Chaos spreads in Baltimore as police try to restore order

Chaos spreads in Baltimore as police try to restore order | Police Problems and Policy | Scoop.it
Maryland's governor declares a state of emergency and the city's mayor implements a curfew as violence following the funeral of Freddie Gray ensues
Rob Duke's insight:

Gotta restore order. Hold those responsible accountable (charges for those who are criminally culpable, civil settlement from the City, new Police Chief, etc.); and start a meaningful dialog with the community.

Freddie Gray, 'Rough Rides' and the Challenges of Improving Police Culture

Freddie Gray, 'Rough Rides' and the Challenges of Improving Police Culture | Police Problems and Policy | Scoop.it
Police say that intentionally banging a suspect around in the back of a van isn't common practice. But the range of slang terms to describe the practice suggests it's more common that anyone would hope—and a roster of cases show that Freddie Gray is hardly the first person whose serious injuries allegedly occurred while in police transit. Citizens have accused police of using aggressive driving to rough suspects up for decades in jurisdictions across the country. Though experts don't think it's a widespread practice, rough rides have injured many people, frayed relationships, and cost taxpayers, including Baltimore's, millions of dollars in damages.
Rob Duke's insight:

Screen tests were rare, but you did hear of them.  It was a good way to get fired.

Wanted: cops with people skills

Wanted: cops with people skills | Police Problems and Policy | Scoop.it
“The public want us to come up and deal with a neighbour who is mowing their lawn at 3am. They want us to deal with their disruptive child. They want us to deal with the crazy person who is walking down the street shouting.” As crime has fallen across America since the 1990s, policing has shifted more towards social work than the drama seen on TV. Police culture, however, has not caught up.
Rob Duke's insight:

This is the truth.  So much can be solved with your strongest muscle, sharpest blade, and most powerful weapon (your brain and your voice).

The Keystroke Cops: A look at the role local data can play in criminal justice reform

The Keystroke Cops: A look at the role local data can play in criminal justice reform | Police Problems and Policy | Scoop.it
From on-body cameras, to civil asset forfeiture (a policy that has come under heavy fire) many facets of the justice system could eventually benefit from the additional data transparency Shaw mentioned.

Coupled with communities that get chief data officers in place to manage data releases and tools like FOR Atlanta that visualize the data, the public will have access to information that was once just in the purview of government. Maybe then local communities will again feel confident in the dangerous work law enforcement provides for citizens every day.

Judge orders prison sentences for 2 South Carolina officers who used Taser on woman 8 times

Judge orders prison sentences for 2 South Carolina officers who used Taser on woman 8 times | Police Problems and Policy | Scoop.it
One small-town South Carolina police officer has been sentenced to 18 months in prison, and a second to a year and a day for unnecessarily shocking a mentally disabled woman with a Taser at least eight times.

Franklin Brown received the longer sentence Monday because he shocked 40-year-old Melissa Davis after she had been handcuffed in April 2013. The other Marion police officer, Eric Walters, stopped Davis early one morning to see if she had broken into a home. Neither Walters nor other officers have explained how the incident escalated so quickly.

Six Things I Learned While Traveling The United Kingdom In An Airstream Trailer

Six Things I Learned While Traveling The United Kingdom In An Airstream Trailer | Police Problems and Policy | Scoop.it
Nothing that I learned changed my forecast of the U.K. election, which will be held May 7. That’s partly because I, personally, don’t have a forecast of the U.K. election. Instead, after a less-than-brilliant performance going at it on our own in 2010, FiveThirtyEight has partnered with the three U.K.-based academics behind electionforecast.co.uk, whose forecast you can find here.

But my visit did help me understand more about why the polls behave as they do in the U.K. and why the three academics behind our forecast — Chris Hanretty, Ben Lauderdale and Nick Vivyan — designed their model as they did. It also helped me understand more about the differences between the U.S. and U.K. election systems — and why this U.K. election is so hard to call.

Jake Gyllenhaal: 'End of Watch changed my life' | Police Problems and Policy | Scoop.it
So why is the force so well-represented on film? "It's such a unique department. When they get involved in scandal it's in a big way. I think it's the visually coolest agency. They have that classic look – they look like the police. Their demeanour and style; the famous command presence of their officers. Everyone's always struck by it. Those guys are intense! They're so confident. They're like military."
Rob Duke's insight:

Yup, cops wear blue and drive black & whites!

Seriously, though, an interesting article.  I didn't agree with everything I saw in this film, but they mostly got it right.
