Businessmen and professional gamblers will meet in Las Vegas this week for a poker tournament with the biggest top prize in poker history.


High rollers from the worlds of business and professional poker will sit down in Las Vegas Sunday for the start of a three-day poker tournament that costs $1 million to enter. They'll play for an international charitable cause and the biggest top prize in poker history - more than $18 million.

To prime itself for the U.S. debut of legal online poker, MGM Resorts International, owner of such Las Vegas Strip monuments as the MGM Grand, the Bellagio and the Mirage, wanted a partner that knew the ropes.


So last October it hooked up with Bwin.Party Digital Entertainment Plc, a London-listed, Gibraltar-based specialist that rakes in more from Web betting than any other publicly traded company. MGM Resorts took 25 percent of a new venture 65 percent owned by Bwin.Party, with smaller Las Vegas casino operator Boyd Gaming getting the remaining 10 percent.

Ongame Network Ltd. and Shuffle Master Inc. have reached agreements to make Ongame's Internet poker system available through systems operated by Las Vegas slot machine makers Bally Technologies Inc. and Aristocrat Technologies Inc.


Casino supplier Shuffle Master, also based in Las Vegas, in March announced plans to buy Ongame Network from Internet gambling company bwin.party Services (Austria) GmbH. Shuffle Master is paying about $25.7 million and potentially another $13.2 million depending on when and if Internet poker is legalized in the United States.
