Cause Sought for Space-Supply Rocket Explosion

Cause Sought for Space-Supply Rocket Explosion | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
The owners of a commercial supply ship that exploded moments after liftoff promised to find the cause of the failed delivery mission to the International Space Station and warned residents to not touch any debris they might stumble across from the craft, which was carrying hazardous materials.
Crews planned to hit the ground at daybreak Wednesday to search for pieces of Orbital Sciences Corp.'s Antares rocket and Cygnus cargo module, which blew up Tuesday night just moments after lifting off from NASA's launch complex at Wallops Island, Virginia, said Bill Wrobel, director of the facility.

Pluto is a Planet in a Landslide Vote

Pluto is a Planet in a Landslide Vote | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it

A populist uprising restores a space favorite to the planetary ranks. Will the astronomers listen?
When Pluto was hurled from the pantheon of planets back in 2006, it could simply have slinked away, accepting its new title of “dwarf planet” without a fuss. But thanks to the undying support of its millions of fans—not just schoolchildren, but many astronomers as well—the little planet that could is still a contender.

Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

The latest evidence: a debate at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, in which three astronomers squared off to present both sides of the question: “Is Pluto a Planet?” And when the dust settled, the audience, made up mostly of ordinary citizens, declared once again that the answer is “duh, obviously.”

Three may seem like one side too many, but David Aguilar, the Center’s director of public affairs, who set up the debate, wanted to look at the question not just from a scientific perspective, but also through the lens of history. The first speaker, therefore, was the eminent Harvard astronomer and historian of science Owen Gingerich. “Planet,” he pointed out, “is a culturally defined word that has changed its meaning over the ages.”

In fact, the word itself comes from an ancient Greek word meaning “wanderer.” Unlike the stars, which seem fixed in place, the planets are objects that wander from one constellation to another in the sky—and since the Sun and the Moon do that too, they were originally considered planets as well.

Why Should We Remember the Asia Minor Catastrophe? | USA.GreekReporter.com | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
“Even today, Greeks call it ‘The Catastrophe,’ referring to the eradication of the Greek presence in Asia Minor at the hands of the Turks,” said Christos Papoutsy in his groundbreaking masterpiece ‘Ships of Mercy,’ chapter 2, p. 15. “This wholesale ‘cleansing,’ which also removed Armenians, took place in the fall of 1922 as Turkish forces swept across the land, driving mass numbers of Greek Christians and the remaining Armenians before them. The horde wound up with their backs to the sea at Smyrna.”

Fight Against Climate Change a Casualty of European Economic Crisis

Fight Against Climate Change a Casualty of European Economic Crisis | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
Extracting billions of tons of carbon from the Earth's crust and dumping them in the atmosphere is a very dangerous experiment, and we can't afford to mess like that with our only life-support system.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

EU leaders didn’t discuss climate strategy at their four summits this year, while France, Germany, Spain and Britain are focused on paring the region’s 10.5 percent unemployment rate and 10.8 trillion euros ($13.9 trillion) in debt. The matter didn’t emerge during U.S. presidential debates.

“What scares me is that climate policy is sliding off the international policy agenda,” International Energy Agency Chief Economist Fatih Birol said in an interview (source)

This inaction is a stark contrast with what climate scientists are saying: "Sea ice in the Arctic shrank to its lowest on record this summer as drought devastated corn crops in the U.S. Midwest and superstorm Sandy pummeled the East coast after becoming the largest ever tropical system in the Atlantic. The World Meteorological Organization says greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere touched a high in 2011, and the UN says that will make the weather more volatile."

I'm not saying that dealing with Europe's economic woes isn't important, just that we shouldn't look so much at the short-term that we forget issues that will affect billions of people and all species on Earth for generations to come. Let's get serious about dealing with climate change.

Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

Παρά την εξέλιξη όμως αυτή, κανένας δε μπορεί και δε πρέπει να ξεχνάει τους Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες της Αθήνας του 2004 γιατί ήταν μια σημαντική στιγμή στη σύγχρονη ιστορία του Έθνους μας. Ας αναλογιστούμε, έστω και για ένα λεπτό, ότι γι’ αυτή τη στιγμή δουλέψαμε ΟΛΟΙ ΜΑΖΙ !! Μήπως αυτό πρέπει να είναι και το μήνυμα για σήμερα;

The Royal Shakespeare Company To Release Music From Its Archive

The Royal Shakespeare Company To Release Music From Its Archive | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
For more than a century, the Royal Shakespeare Company has commissioned music for plays. Its archive tracks the way music changes over time and across many productions.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

"We look back a hundred — exactly a hundred years — and there we had Ralph Vaughan Williams, Music For Richard II from 1913," O'Neill says. "It was a beautiful start for us."

The albums too juxtapose the contemporary with older works. This year, composer Michael Bruce adapted Shakespeare's song "Who Is Sylvia?" into an indie-rock ballad for a production of Two Gentlemen Of Verona. Listeners can compare this version with one from 1938 by Anthony Bernard.

"This is why I knew that we had to delve into the archive," O'Neill says. "Because, in 1938, that was modern. And classics only become classics after a length of time. ... That's the beauty of it. And when people are listening to Michael Bruce's version in, say, a hundred years time, I wonder what they will think of that."

Olive oil could help to reverse heart failure, scientists claim

Olive oil could help to reverse heart failure, scientists claim | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
Olive oil could help reverse a patient’s heart failure "immediately", scientists have claimed.

Oleate - the fat found in the golden liquid - could help a diseased heart pump blood more effectively and use body fat as fuel, researchers at the University of Illinois have found.

The most common reason a person may suffer from heart failure is when the muscle becomes damaged, including after a heart attack, through drug or alcohol abuse, and high blood pressure.

Shortness of breath, both during activity or rest; swelling of the feet, ankles, stomach and lower back; and fatigue are all symptoms of heart failure.

Currently, there is no way to reverse heart disease, and a combination of medication and lifestyle changes help patients manage their symptoms and keep their condition stable.

A new study suggests that the pygmy right whale is the last living relative of an ancient group of whales long believed to be extinct.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

The pygmy right whale, a mysterious and elusive creature that rarely comes to shore, is the last living relative of an ancient group of whales long believed to be extinct, a new study suggests. The findings, published today (Dec. 18) in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B, may help to explain why the enigmatic marine mammals look so different from any other living whale. "The living pygmy right whale is, if you like, a remnant, almost like a living fossil," said Felix Marx, a paleontologist at the University of Otago in New Zealand. "It's the last survivor of quite an ancient lineage that until now no one thought was around."

LOOK: The Sun Has Gone Eerily Quiet... Or Has It? | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
Our sun erupted with activity, sported several sunspots and unleashed massive solar flares just last month in what scientists dubbed a "solar mini max." But now, the sun appears to have gone strangely quiet.

In fact, the side that faces ...
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

That's a bit unusual, given that scientists believe the sun is in solar maximum, a period of peak activity during the sun's roughly 11-year solar cycle. The sun is currently in solar cycle No. 24, since scientists first started tracking sunspot variation in 1755.

"It is weird, but it's not super weird," solar physicist Tony Phillips wrote on his website, Spaceweather.com, according to the Los Angeles Times. "To have a spotless day during solar maximum is odd, but then again, this solar maximum we are in has been very wimpy."

Phillips first reported low solar activity on July 15, 2014. In days following, he noticed a continuing trend of few sunspots and low X-ray output, which he dubbed the "All Quiet Event."

This kind of behavior might be expected during the sun's solar minimum, its period of lowest activity. For instance, in 2008, during its last solar minimum, the sun went 266 days with no observable sunspots. But a sunspot-free day is uncommon during solar maximum.
