EXCLUSIVE POLL: Republican Oberweis gaining on Sen. Durbin (D-IL) in U.S. Senate race (one side of the story) | The Political Side of Things | Scoop.it
The race to defeat one of the most powerful Democrats in the nation is narrowing — with incumbent U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin just seven percentage points ahead of Republican challenger Jim Oberweis, according to a new Early & Often Poll. In a year that’s expected to tilt toward Republicans across the nation, Durbin, the No. 2 Democrat in the U.S. Senate, is leading Oberweis, who is making his third run for the Senate, 47.8 percent to 40.5 percent, the survey commissioned by the Sun-Times’ political portal shows.

Exclusive Poll: Republican Rauner seen as reform candidate, opens big lead on "reformer" Quinn

Exclusive Poll: Republican Rauner seen as reform candidate, opens big lead on "reformer" Quinn | The Political Side of Things | Scoop.it
SPRINGFIELD — Gov. Pat Quinn has spent a political lifetime fine-tuning his image as a government reformer, but a new Early & Often Poll shows Republican Bruce Rauner may have wrested that mantle away from the governor. The incumbent Chicago Democrat also has spent months trying to portray the multimillionaire private equity investor from Winnetka as an out-of-touch “billionaire,” yet voters in Illinois appear evenly split about which gubernatorial candidate best understands their everyday concerns.

Could a Republican be elected governor of Illinois, the 'worst-run state' in the Union?

Could a Republican be elected governor of Illinois, the 'worst-run state' in the Union? | The Political Side of Things | Scoop.it

f you want to know which individual political race has the biggest stakes in 2014, look no further than the Land of Lincoln.

The Illinois governor’s race pits incumbent Pat Quinn, a Democrat, against upstart non-politician Bruce Rauner. Why are the stakes so huge? Because Illinois is arguably the worst-run state in America. It’s a blue state that has been run for many years by corrupt and bungling politicians, including Rod Blagojevich, who went to jail for trying to sell a U.S. Senate seat, and Mr. Quinn, who has run the state’s finances into the gutter.

Ken Feltman's insight:

Maybe the voters have had enough.

Gene Callahan, staple of Illinois politics for more than 40 years, dies at 80

Gene Callahan, staple of Illinois politics for more than 40 years, dies at 80 | The Political Side of Things | Scoop.it
Gene Callahan, father of Rep. Cheri Bustos and former chief of staff to the late Sen. Alan Dixon, passed away early Monday morning at the age of 80.
Ken Feltman's insight:

To know Gene Callahan was to have as good a friend as you ever needed, anywhere, anytime.

He navigated the swirling waters of Illinois and Washington politics with savvy - and very gentle - street-smarts. As chief of staff for Senator Alan Dixon of Illinois and head of government relations for Major League Baseball, he specialized in building relationships and coalitions.

His daughter, Rep. Cheri Bustos of Illinois, inherited his loyalty and ability to know those little but important things about countless people.
