California Resurrecting Online Poker Bill From the Dead | This Week in Gambling - Poker News | Scoop.it
With news that the state of Delaware is on the cusp of legalizing online poker following a measure sailing through the Senate on Wednesday, California is trying desperately to resurrect its own Web poker bill, one fraught with opposition.

The measure is currently being amended by its sponsors in preparation of a possible hearing on the issue prior to a legislative summer recess set for July 6th.

The bill’s sponsors, Senators Roderick Wright and Darrell Steinberg, are in talks with gambling interests to try and come up with a way to appease the tribal casino operators, many of whom are opposed to SB1463 as it currently stands.

California's online poker problem

California's online poker problem | This Week in Gambling - Poker News | Scoop.it
Despite federal and state bans on online poker, as many as 1 million Californians spend a total of about $300 million annually playing the game — typically on websites based outside the country.

Lawmakers have been debating for more than four years whether to create a legal outlet for these players but have been stymied by opposition from powerful Indian gambling interests. Those forces appear to have scuttled a new proposal by state Sens. Roderick Wright (D-Inglewood) and Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento) that was sidelined by a Senate committee last week just before a scheduled vote. There's a good argument to be made for legalizing and regulating online poker or, conversely, working more aggressively to ban it. With the tribes pulling the strings in Sacramento, however, California isn't doing either.

PPA Posts New Petition for Legalization of US Online Poker

PPA Posts New Petition for Legalization of US Online Poker | This Week in Gambling - Poker News | Scoop.it

The US-based Poker Players’ Alliance (PPA) has posted a new petition to US legislators, urging them to legalize and regulate the US online poker industry at the earliest possible. The petition attempts to draw the attention of nearly a dozen lawmakers to the urgent need to create a proper regulatory framework for online poker in the US.

The petition requires the signature of 10,000 avid online poker players, and so far, around 5,000 players have already signed it. Those interested can view this petition and sign it at www.theppa.org/changepetition2.
This petition, which was started by Rich Muny, vice president (player relations) for PPA, is titled “It Is Time for Congress to Pass Legislation to License Online Poker!” It begins by requesting elected officials to “seek to license the game” instead of attempting to ban it in the United States as adults must be given the right to play online poker in the comforts of their own homes if they wish.
