Police and civilian safety would improve if police would take a step back from confrontations and call for back-up.

Rob Duke's insight:

You can assign these rights wherever you want, but it means that policing changes.  There are likely to be fewer deaths that are tragic, but there's going to be more aggressive offenders who know the police have a duty to retreat.

James Comstock called Iowa cops when his son took off with his truck; the 19-year-old was shot dead in the vehicle VIDEO
Rob Duke's insight:

Bit more going on here than the article would have you believe....

The force looks reasonable given the suspect's actions, but there's another policy question: Do you pursue in this situation?

The suspect is known and the pursuit is clearly a public danger.  It would have been more prudent to call off the pursuit and seek a warrant.

Heather Wiinikka's comment, January 26, 2:08 AM
There is definitely a lot more to this story that they are not telling. It would have been alot better all the way around if they did call of the pursuit and seek a warrant. I also think that the father should be some what responsible. Honestly if you were to call the cops here in Alaska to teach your kid a lesson they would ignore it they do not have time for that and it is not the police responsibility to help you help discipline your children.

Let’s face it, we need to introduce minimum pricing on alcohol — and legalise other drugs

Let’s face it, we need to introduce minimum pricing on alcohol — and legalise other drugs | Police Problems and Policy | Scoop.it

In the last few years alcohol has become the leading cause of death in men under 50 years of age, and it will soon achieve a similar deadly status in women. Alcohol-induced liver deaths have quadrupled in the past 40 years whereas deaths from heart and lung disease have halved.

The reasons for this are well established – alcohol is cheaper and more easily available than it has been since the gin-epidemic of the 1700s and half of all 15-16 year olds are becoming dangerously intoxicated at least once a month. A 21 year woman was recently given a liver transplant for cirrhosis induced by her having essentially an alcohol-only diet since aged ten. Alcohol misuse costs the UK about £30 billion per year of which about £3.5 billion is in health care costs with over 1 million hospital admissions for alcohol-related disorders at the last count. Policing public disorder and alcohol road accidents cost the taxpayer over £6 billion a year.

Ziggi Ivan Santini's curator insight, Today, 5:50 AM

"Today the cost of alcohol misuse in the UK is around £30 billion per year —about £1000 per tax-payer. Estimates that have modelled the value of minimum pricing suggest that a 50p unit price would lead to at least a 10 per cent reduction in consumption!"

Should LA Save a Beautiful Symbol of a Terrible LAPD?

Should LA Save a Beautiful Symbol of a Terrible LAPD? | Police Problems and Policy | Scoop.it
Downtown LA's Parker Center, the long-time home of the LAPD, has been headed toward demolition for about a year now (the police moved to new headquarters nearby in 2009),...
Rob Duke's insight:

There's been so much good done by police, it's crazy to either say that all police are good; or to try to nullify all the good that has been done, (and continues to be done).  Parker Center should be saved because it's historic to the City of Los Angeles and to the LAPD.

This article perpetuates a moral panic that does little to encourage the kind of dialogue that can result in improved police performance.
