“Bambi”

The biggest and the strongest are the fittest to rule. This is the way things have always been. —Four stars.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

“Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory”

An excellent movie. The obviously unfit individuals are winnowed out through a series of entrepreneurial tests and, in the end, an enterprising young boy receives a factory. I believe more movies should be made about enterprising young boys who are given factories. —Three and a half stars. Donald Trump Appoints Greek-American George Gigicos Deputy Assistant to the President

Donald Trump Appoints Greek-American George Gigicos Deputy Assistant to the President  | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
Gigicos, a prominent member of the Greek-American community, was one of the first people to sign on with Trump’s presidential campaign, originally serving as the only member of the campaign’s advance team. He organized campaign events and rallies across the country, eventually managing around 100 staff members to help coordinate the rallies.

Gigicos studied at Birmingham-Southern College and began working in event planning and advance planning for political campaigns while still in school. According to Bloomberg, as a college student Gigicos worked in advance planning for the Treasury Department in the administration of George H.W. Bush. After graduating in 1990, Gigicos worked in advance and as an event planner for the Orange County Convention Center in Florida.

In 1999, Gigicos started the Telion Corporation, a communications firm specializing in event design, organization, and advance operations. As head of Telion, Gigicos worked in advance planning for President George W. Bush’s administration, his 2004 presidential campaign, and the presidential campaigns of John McCain in 2008 and Mitt Romney in 2012.

Reportedly, Gigicos, whose ancestors are from Kalamata, has in every Trump appearance tried to convince the Greek community that the new president shows an interest in Greece and the intention to promote the settlement of the Greek debt and the Cyprus issue.

Syrian Chef Serves Up Traditional Food at Ritsona Migrant Camp's 'Cafe Rits'

Syrian Chef Serves Up Traditional Food at Ritsona Migrant Camp's 'Cafe Rits'  | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
Bawabet Al Dimashq – Damascus Gate is the largest restaurant in the world as noted by the Guinness Book of Records as it can seat over 6,000 people.

Talal, a father of three, now resides in the Ritsona migrant camp located near Athens on the mainland. He realized right away that the food at the camps was “undercooked…with no regard to improving the quality.” He may have wanted to do something about it, but with no funding, there was not a lot that could be done to change the situation at the camp.

This is where former investment banker, Carolynn Rockafellow comes into the picture. She moved to Greece last year from the US and has made it her personal interest to try to improve the well-being of the 700 refugees at Ritsona’s camp, where nearly half of the residents are children.

She decided to donate her own money as well as raise funds to created ‘Cafe Rits’ in the camp. “I feel this story is as much about helping the Greeks as it is about helping the refugees,” she said to AFP adding, “This is a very tough situation for Greece and I think they’re doing a great job.”

Here at Cafe Rits, thanks to the talent of Talal and others who help out, Syrian refugees at the Ritsona camp are able to get a taste of their homeland and eat nutritious meals such as kibbeh, fattoush salad, maqluba rice, muhammara dip – all made with mostly locally sourced ingredients.

Everything you ever wanted to know about the Feast of the 7 Fishes

Everything you ever wanted to know about the Feast of the 7 Fishes | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
ew agree on the reasoning behind the number seven.

The emphasis on fish comes from the centuries-old rule against eating meat on Friday to honor the sacrifice of Jesus, according to Robert Germano's 2005 book "The Eve of the Seven Fishes: Christmas Cooking in the Peasant Tradition." But there's little agreement on the thinking behind the number. German posits a few theories: the seven Catholic sacraments; the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit; the Seven Hills of Rome; or the seven days it took Jesus and Mary to travel to Bethlehem.

Some families go above and beyond the seven.

Most stick an odd number because they're considered luckier in Italy, says Janice Mancuso, a writer and publisher of books by Italian-Americans, although some prepare 10 kinds of fish and shellfish for the stations of the cross. There are those who do 9, for the trinity tripled, or 13, for the 12 apostles plus Jesus Christ. And the truly ambitious take on 21 -- that's the seven sacraments multiplied by the trinity, according to the Oxford Companion to Italian Food.

There's no agreement which seven fishes must be used.

Many believe it wouldn't be La Vigilia without baccala (salt cod), calamari, eel, scungilli (snails), and smelt. Others add whiting and anchovies to the list. But the biggest sellers at Peter's Fish Market in Midland Park are shrimp and squid. Also popular among today's cooks: Clams, lobster, salmon, scallops and meaty swordfish, tuna or halibut steaks. Lou Palma, 84, has been preparing the Feast of the Seven Fishes for 40 years at his Montclair home, although now his sons are starting to take over over the tradition. He wouldn't dream of a feast without baccala, dried cod that must be soaked "and rinsed and rinsed and rinsed again," he laughs. He then boils the fish and serves it a salad with olives, vinegar peppers, lemon and olive oil.

In Italy, eel is a major player in the meal.

Next time you’re getting ready to have your friends over, impress them with unique mixed drinks and start a conversation about a destination you can’t wait to visit. I caught up with a few brand ambassadors in Chicago, representing some of the best spirits around to try some really unique cocktails, including a few extra glasses from a prestigious Glenfiddich 1978 Rare Collection Cask No. 28121 ($3,500 per 750 ml bottle). I will have to say, my favorites were Little Devil and Cucumber Basil Smash as they were both refreshing and weren’t overpowered by ingredients. I would encourage you to try to make Lavander Amore for your next Mexican fiesta as it would go well with tacos al pastor, rice, and beans, plus it’s easy and fast (make a pitcher of drinks for the entire night!). I personally like whiskey at the end of  a meal or while watching a movie, so many great flavors that I would prefer to enjoy by itself.

Witches, black metal demons & the devil: Scary illustrations that will become your new nightmares

Witches, black metal demons & the devil: Scary illustrations that will become your new nightmares | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
Argentina-based artist Santiago Caruso may only be in his early 30s but his nightmarishly surreal paintings appear to be the work of a someone much more sage than his years.

Caruso’s artwork has been shown all over the world and his illustrations have graced the pages of books such as The Folio Society’s gorgeously illustrated version of Charlotte Brontë‘s 1847 novel Jane Eyre, and other publications featuring the works of Shakespeare and a recent republication of Don Quixote. Caruso’s work also appears on the covers of many albums such as by Italian black metal band Selvans and long-running Australian avant-garde death metal band StarGazer. In an interview from 2014 Caruso says that his creative process has always been intertwined with music since he started honing his skill as a young child. The talented Argentinian also credits the poetry of Charles Baudelaire, Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft as other influences for his work.

British pound dives on May's Brexit comment — eTN: Global Travel & Tourism News | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
On Monday, however, May attempted to downplay fears that Britain was on the road to a hard Brexit.

“I’m tempted to say that the people who are getting it wrong are those who print things saying I am talking about a hard Brexit [and that] it’s absolutely inevitable there’s a hard Brexit,” she said.

“I don’t accept the terms hard and soft Brexit… What we are doing is going to get an ambitious, good, best-possible deal for the United Kingdom in terms of trading with and operating within the single European market,” she stated.

But earlier on Sunday, May had said leaving the EU was not going to be possible by keeping parts of the membership and the government was trying to tighten the borders first in order to meet a key demand of the citizens who voted in favor of Brexit.

“We are leaving. We are coming out. We are not going to be a member of the EU any longer,” she insisted. “This is what people were voting for on 23 June.”

According to a Lloyds Private Banking analysis, the pound sterling lost a fifth of its value against nine major currencies last year.

According to research the agency did into 60 currencies, the biggest declines in sterling were against the Brazilian real with a 28.4 percent drop, the Russian ruble with a 28 percent fall, and the Icelandic krona with a 27.9 percent decrease.

Chaos, corruption & the demise of civilization

Chaos, corruption & the demise of civilization | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
One of the notable fans of artist and sculptor Kris Kuksi is visionary film director Guillermo del Toro. And once you’ve seen Kuksi’s work it will not be hard to understand why it attracted the distinguished eye of del Toro and the late Robin Williams, among others.

Kuksi moved away from Springfield, Missouri and his alcoholic father while still a young child and was raised by his mother in a rural community just outside of Wichita, Kansas along with his two older brothers. The town offered a rather stagnant and unstimulating environment for the aspiring artist who spent a lot of time playing with his Star Wars action figures and LEGO bricks by himself. Kuksi’s grandmother would provide her grandson with her own stationary to draw on which allowed him to express himself despite the desolation he was surrounded by. His love of drawing was also encouraged by his high school art teacher who advised the teenager to continue his studies with higher education. Kuksi would go on to obtain both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in painting from Fort Hays State University.

By the time he was 22 Kuksi made his first attempt at sculpture using found objects such as castaway toys, leftover bits from modeling kits, wood, jewellery and other materials that helped him bring the images in his imagination to life. According to the artist it can take months to finish one of his densely detailed sculptures and it’s not unusual for him to work fourteen to sixteen hour jags in a single day on a complex piece in his studio—a former church by the Kansas River. Kuksi’s work is deeply influenced by Italian Renaissance masters and he refers to one of the greatest sculptors of the 17th century and architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini as his “ultimate hero.”

I don’t like to use the phrase “mind-blowing” without good reason but Kuksi’s sculpture work is absolutely worthy of such praise. Kuksi’s artwork is featured in the 2010 book published by BeinART, Kris Kuksi: Divination and Delusion. Some images are delightfully NSFW.

How the Sugar Industry Spent Decades Manipulating Health Studies

How the Sugar Industry Spent Decades Manipulating Health Studies | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
Underhanded as it was, the $100 million that Coca-Cola spent on “health research” before it got outed last year is apparently just the tip of the sham-science iceberg when it comes to hiding sugar’s bad health effects: Newly discovered documents show that in the ’60s, Big Sugar secretly funded important research that effectively swayed nutrition guidelines and health policy in America for the next 50 years. An article explaining how this all went down was published Monday in JAMA Internal Medicine; it details how the industry’s primary lobby group — known as the Sugar Research Foundation back then — paid Harvard researchers to push back against the widely held scientific belief that too much sugar is bad for the heart.

For about $50,000 in today’s dollars, these scientists, including a professor who went on to become the USDA’s head of nutrition and another who was among the first to study the diet’s effects on heart disease, published a two-part review discrediting research that previously linked sugar consumption to coronary artery disease. Instead, the authors blamed fat almost entirely. Most damning, the lobby group’s research director dialogued with them directly, sending a note before the paper appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1967 that said, “Let me assure you this is quite what we had in mind and we look forward to its appearance in print.” In the end, Harvard’s researchers wrote that reducing cholesterol and saturated fat in the diet was “no doubt” the best way to prevent heart disease, and by the ’80s “few scientists believed that added sugars played a significant role” in heart disease, the team behind this exposé says.

That lobby group, now called the Sugar Association, said in a statement yesterday that it’s “challenging for us to comment on events that allegedly occurred 60 years ago, and on documents we have never seen,” and believes it’s a “disservice” that anyone would allow tricks like the one carried out by its precursor to “brand” or “taint” industry-funded research in the future. The chair of Harvard’s nutrition department also called it a “useful warning” about bias in medical research — a growing problem these days — but claimed the scientific community’s ideas about conflicts of interest “have changed significantly” in the last 50 years.

Antarctica is four times larger than the United States, has the nearest continent is South America (Land of Fire) to 3000 km, its maximum altitude is 5,000 meters (the largest in the world) is the oldest continent composed mostly high mountains and large ice coated inland lakes. Today has been explored only a fraction.

This continent was discovered less than 200 years ago, back in 1820 and has 14 million square kilometers, almost 75 times the area of Uruguay. Only 2% (280,000 square kilometers) of its extension becomes free of ice in summer and there are areas with ice thicknesses up to 4000 meters. Its ecosystem is formed mainly by Krill (shrimp-like crustacean) which is the basis of the food pyramid which depend whales, penguins and birds.

Did Betelgeuse Swallow Its Companion? - Sky & Telescope

Did Betelgeuse Swallow Its Companion? - Sky & Telescope | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
This much is clear: Someday Betelgeuse will explode as a supernova. It's roughly 650 light-years away — and when it goes, it'll be spectacular.

But astronomers can't estimate when that might happen, because virtually everything known about this star is uncertain. Its surface temperature, mass, luminosity, and even its distance aren't pinned down very well.

Amsterdam Around the Holidays – What Not To Miss

Amsterdam Around the Holidays – What Not To Miss | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
ince my first experience with the tour company Eating Europe was such a success in London, when I found myself in another city where they host tours I knew immediately that I had to join. I wasn’t disappointed either and that morning and early afternoon I spent wandering around the canals of Amsterdam made me finally learn to appreciate the city, food coming to the rescue once again. From classic Dutch apple pie and poffertjes to more recent additions to the Dutch food scene from far-flung colonies, the tour was a true immersion into what Amsterdam as a city values in its food. Of everything I tried that morning, without a doubt my favorite bite came not at a café or restaurant, but at a butcher’s. Butcher Louman in the Jordaan neighborhood has been the go-to source for great meats since 1890, but they’re especially well known for their sausages and cured meats. My favorites were the ossenworst (raw, smoked beef sausage) and the grillworst (grilled sausages), which are both amongst the best in the city. The tour is also a fun way to see other parts of the city you might miss on your own, while enjoying local insights from the guide.

Organic Farming Doesn’t Mean Fairer Labor

Organic Farming Doesn’t Mean Fairer Labor | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
The terms “organic” and “unionized” rarely appear together for a reason. Gaining organic certification and unionizing workers is expensive and time-consuming. To farmers already operating with tight profit margins, the prospect of doing both can be daunting. Bruce Goldstein, president of the Washington, D.C., nonprofit Farmworker Justice, estimates that of the roughly 2.5 million farmworkers in America, only around 25,000 are unionized. And only a small percent of those 25,000 work on organic farms.

“I have sympathy for farmers who feel they can’t afford to pay their workers better,” says farmer Jim Cochran, who founded Swanton in 1983 and is now a spry, white-haired 69-year-old. “I’m trying to prove that it’s economically feasible to offer good benefits and a living wage and still make money without any subsidies.”
