I’m especially fond of the mysterious limb that emerges from the darkness as the moon comes back into the light, and shows our satellite as the three-dimensional sphere it is. What an amazing universe we live in.

Democracy

Democracy | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

Democracy is a political form of government where governing power is derived from the people, either by direct referendum (direct democracy) or by means of elected representatives of the people (representative democracy). The term comes from the Greek: δημοκρατία – (dēmokratía) “rule of the people”, which was coined from δῆμος (dêmos) “people” and κράτος (krátos) “power”, in the middle of the fifth-fourth century BC to denote the political systems then existing in some Greek city-states, notably Athens following a popular uprising in 508 BC. Even though there is no specific, universally accepted definition of ‘democracy’, equality and freedom have been identified as important characteristics of democracy since ancient times. These principles are reflected in all citizens being equal before the law and having equal access to power. For example, in a representative democracy, every vote has equal weight, no restrictions can apply to anyone wanting to become a representative, and the freedom of its citizens is secured by legitimized rights and liberties which are generally protected by a constitution.

Food in Hellenic Republic ain’t that Greek | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
Food in Athens with some complicated names for dishes may sound Greek! But even a die-hard Indian-food buff, wanting dal-vegetable-roti-rice on the plate each
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

With such a feast of dishes in front of your eyes – fresh, colourful, welcoming and also familiar – one wonders if the food in the Hellenic Republic, known from ancient times as Hellas, should sound Greek at all!

Marseille Polishes Its Image

Marseille Polishes Its Image | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
A European Capital of Culture for 2013, this French city has added so many arts attractions and revitalized so many neighborhoods that travelers may find it hard to resist.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

Until the European Union named Marseille a European Capital of Culture for 2013, it may have been one of the most underappreciated cities on the Continent. Situated on a splendid Mediterranean harbor, surrounded by hills and blessed with an average 300 days of sunshine, a variety of museums, great restaurants and a vital, multicultural population, it has just about everything a visitor could ask for. Yet because of its rough-edged reputation, people usually preferred to spend their sojourns in the South of France in the quieter, smaller cities of Aix-en-Provence, Avignon, Arles and Nîmes.

Greek Prime Minister Says Positive Economic Data Points to Austerity Easing

Greek Prime Minister Says Positive Economic Data Points to Austerity Easing | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
Prime Minister Antonis Samaras said the Greek economy had the smallest contraction since 2010 and the improvement was largely due to a strong rebound in tourism.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

“Greece is turning the page,” Mr. Samaras told politicians and entrepreneurs at an annual international trade fair in the northern port of Thessaloniki, traditionally used by Greek prime ministers to outline their government’s economic policy for the coming year. “There will be no more austerity measures,” he said.

Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

Men sprawled on a tile floor, shirtless and convulsing. Children, too, seemingly unable to control their shaking and flailing. Panic and screams in the background.

These are some of the hard-to-stomach images that the Obama administration has shown a select group of senators in closed-door briefings to make the case that a limited military attack on Syria is justified.

5 Skills Every Workplace Leader Needs

5 Skills Every Workplace Leader Needs | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
What does it take to truly motivate an employee? While big pay checks can help, a worker's motivation is often based on opportunity and how happy they are with what they do.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

What does it take to truly motivate an employee? While big pay checks can help, a worker's motivation is often based on opportunity and how happy they are with what they do. Both are such important factors that it takes a visionary leader with great communication skills to meet both of these needs. A business is really only as good as its people, and unfortunately half of CEOs today believe their organizations are not prepared to deal with the ever increasing complexities of the business environment!

A Campaign in Germany, an Influence Far Beyond It

A Campaign in Germany, an Influence Far Beyond It | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
Seeking a third term as chancellor, Angela Merkel is saying little about the future of Europe, while the rest of the world scours the election race for clues to her intentions.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

At her rallies, the euro is praised as the foundation of Germany’s prosperity, while it is emphasized that a united Europe has had almost 70 years of peace — and, she says, “the older ones here know what that means.” When she glimpses anti-Merkel protesters, she tells her fans, “I know they won’t be locked up” for speaking out against austerity that Greeks, Portuguese or Spaniards see as imposed by Berlin.

“Freedom of opinion, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, all that is Europe,” Ms. Merkel said in Düsseldorf last weekend as she fired up 7,000 supporters for the final days of campaigning. “When you look around the world, you know what we have.”

Μικρασιατική καταστροφή-Ξυλούρης-Γαργανουράκης

Ένα βιντεάκι που το έκανα με πολύ κόπο εις ανάμνηση της μικρασιατικής καταστροφής!!
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

Happy Birthday, Star Trek! (Capt. Kirk, We Love Ya)

Happy Birthday, Star Trek! (Capt. Kirk, We Love Ya) | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
Forty-seven years ago today, a science fiction icon was born that would live long, and definitely prosper. I'm talking, of course, about the original TV series of "Star Trek," which launched the U.S.S.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

Today, the "Star Trek" sci-fi franchisehas spawned four spinoff series, an animated TV show and — as of this summer — 12 feature films, with the promise of more to come. So why do we love "Star Trek" so much? Why do we watch the crew of the Starship Enterprise, its brash and bold Captain James T. Kirk, half-Vulcan half-human First Officer Spock and their crew save the universe time after time?

36 Hours in Monaco

36 Hours in Monaco | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
You can give your wallet a wild ride in this diminutive constitutional monarchy, but there is also a world of affordable fun to be found.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

Monaco, a constitutional monarchy on the Riviera measuring less than a square mile, evokes high-stakes gambling, multimillion-dollar yachts, Russian oligarchs, racecar drivers, James Bond films, spotless sidewalks and no public debt. Hotel suites with a view of the sea during the Grand Prix can cost thousands, even tens of thousands, of euros. A starter of pea soup with gnocchi goes for 76 euros (about $100) at the Louis XV, Alain Ducasse’s Michelin three-star restaurant at the Hôtel de Paris. Monaco is a place where high-priced female “escorts” with long legs and exotic accents decorate the nightclubs and hotel lobbies. Visitors can drop their dogs off at free kennels, and car owners feel safe enough to leave their keys in the ignition. Prince Albert II is pushing to make Monaco a family-friendly, environmentally correct vacation spot. Look hard enough and you will discover a world of art, natural beauty and good food and lodging at affordable prices.

Harvard Business School Case Study: Gender Equity | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
An aggressive program intended to foster female success brought improvements, but also resentment and uncertainty.

When the members of the Harvard Business School class of 2013 gathered in May to celebrate the end of their studies, there was little visible evidence of the experiment they had undergone for the last two years. As they stood amid the brick buildings named after businessmen from Morgan to Bloomberg, black-and-crimson caps and gowns united the 905 graduates into one genderless mass.

Tokyo to host 2020 Olympic Games | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
Tokyo has been chosen over Istanbul and Madrid by the International Olympic Committee to host the 2020 Summer Games.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

In voting Saturday in Buenos Aires, the committee picked Tokyo over the two other contenders, Madrid and Istanbul.

The announcement came at 5:20 a.m. Tokyo time, but a large crowd watching on an outdoor video screen burst into cheers.

Tokyo previously hosted the Summer Games in 1964.

Japan's bid for 2020 billed the city as the safe choice -- despite radiation leaking from the Fukushima nuclear plant. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe personally made a presentation to the committee and promised an effective cleanup.
