Heavenly Nipples celebrates sexual diversity at the Glastonbury Festival

Heavenly Nipples celebrates sexual diversity at the Glastonbury Festival | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
Zoe Cormier: At this year's festival, Guerilla Science used latex nipples, merkins and the Great Wall of Vagina to confront the pervasive discomfort humans have with our sexual diversity
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

Six months ago Guerilla Science decided to tackle a singular puzzle: the pervasive discomfort humans have with the sexual diversity that defines our species. Our solution? Heavenly Nipples: an upmarket, high-end fashion emporium designed to celebrate humanity’s spectacular sexual spectrum.

Our key collaborator was the Brighton-based artist Jamie McCartney, creator of the Great Wall of Vagina, who held court for the entire week, photo-scanning the anatomical diversity of the denizens of Glastonbury, explaining his work, and bringing “freedom from body dysmorphia” to Britain’s largest festival.

Saturn Moons Could Be Young - Sky & Telescope

Saturn Moons Could Be Young - Sky & Telescope | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it

Saturn is the belle of our planetary ball. It waltzes through space in an elegant hoopskirt that glistens with ice crystals, surrounded by an entourage of 62 moons. Its lone gallant is Titan, whose thick hydrocarbon shroud makes it the only satellite in the solar system with a sizable atmosphere.

Alongside hazy Titan is an assortment of icy, mid-size moons, their sizes ranging from Mimas’s 400 km (250 miles) to Rhea’s 1,525 km (948 miles). Together, they have a mere twentieth as much mass as Titan does. Interspersed with these are a vast collection of moonlets, with sizes of a few tens to a couple hundred kilometers. Some of these are likely born from pileups of ring material.

In terms of numbers, Saturn’s retinue matches that of the king of the planets, Jupiter, whose current satellite tally also happens to be 62. But Jupiter boasts a more glamorous court, with its four Galilean moons (some of the largest moons in the solar system), two of which are comparable in size to Mercury. Titan’s elongated orbit and loner status set it apart from this stately satellite quartet. And Jupiter doesn’t have any mid-size moons.

Planetary scientists have long wondered why Jupiter has come out so much the winner when it comes to big moons. In 2013, for example, Erik Asphaug (Arizona State University) and Andreas Reufer (then at University of Bern, Switzerland) suggested that Saturn started with a Galilean system of its own, but the moons crashed into and obliterated one another. The rubble then coalesced into Titan and the mid-size moons.

A new paper explores this collision idea further. Matija Ćuk (SETI Institute) and his colleagues turned back time by studying the icy moons’ motions and figuring out when and how they could have interacted, given their current orbits. Some moons move in what are called orbital resonances, which means the time it takes Moon A to complete an orbit around Saturn is a simple fraction (say, one half) of the time it takes Moon B to do so. Resonant moons strongly affect each other’s orbits, easily tilting them out of the original plane in which they lay.

Saturn also has an off-putting effect on its satellites, pushing them farther away with time. This tidal push is strong because the planet isn’t solid. It affects each of the various moons in different ways, changing each of their orbits with time and making and breaking resonances.

What the team found was that, given the moons’ current (and backtracked) orbits, the moons can’t have migrated much from where they first formed. But that doesn’t make sense if they’ve been orbiting the planet from the solar system’s early days: Saturn’s tides are just too tenacious — the moon Enceladus and its tidal-triggered geysers confirm that.

Instead, the team argues, the mid-size moons can only be about 100 million years old — or, as the SETI Institute’s press release puts it, “younger than the dinosaurs.” (Dinosaurs first appeared in the Triassic period, 230 million years ago.) The moons formed from a ring of debris, born from the collisions of a previous population of moons, the team suggests in the April 1st Astrophysical Journal.

That’s consistent with his Galilean squabble theory, Asphaug says. Unlike Asphaug and Reufer, Ćuk’s team doesn’t argue in favor of Titan being a merger-born moon, but that suggestion “definitely ranks as hypothetical,” Asphaug readily admits.

Ćuk’s team offers a test: craters. If the mid-size moons are indeed young, they won’t have had time to build up a perfectly homogenous peppering of pockmarks from space. Instead, craters on moons within Titan’s orbit (all the mid-size moons but Iapetus) would concentrate around those satellites’ equators, because the moons would have been exposed to a lot of debris in the plane of their birth ring but not nearly as much from other angles. Many of the moons are heavily scarred, so it’ll take dedicated work to tease out whether the moons have these girdles.

This image from the Cassini spacecraft shows four of Saturn's moons and the outskirts of the planet's rings. Saturn's largest moon, Titan (3,200 miles, or 5,150 kilometers, across), is in the background. In front of it and above the rings at center is Dione (698 miles/1,123 kilometers across), one of the mid-size moons. The small moon Pandora (50 miles/81 kilometers) orbits beyond the rings on the right of the image. Finally, Pan (17 miles/28 kilometers) peeks out as a spot in the Encke Gap of the A ring on the left of the image. NASA / JPL-Caltech / Space Science Institute

Alexis Tsipras and His Syriza Party Clash as Greece Faces Another Deadline | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
Parliament must approve a package of financial and judicial changes before midnight to keep negotiations on track for the bailout of about $94 billion.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

As another deadline for approving a package of creditor-mandated measures approached on Wednesday, Prime MinisterAlexis Tsipras and rebellious members of his leftist Syriza party have begun taking shots at one another in public.

Parliament must approve a package of financial and judicial changes before midnight to keep negotiations on track for the bailout of 86 billion euros, or about $94 billion.

It has been clear since the first vote on the measures last week that a significant faction of Mr. Tsipras is frustrated with his leadership on the debt crisis, with about a quarter of his party voting against the first package of measures in Parliament last Wednesday.

The disagreement had largely played out behind closed doors and without rancor as Mr. Tsipras tried to persuade his dissenting party members, most of whom belong to the hard-line faction known as the Left Platform, to support him.

He also said that the business world was not "an alternative” to motherhood

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says that women who abstain from bearing children are “lacking” and “incomplete” the local Hurriyet Daily News reports. He made the remarks to Turkey’s Women and Democracy Association in Istanbul on Sunday.

While claiming to support women who pursue careers, he added, “I certainly do not accept the business world becoming an alternative for maternity.”

He also equated the rejection of motherhood with the denial of femininity and the loss of freedom.

The Turkish leader’s comments dovetail with his remarks last week condemning birth control for Muslim families, and his speech in March on International Women’s Day, when he proclaimed that “above all else” women are mothers.

Wine Tech Upstart Drops a Smart Bottle on a $300 Billion Industry

Wine Tech Upstart Drops a Smart Bottle on a $300 Billion Industry | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
For wine, the hangover can start as soon as the bottle is opened. Oxygen is toxic to the lovely, inebriating juice, which as every moment passes becomes something other than intended (letting it ''breathe'' notwithstanding). On any given night, having to choose between four glasses of wine and none can be a sad disconnect of supply and demand—a truly dismal science.
Marco DiGiulio, a vintner at California’s Vintage Wine Estates, can taste degradation in a bottle open just one day. That’s why he has such high hopes for Kuvée, a sort of Keurig-style dispenser that goes on sale Monday and comes with a catalog of 48 wines, including some of DiGiulio's. The core of the system is a decanter that sells for $1991 and looks like an oversize wine bottle. Ranging in price from $15 to $50, the canisters slide into the bottom and click in place. Equipped with a bladder and special valve, the wine can be poured without any oxygen seeping in, and drinkers can swap out a Pinot noir for a Syrah by ejecting one canister and clicking in another. After an initial pour, Kuvée wines will stay fresh for about 30 days.
“I’ll be honest, this was intriguing to me from a purely personal standpoint,” DiGiulio said. “My wife doesn’t drink a whole lot, and I don’t want to drink a whole lot, so it’s surprisingly rare how often we open a bottle of wine.”

Earthrise 2015

Earthrise 2015 | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) recently captured a unique view of Earth from the spacecraft’s vantage point in orbit around the moon. In this composite image we see Earth appear to rise over the lunar horizon from the viewpoint of the spacecraft, with the center of the Earth just off the coast of Liberia (at 4.04 degrees North, 12.44 degrees West). The large tan area in the upper right is the Sahara Desert, and just beyond is Saudi Arabia. The Atlantic and Pacific coasts of South America are visible to the left. On the moon, we get a glimpse of the crater Compton, which is located just beyond the eastern limb of the moon, on the lunar farside.
This image was composed from a series of images taken Oct. 12, when LRO was about 83 miles (134 kilometers) above the moon’s farside crater Compton. First the spacecraft must be rolled to the side (in this case 67 degrees), then the spacecraft slews with the direction of travel to maximize the width of the lunar horizon in LROC’s Narrow Angle Camera image. All this takes place while LRO is traveling faster than 3,580 miles per hour (over 1,600 meters per second) relative to the lunar surface below the spacecraft!
LRO was launched on June 18, 2009, and has collected a treasure trove of data with its seven powerful instruments, making an invaluable contribution to our knowledge about the moon. LRO experiences 12 earthrises every day; however the spacecraft is almost always busy imaging the lunar surface so only rarely does an opportunity arise such that its camera instrument can capture a view of Earth. Turns out certain whiskies can be colored for visual adjustment. Among the most commonly, and controversially, colored: Scotch. Surprising, right? Considering the romance and rigor that goes into Scotch production—that it all ends with a dash of food coloring? But it’s true. According to the Scotch Whisky Act of 2009, which basically sets and/or updates standards for Scotch production, Scotch was and remains a spirit “to which no substance has been added except (i) water; (ii) plain caramel colouring; or (iii) water and plain caramel colouring.” Scots are pretty serious about their whisky regulations, and for now at least, it looks like caramel is fair game.

The unrest comes after weeks of peaceful political rallies during the crisis Kathimarini reported that four of those arrested came from Germany, two were French, one Australian, one Ukraine, one Dutch and three Polish. There were given charges relating to damage of a metro station.
