Now this is what an industry looks like when it goes into free-fall.

Market research firm IDC reported yesterday that worldwide personal computers had their sharpest drop ever for a single quarter, plummeting nearly 14 percent compared to the first three months of 2012. Among the big players, only one company, Lenovo, shipped as many units as last year. The carnage was worst for HP, which saw its PC sales tumble 23 percent, and ACER, which suffered a 31.3 drop. But as AllThingsD notes, not even Apple escaped unscathed. Its Mac sales slowed 7.5 percent in North America, its top market.

The 10 Stealth Economic Trends That Rule the World Today

The 10 Stealth Economic Trends That Rule the World Today | police news and crime news | Scoop.it
Old trends: Soaring US carbon dioxide emissions, skyrocketing medical costs, out-of-control deficits. New trends: Tumbling emissions, creeping medical costs, falling deficits.

5. Old Trend: College is becoming more and more important.
New Trend: College is no more important than before.

If you want a good job, go to college. This has been a maxim of American life since the 1980s, when the “college premium” – the extra income boost from going to college – truly soared into the stratosphere. But an interesting thing has happened in the last decade and a half – the college premium has stagnated. College is still valuable, but by at least one measure, it's not getting more valuable each year. Perhaps that's why American college enrollment declined last year. Expect that to put a damper on skyrocketing college tuition and soaring student loans.

Igor Tishkin's curator insight, October 3, 2013 3:19 AM

В статье приводятся примеры, кейсы, как представители малого бизнеса находят клиентов в социальных сетях.

Например, вот Эвола, 33, терапист, которая нашла клиентов в соцсетях:

en Evola, 33, a massage therapist and a registered dietitian, needed a boost after she left a corporate job to start her own practice in Chicago.

She got it from social media.

А вот Барнес, 49, который запустил трэвел-бизнес и обнаружил клиентов в социальных сетях.

Tom Byrnes, 49, an entrepreneur from Ireland, started Fun Packs, a company that makes travel entertainment toys for children. Byrnes says he's doubled his business since he started using social media.

Как же им это все удается? Неужели группы Вконтакте и Facebook приводят им столько клиентов, что они довольны и счастливы? Почему же в России это не работает?

Потому что, как минимум, они вели персональный блог и постили ссылки в соцсети. А не в группы.

A recent survey by HubSpot, a marketing software company, reports that 52% of marketers have found leads through Facebook so far in 2013, and 43% of marketers have found customers through LinkedIn and company blogs.

Я уверен, что корпоративный блог - это SMM, а не ведение групп в Вконтакте. Кто со мной поспорит? В комменты плз.

Sink or Swim: How to Stay Afloat While Managing Social Media Presence for your Small Business

Sink or Swim: How to Stay Afloat While Managing Social Media Presence for your Small Business | police news and crime news | Scoop.it

A recent study conducted by the online marketing firm Vertical Response and reported on in Forbes concludes that small businesses are spending more time on social media but struggling with the added workload it represents. Perhaps as a consequence, most are doing social media marketing in a vacuum because they’re not tracking results, which means they have no way of quantifying if their time and effort are paying off. “Our survey confirms that small businesses are understanding the value of social media,” says Vertical Response CEO and founder Janine Popick. “They’re spending more time doing it, and investing more money into it at a faster rate. But the extra work will likely lead to time management issues, especially for the small business owner who’s handling social media on top of all the other responsibilities of running a company. This implies that small businesses are in need of tactics and tools now to help them save time.”...

“Any investment had to speak to the university—forward-looking, open to light, and defining the campus as a place,” says Robert Bogomolny, president of the University of Baltimore. “The only thing I wouldn’t do was contextualism,” he adds, referring to brick-faced structures built in Baltimore in the last decade. The Behnisch–Ayers Saint Gross team earned the commission for the Angelos Center after a 2008 open competition whose shortlist also included Foster + Partners, Dominique Perrault Architecture, Moshe Safdie and Associates, and SmithGroup.
