentieth, and, as a consequence, had to reinvent themselves as nations.

Both are now going through a second wave of modernization of their economies, societies, and polities. Both are treated as outsiders by Europeans: the Turks, because they are many and Muslim; the Russians, because they are largely Christian Orthodox, and used to be Communist. And, crucially, both deserve the attention of the EU, which needs to rethink its relations with its two largest neighbors.

Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

“Jaws: Free trade, blockbusters and the cultural exception”

On 14 June, EU trade ministers met behind closed doors in Luxembourg to seek a common mandate for the European Commission in the negotiations with the United States on a transatlantic free trade agreement.

Talks had stalled by mid-afternoon, as France refused to budge on the“cultural exception”, according to which television, film, and online media would be exluded from any deal with Washington. France’s obstinacy put it at odds with the views of the European Commission, Germany in particular.

New Light Shed On The Physiology Of Diving Mammals | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

Marine mammals possess truly remarkable underwater endurance — some of them, such as the sperm whale, can remain submerged during their dives for as long as an hour and a half. That’s an hour and a half of physical exertion on a single breath. What physiological adaptions allow such impressive abilities? The answers to that question are now becoming more clear thanks to new research from the University of Liverpool.

Solar Eruption Sheds New Light On Growth Processes Of Young Stars | PlanetSave

Solar Eruption Sheds New Light On Growth Processes Of Young Stars | PlanetSave | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

The movies take by the SDO spacecraft of the June 7th eruption “show dark filaments of gas blasting outward from the Sun’s lower right. Although the solar plasma appears dark against the Sun’s bright surface, it actually glows at a temperature of about 18,000 degrees Fahrenheit. When the blobs of plasma hit the Sun’s surface again, they heat up by a factor of 100 to a temperature of almost 2 million degrees F. As a result, those spots brighten in the ultraviolet by a factor of 2 — 5 over just a few minutes.”

The enormous release of energy was the result of the falling blobs traveling at very high speeds, up to 900,000 miles per hour. “Those speeds are similar to the speeds reached by material falling onto young stars as they grow via accretion. Therefore, observations of this solar eruption provide an ‘up close’ view of what happens on distant stars.”

“We often study young stars to learn about our Sun when it was an ‘infant.’ Now we’re doing the reverse and studying our Sun to better understand distant stars,” says Testa.

Austerity after 2015: why the worst is yet to come

Austerity after 2015: why the worst is yet to come | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
Without further welfare cuts or tax rises, the next government will have to cut departmental spending 50% faster.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

Of course, we shouldn’t forget that all of these numbers depend heavily on deeply uncertain estimates of the output gap, a figure that has been revised dramatically in the past and may well be revised again. But it’s difficult to see past the likelihood that the post-election period will bring with it a new suite of difficult choices, from departmental cuts that look increasingly hard to deliver to further cuts to working-age support or the introduction of unannounced tax rises. Ultimately, we might be looking at further slippage in the deficit-reduction timetable. Don’t rule out the chance of it being all four.

Greek crisis: Dead airwaves, sweeping the nation | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:
“Look at that, a channel broadcast nationwide”

Greece’s public television channel, ERT, has been silent since it was shut down six days ago, even if rebellious staff continue to broadcast programs online, namely debates concerning the government and the “troika” of the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

At the same time, exactly one year after June 2012’s legislative elections, the spectre of new elections are haunting Greece. A poll published in newspaper Kathimerini on June 16 puts the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn at 11.5 per cent support in intentions to vote, placing it ahead of the socialist party PASOK with 6.5 per cent but behind the New Democracy party of Prime Minister Antonis Samaras with 29 per cent.

Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

The G8 meeting on June 17 and 18 near Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, concluded without the leaders of major powers having reached an agreement on the fate of Syria or its president Bashar al Assad, mostly due to the intransigence of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who refused to discuss any plan involving the departure of the Syrian leader.

However, in their final press statement, the leaders said they had made progress towards an international peace conference to be held in Geneva, the date of which has not yet been set. They also agreed to pay €1.12bn of aid to Syrian refugees and condemned the violations of human rights committed by the government and rebel force.
