Well I think this was over done and dramatized to much but the conflict in question is still in there. The recording of police behavior, legal or not legal, ok or not ok, acceptable or unacceptable? I don't know where to draw the line on this one. I mean i can see how this would be detrimental to the police in many ways. Constantly looking over your shoulder, especially from the people you are trying to protect, is not a healthy thing. Also the public in general doesn't understand the intricacies of an officers job or life. Or they might have only recorded the last bit of a confrontation and didn't get the whole story. Plus media in general always has this tendency to put everyone involved in a bad light. It never really reflects the situation in my opinion. Recording police conduct just doesn't seem professional in any way.
Madeleine M-Stanley's comment, December 14, 2012 2:00 AM
I agree that this report is a bit dramatic, but if something like this happened to me, I would be equally as outraged. I do not believe the officers should be acting in a way they feel is necessary to cover up. If there behavior was something that needed to be prevented from becoming public knowledge, then there's a problem. A situation like this leads me to believe that this is a case where are officer needs more accountability and supervision and less discretion.

Holy cow! Is this real. I feel like this is a total violations of this guys rights. It seems like kids around this same age start playing "gun fights" and what not. I would understand sort of if social services went to his house to make sure guns were in a safe place but arresting him and strip searching him is wrong. They had no reasonable proof that he had a gun on him, let alone are second amendment right gives us the right to bear arms. When I was that age, I hadn't shot a gun yet, but I knew what they looked like, what they were used for, and that they were dangerous.
Jesse Morris's comment, December 12, 2012 5:29 AM
Well, certainly it is something to be concerned about, four year olds drawing guns and what not, but the police and the school went way overboard on this one. The obvious thing to do would be to pull the child aside and ask her some questions and then inquire of the father about what the child said. Then take it from their, however a doodle on a paper does not mean time in jail....that's just ridiculous.
Madeleine M-Stanley's comment, December 14, 2012 2:12 AM
This is an excellent example of how norms can vary in different regions. If a child here in Alaska drew a picture of their father holding a gun, nobody would assume the child was in danger. I understand that there must be efforts made to ensure that children do not have access to firearms for their safety and the safety of others; however, strip searching a father and interrogating his three children without any attempts to discuss the matter with him first is more than a little outrageous. I understand that there is a different perception of guns in other places, but education about gun safety is something is something that can reduce irrational fear about the presence of guns and provide a safer environment for everyone involved.

Two Officers Charged in Fatal Beating of Mentally Ill Man

Donna Sharp's comment, December 7, 2012 9:43 PM
This is just unacceptable. What’s even more intolerable is that there were four other officers on scene that didn’t take part but just sat back and allowed this to happen and none of them are being charged for anything! I hope that both officers charged are convicted and receive their maximum sentences. There is no reason what so ever that brutal force had to be used on an unarmed man especially when it was a six to one ratio, with all the officers on scene they could have detained him without major injury if that was their true intention.
Jesse Morris's comment, December 12, 2012 5:17 AM
"Trying to use less force, not more." How is beating a man until he dies using less force? Anyway, this is obviously one of those circumstances in which police used the wrong discretion, or none at all and used WAY to much force. Hell it doesn't sound like the situation required any force to begin with. Seems to me that the officers just got fed up dealing with the guy for god knows how long and took their rage out on him....consequently killing him. Yeah, not a lot of thought went into this from the officers involved. What i want to knwo is why the other 4 cops just stood there.. Thats teh big ticket question.
biggamevince's comment, December 12, 2012 9:04 PM
Officers can use any force necessary to detain a suspect but there are laws against excessive force. The man showed obvious signs of having a mental illness which is why he couldn’t obey the officers commands. The officers should have sent him to jail then to a mental institution. When is it ok to continually beat someone while detained? The defense attorney who represented one of the officers the other officer were trying "to use less force, not more," in mashing Thomas to a pulp. This statement is illogical when the man was beaten to death.
