Tory staffer fired after supporting inquiry into missing and murdered Aboriginal women

Tory staffer fired after supporting inquiry into missing and murdered Aboriginal women | political shenanigans in Canada | Scoop.it
A Manitoba Conservative staffer who expressed support for a missing women's inquiry was fired for voicing a viewpoint that veered from the party line on the issue. Spencer Fernando, a member of the Progressive Conservative caucus in Manitoba, had recently attended a vigil for 15-year-old Aboriginal girl Tina Fontaine, whose body was found wrap
Annette Lengyel's insight:

"A public inquiry would accomplish something else of importance as well. It would send a clear message that the issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women is seen as worthy of national attention.

Injustice and despair thrives in the shadows. An inquiry could bring these things into the light. An inquiry would send a message that, while we can’t change our past, we are willing to learn from it.

Yes, an inquiry could bring up some dark truths. Yet, by facing those truths with clear eyes and open hearts, we can learn, grow, and respond together, as one nation."

A former senior adviser to the prime minister says Stephen Harper and the Conservatives should be worried about the trial of suspended Senator Mike Duffy because of "what Mike might have up his sleeve." Duffy's first court date on fraud, bribery and breach of trust charges is this week.

Harper hears you. Now shut up.

Harper hears you. Now shut up. | political shenanigans in Canada | Scoop.it
What if your parents used your allowance to convince you that you really wanted Brussels sprouts for dinner, not a fruit salad?

Turns out that’s what the Harper government has been doing to Canadians for years. While Canadians have been polled and focused-grouped to death on their policy priorities — which, consistently, seem to be health care, education, the environment, pensions and veterans — they’ve instead been fed a steady diet of made-in-Alberta priorities: skills development, Employment Insurance reform, temporary foreign workers and plenty of pipelines.

Oh, and let’s not forget the great cell phone competition boondoggle — where millions were spent to convince us we loathe our cell phone carriers, rather than actually doing anything about it.

Canada’s immigration system undergoing quiet, ugly revolution | Toronto Star | political shenanigans in Canada | Scoop.it
Ottawa has quietly made massive changes to our immigration policy as if those changes have nothing to do with the kind of society Canadians want to build for the future.
Annette Lengyel's insight:

Conservatives returning Canada to draconian immigration policies while also screwing Canadians out of jobs.  This at the behest of corporations who now apparently own the conservative party and hence our current government.  Corporations couldn't have done better if they wrote these policies themselves...oh wait...

'Basically, Human Trafficking'

'Basically, Human Trafficking' | political shenanigans in Canada | Scoop.it
A temporary foreign worker who sold massage devices and other products in mall kiosks has reported he and his colleagues worked hundreds of hours for no pay, while forced to live under constant threat of deportation. “It’s all organized from the start,” said Anton Soloviov, 25, who worked for 0860005 B.C. Ltd, a company run by B.C. resident Dor Mordechai and his wife, Anna Lepski. The couple operated kiosks in malls in B.C.’s Lower Mainland and on Vancouver Island, including in Nanaimo's Woodgrove Centre, where Soloviov worked. “They import you as a worker. Then they put you to 12-hours-a-day work…and they don’t pay you.
Annette Lengyel's insight:

Glad to see some light is finally being shed on Israeli organized crime in Canada--those aggressive mall kiosk workers?  Illegal Israeli workers trafficked by criminal syndicates in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand for starters.

Why Does Harper Still Support the Repressive, Misogynistic Saudi Regime?

Why Does Harper Still Support the Repressive, Misogynistic Saudi Regime? | political shenanigans in Canada | Scoop.it
Even the most ardent Conservative supporters must wonder what principled position is behind the recent government-sponsored arms deal with Saudi Arabia that will send over $10 billion worth of Light Armoured Vehicles to one of the most anti-woman and repressive countries in the world. Outside its borders, the Saudi royal family uses its immense wealth to promote and fund many of the most reactionary, anti-women social forces in the world. The Conservatives have ignored these abuses, staying quiet when the regime killed "Arab Spring" protesters and intervened in Bahrain. Worse still, the Harper government's hostility towards Iran and backing of last July's military takeover in Egypt partly reflects their pro-Saudi orientation.

Trudeau Criticized For Things He Never Said About Israel

Trudeau Criticized For Things He Never Said About Israel | political shenanigans in Canada | Scoop.it
OTTAWA — The fight over which federal political party best defends the interests of the Jewish community got nasty Friday when Conservatives slammed Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau for comments falsely attributed to him. Conservative MP Joyce Bateman criticized Trudeau in a press release for attacking Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s defence of Israel.
Annette Lengyel's insight:

//“Trudeau argued that Canada should take a more ‘balanced line’ regarding the Middle East, signifying a shift away from support for Israel,” Bateman’s news release said.
“Justin Trudeau is proclaiming his desire to befriend a radical regime that is determined to destroy the state of Israel,” she added, referring to Iran.

An unedited video of Trudeau’s interview with Salam Toronto, however, backs his office’s assertion that the Liberal leader never made those comments.

In the video, Trudeau accused Harper of developing foreign policy positions based on whether they will help the Tories’ electoral prospects in Canada."//

Corporations vs. Canada: The threat of treaty shopping - The Globe and Mail

Corporations vs. Canada: The threat of treaty shopping - The Globe and Mail | political shenanigans in Canada | Scoop.it
Annette Lengyel's insight:

"The Finance Department has quietly shelved plans to crack down on so-called “treaty shopping” by multinationals. The surprise move suspends a long campaign by Ottawa to stop what it says is rampant “abuse” of international tax treaties by companies seeking to duck Canadian taxes.

Back in 2013, then-finance minister Jim Flaherty laid out the rationale for thwarting these aggressive tax-avoidance schemes, saying it means Ottawa can “keep taxes low for Canadian families – families who work hard, play by the rules and pay their taxes.”

Mr. Flaherty’s successor, Joe Oliver, sees things a bit differently. Facing intense lobbying from resources companies and their tax advisers, Mr. Oliver apparently bought the argument that curbing treaty shopping would put a chill on foreign investment in places such as the Alberta oil sands, leaving Canada at a competitive disadvantage.

The flip side is that not squeezing corporations means individual Canadians must bear a disproportionate share of the country’s tax load. Unlike companies, Mr. Flaherty’s hard-working Canadians can’t use complex offshore tax structures."

Tory Senator Touts Degrees From Unaccredited Schools

Tory Senator Touts Degrees From Unaccredited Schools | political shenanigans in Canada | Scoop.it

in his choices forA Conservative senator earmarked as one of the Senate's top spenders holds a master’s degree from a school whose phone number directs calls to a customer helpline for a website that sells iPads and printers. Senator Don Meredith, a Toronto-area Pentecostal pastor, has a master's degree in religious studies from California State Christian University (CSCU) – an unaccredited and unregulated private institution that has shifted addresses at least four times within the last 10 years.

Annette Lengyel's insight:

Harper once again exercises poor judgement on his Senate picks--is he doing this on purpose because he has so little respect for the institution and can't abolish it unilaterally without constitutional change?  Is his plot to turn the Senate into a room full of clowns and unqualified hacks and destroy it from within?

CSEC dodges questions on relationship with Big Three telecom companies | political shenanigans in Canada | Scoop.it
Canadian spy agency head John Forster fielded questions from MPs, and says organization’s focus is foreign intelligence collection, not domestic
Annette Lengyel's insight:

Globally, concerns are mounting about governments forcing telecommunications firms to hand over bulk records that can be searched for intelligence leads. U.S. President Barack Obama last month reined in a sweeping spy program that secretly obliged the country’s phone companies to hand over citizens’ call records.

No such practises are known in Canada. But the Conservative government recently introduced a bill that would prevent anyone from suing banks and phone and Internet companies that hand records over to government authorities without warrants.//

Annette Lengyel's insight:

//"The Tribunal is an independent body established by the Harper Government in 2008 to make final and binding decisions on specific claims rejected by Canada. It has so far issued three decisions, all strongly in favour of the First Nations who filed the claims. Yet Canada has now applied for expansive and expensive judicial review of two of these decisions.

“The Harper Government simply refuses to respect the decisions of the Tribunal,” states Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, President of the Union of BC Indian Chiefs. “It is abusing and twisting the very process it created to resolve specific claims and move forward in a genuine spirit of truth and reconciliation with First Nations. This approach is costing the Canadian tax payer millions of dollars in unnecessary legal fees to avoid resolution of lawful obligations the government itself acknowledges are real and outstanding. Settling these claims through good faith negotiations would cost far less than passing this burden on to our children and grand children.”//
