Space News: Excellent prospects for August's Perseid meteors

Space News: Excellent prospects for August's Perseid meteors | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
Latest local news from Lake County California. Serving Clearlake, Clearlake Oaks, Glenhaven, Kelseyville, Lakeport, Lower Lake, Lucerne, Middletown, Nice, Upper Lake.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

The Perseid meteor shower, an annual celestial event beloved by millions of skywatchers around the world, returns to the night sky this week. And because the Moon will be just past new, no moonlight will hinder the view.

Sky & Telescope magazine predicts that the Perseid shower will be at or near its peak late on Sunday night (late on Aug. 11 and early morning on Aug. 12) and on Monday night (August 12-13).

"The nearly moonless sky this year means the viewing will be excellent," noted Alan MacRobert, a senior editor at Sky & Telescope.

Although an occasional Perseid meteor might catch your attention shortly after evening twilight ends, the prime viewing hours are from about 11 p.m. or midnight (local time) until the first light of dawn.

This is when the shower's “radiant,” its perspective point of origin, is high up in your sky. The higher the radiant, the more meteors appear all over the sky.

To enjoy the Perseids, you need no equipment but your eyes. Find a dark spot with a wide-open view overhead. Bring a reclining lawn chair or a ground cloth so you can lie back and watch the sky in comfort. Bundle up in blankets or a sleeping bag, both for mosquito shielding and for warmth; clear nights can grow surprisingly chilly under the open stars (due to radiational cooling).

“Relax, be patient, and let your eyes adapt to the dark,” said Robert Naeye, Sky & Telescope's editor in chief. “With a little luck you'll see a ‘shooting star’ every minute or so on average.”

Perseids can appear anywhere and everywhere in the sky. So the best direction to watch is wherever your sky is darkest, usually straight up. Faint Perseids appear as tiny, quick streaks. Occasional brighter ones may sail across the heavens for several seconds and leave a brief train of glowing smoke.

When you see a meteor, track its path backward. If you eventually come to the constellation Perseus — which climbs the northeastern sky as the night progresses, as seen at right — then a Perseid is what you’ve just witnessed.

Occasionally you may spot an interloper. The weaker Delta Aquariid and Kappa Cygnid showers are also active during Perseid season, and there are always a few random, “sporadic” meteors. All of these track back to other parts of the sky.

Any light pollution will cut down the numbers visible. So will the radiant's lower altitude if you’re viewing early in the night.

But the brightest few meteors shine right through light pollution, and the few that happen when the radiant is low are especially long — skimming the upper atmosphere and flying far across the heavens.

In fact, a recent NASA analysis of all-sky images taken from 2008 to 2013 shows that the Perseids deliver more bright meteors (those that outshine any star) than any other annual meteor shower.

How and why

Meteors are caused by tiny, sand- to pea-size bits of dusty debris streaking into the top of Earth's atmosphere about 80 miles up.

Each Perseid particle zips in at 37 miles per second, creating a quick, white-hot streak of superheated air. The nuggets in Grape Nuts cereal are a close match to the estimated size, color and texture of typical meteor-shower particles.

These particular bits were shed long ago by Comet Swift-Tuttle and are distributed all along the comet's orbit around the Sun. Earth passes through this tenuous "river of rubble" every year in mid-August.

More about the Perseids and how to watch them appears in the August issue of Sky & Telescope magazine and at www.SkyandTelescope.com/Perseids .

Missile Strike on Malaysia Airlines Flight Killed About 100 AIDS Researchers and Advocates | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
About 100 passengers on the Malaysia Airlines plane shot down over eastern Ukraine on Thursday were headed to the biennial International AIDS Conference in Melbourne, Australia. Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

Among the many lost were two giants of the HIV research community. “Both Joep Lange and Jacqueline van Tongeren meant a lot to us, as colleagues and as friends,” an anguished Brandon O’Dell of the Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development told me. Lange was once the president of the International AIDS Society, which organizes the conference. Van Tongeren, his partner, was a nurse and advocate and head of communications for the AIGHD.

'Made by Hellas' Exhibition at Hellenic Motor Museum

'Made by Hellas' Exhibition at Hellenic Motor Museum | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
The car exhibition “Made by Hellas” organized by the Hellenic Motor Museum, opened on Thursday, June 5 and will last until the end of the month
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

On the question “how many cars do think have been manufactured in Greece ?” most Greek citizens would probably reply “None.” However, the case is rather different as proven by the thematic exhibition “Made in Hellas” organized by the Hellenic Motor Museum, opened on Thursday June 5 and will last until the end of the month.

The exhibition was the idea of the founder of the Museum, Theodore Charagionis. Fifty percent of the cars on display are part of the Museum’s own collection, while the other half is contributed by the Automobile and Touring Club of Greece (ELPA), the Antique Car Club of Greece (FILPA) and by other individual contributors. The aim of the exhibition is to present vehicles that have any relationship with Greece, whether they were made or designed in Greece or whether they are designed or manufactured by Greeks abroad.

The exhibition includes widely known models like the Nissan Sunny, which was manufactured in Greece from 1981 until 1995 and of course, the legendary Mini, which was wholly designed by Alexandros Issigonis. In the “Made by Hellas” exhibition many variations of the particular car are displayed.

Other cars that enrich the exhibition are the Fiat Barchetta, one of the many models designed by Andreas Zapatinas, and who would know that the creator of the modern Audi A3, Gary Telaak, comes from Thessaloniki? Or that a small electric car named Enfield E800 was designed during the 1970’s in Greece? Ηowever, most vehicles manufactured in Greece belong to the category of small professional cars. A visitor of the exhibition “Made by Hellas” has the opportunity to admire models like the Pony, Zebra and Renault Farma and lesser known models like the Sherpa and the Farmobil 700.

The well-known mechanical engineer, Dimitris Korres, will also participate in the exhibition with three prototype models that precede the famous Korres P4 model. Also single-seat vehicles created by Greek universities and polytechnic schools will be on display. On the stands placed between the exhibits, the visitors can read about the history of each vehicle, as well as, the history of the vehicles that could not be on display, like the Scavas II or the Chicago designed by Giorgos Michail.

The exhibition ‘Made by Hellas’ will be accommodated until June 30 on the top floor of the Hellenic Motor Museum in Athens. The general entry fee is 8€, whereas the reduced fee for students, children, the elderly and groups of more than four people is 5€.

Britain plans to build commercial spaceport

Britain plans to build commercial spaceport | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
Eight possible locations for spaceport will be announced by ministers at Farnborough air show on Tuesday
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

Britain is to build a commercial spaceport that will be used to launch manned missions and commercial satellites. A list of eight locations for the spaceport – which could be used by Virgin Galactic and the US company XCOR to launch space tourism flights – has been drawn up by the government and will be announced on Tuesday at the Farnborough air show.

It is planned to have Britain's spaceport in operation by 2018 even though a decision has yet to be made on its location. Several sites around the country have been linked to spaceport plans and are now being studied by officials.

"We have worked out the regulatory regime we need to launch spaceships in Britain and assessed what kind of aviation checks will have to be imposed when we put craft into space," said the science minister, David Willetts. "In the wake of that work we have now created a shortlist of locations for the first British spaceport."

Details of the list are being kept secret until Tuesday but experts believe locations could include the north of Scotland, Bristol, Norfolk and the Outer Hebrides. The first of these possible sites – Lossiemouth on the Moray coast of Scotland – is already home to a major helicopter rescue centre and has been pinpointed by Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic as a desirable site for launching its spaceplanes, a proposal that has been backed enthusiastically by the Scottish National party.

Formula E: do the guilt-free thrills of electric car racing herald a new era for motor sport?

Formula E: do the guilt-free thrills of electric car racing herald a new era for motor sport? | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
With ‘fan boosts’ and city centre circuits, race organisers are breaking taboos in the hope of making electric cars cool
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

The noise is part spaceship, part jet engine and part Tron bike, according to Alex Tai, the head of Virgin’s Formula E racing team. The high-powered, all-electric cars zooming around the Donington Park race track are certainly far quieter than the chest-rumbling, ear-splitting noise that hits Formula One fans.

But the new Formula E championship is breaking a host of racing taboos: special music to trumpet crashes, female drivers, city centre circuits and, most controversially, a fan vote to give the most popular drivers power boosts to blast them past opponents during races. Nonetheless, racing royalty from Alain Prost to Sir Frank Williams are backing the new series, with Emerson Fittipaldi declaring it a “new era for motor racing”. It has now been approved by world motor sport’s governing body, the FIA, and is funded by stars including Leonardo DiCaprio and major carmakers including Audi, Renault and Indian giant Mahindra.

“There is a need for motor sport to be relevant,” says Formula E chief executive, Alejandro Agag, at the Donington trackside during the first public testing sessions last week. He claims lofty ambitions for the zero-emission race series: to make electric cars sexy, accelerate improvements in the technology and tackle city-choking air pollution and, ultimately, climate change. Agag, like most of those involved, have roots in Formula One and are reluctant to criticise the brash, gas-guzzling F1 circus seen by some as an eco-horror show.

Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

GREEK NEWS AGENDA: New Book: Greece from Exit to Recovery | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:
Two Greek economic analysts Michael Mitsopoulos, economist at the Hellenic Federation of Enterprises, and Theodore Pelagidis, professor of economics at the University of Piraeus seek to explain the Greek financial crisis—from beginning to end, in their book Greece : From Exit to Recovery?, which was recently published by the Brookings Institution Press. In part I, the authors explore the lead up to Greece’s adoption of the euro arguing that the ensuing challenges were foreseeable. In the second section Mitsopoulos and Pelagidis analyse discrete sectors of the economy, paying special attention to labor and finance—and the mistakes creditors made in focusing on reducing Greek incomes—rather than increasing competitiveness on non-labour costs. In part III, the authors seek to understand why Greek companies spend relatively little on research and development and indicate that policy decisions largely determine R&D performance in the private sector. Finally, Mitsopoulos and Pelagidis bring to the fore of specific policy proposals to improve the situation.

Eli Wallach, Multifaceted Actor, Dies at 98 | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

Eli Wallach, who was one of his generation’s most prominent and prolific character actors in film, onstage and on television for more than 60 years, died on Tuesday. He was 98.

His death was confirmed by his daughter Katherine.

A self-styled journeyman actor, the versatile Mr. Wallach appeared in scores of roles, often with his wife, Anne Jackson. No matter the part, he always seemed at ease and in control, whether playing a Mexican bandit in the 1960 western “The Magnificent Seven,” a bumbling clerk in Ionesco’s allegorical play “Rhinoceros,” a henpecked French general in Jean Anouilh’s “Waltz of the Toreadors,” Clark Gable’s sidekick in “The Misfits” or a Mafia don in “The Godfather: Part III.”

Despite his many years of film work, some of it critically acclaimed, Mr. Wallach was never nominated for an Academy Award. But in November 2010, less than a month before his 95th birthday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awarded him an honorary Oscar, saluting him as “the quintessential chameleon, effortlessly inhabiting a wide range of characters, while putting his inimitable stamp on every role.”

It took 4 years of planning and as many failed trips to Denali National Park and Preserve to make this image a reality. Despite temps that dipped down colder than -40ºF causing the frost to win the battle with our car's defrost for the windshield, the conditions were nearly perfect! The wind was nonexistent (rare for this location). The moon was nearly full and coming from the southwest and after waiting hours, the lights danced magically for about 10 minutes before fading again for the night.

On the Absinthe Trail

On the Absinthe Trail | Politically Incorrect | Scoop.it
Visiting a region along the France-Switzerland border with rich ties to the once-banned spirit known as the Green Fairy.
Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

Sunbeams shot through the forest, lighting up the wispy fog on the path ahead. For over an hour I’d been walking up the mountain trail without seeing a soul, marching to the off-kilter orchestras of Swiss cowbells ringing their dull symphonies in nearby meadows, to which I added my own contrapuntal exhalations whenever I stopped to catch my breath. For several minutes, I was certain that I had lost my way. But eventually I spotted a sign for the goal I was seeking: La Fontaine Froide, it said, was somewhere up ahead.

A “cold fountain” wasn’t the only reason I’d come to this tiny Francophone valley in northwest Switzerland, just across the border from the Franche-Comté province of eastern France. I was looking for the fountain because its chilly water was said to be ideal for diluting — or “troubling,” as locals put it — a glass of absinthe, the area’s traditional alcoholic beverage. An intense spirit flavored with a bouquet of powerful herbs, absinthe had been the favorite drink of Impressionist painters, Romantic poets and the bons vivants of the belle epoque before being banned around Europe on the eve of World War I. There was supposed to be a bottle of the good stuff, as well as a glass, waiting to reward any visitor who survived the long hike up the mountain.

Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

Demetrios Georgalas's insight:

How Much Data is Created Every Minute an infographic Every minute massive amounts of it are being generated phone, website application across the Internet.

...I don’t anticipate the growth of data slowing down in my lifetime. There’s too much goodness to be mined from it all.

Recently, we decided to revisit the topic and found, not surprisingly, that the pace of data creation continued to accelerate. Our first infographic, for example, showed that Facebook users shared 684,478 pieces of content. Fast forward a couple of years and that number has exploded to 2,460,000 pieces. Insane....
