Svenska Spel investigates high-risk VLTs, Lina Sennevall GamblingCompliance

Swedish gambling monopoly Svenska Spel is investigating its video lottery terminal brand “Vegas”, after years of criticism that the terminals are increasing the numbers of problem gamblers. The lucrative “Vegas” terminals, located in restaurants and pubs, offer games that are classed as "high-risk" with one in ten players in Sweden being classed as a problem gambler.

Svenska Spel has more than 6,700 terminals located around Sweden that have a maximum betting limit of 5 SEK ($0.7) per hit and a 500 SEK ($75) jackpot. Each licence allows a maximum of five terminals. The Vegas terminals are the most lucrative product on Svenska Spel’s platform with a turnover of just over 2bn SEK ($300m) in 2011.

Swedish studies have suggested the number of terminals located in deprived areas was higher than numbers in wealthy areas.

Betsson and Unibet hoover up the competition, Gaming Intelligence

Mergers and acquisitions have come thick and fast in the Nordic region in recent weeks. First Unibet bought Bet24, the online gaming company of Sweden’s Modern Times Group, for €13.5m. Then Betsson marched into the fray with its €65m acquisition of Nordic Gaming Group (NGG) and its NordicBet, Tobet and Triobet brands.

Betsson CEO Magnus Silfverberg believes it important to note Betsson is the region’s largest operator although he can also laugh at himself for doing so. (And both companies recorded revenues of around €190m at the end of 2011.) Unibet CEO Henrik Tjärnström, for his part, is keen to point out that Betsson had a couple of bad quarters and has bought growth twice (with Betsafe last year and now NGG) to address that.

If the two companies share a nationality and a penchant for acquisitions there is a lot more that divides them. Predictably both attribute the consolidation of the Nordic market to the seemingly unstoppable march of regulation - both now in Denmark but also in anticipation of change in Sweden. The drive towards economies of scale is an important factor in the consolidation.

Sweden’s ruling parties unite to back gambling reforms, Gaming Intelligence

Sweden’s ruling parties unite to back gambling reforms, Gaming Intelligence | Poker & eGaming News | Scoop.it

All four of the centre-right coalition government’s political parties are now in agreement on the need for liberalisation of the monopolised market. Also the Swedish Labor party is in favor of a regulation.

The experience of Danish liberalisation has been influential with some of its neighbours’ key industry figures visiting the Swedish parliament over recent months to discuss their experience.

The Swedish national audit office is due to publish a report on the sector within the next few weeks.

Swedish National Auditors wants to regulate the egaming market, Riksrevisionen

Swedish National Auditors wants to regulate the egaming market, Riksrevisionen | Poker & eGaming News | Scoop.it

The Swedish National Audit Office (Riskrevisionen) has concluded its two-year investigation into the Swedish gambling market recommending the government officially opens up the sector to private operators and potentially paving the way of the introduction of regulation.

Lack of control on the unregulated online market is a main concern. The current monopoly operator Svenska Spel is criticised as “not [taking] sufficient account of the risk of gambling addiction and [being able to] do more to counter this.”

IN SWEDISH: Spelet om spelet, Fokus

IN SWEDISH: Spelet om spelet, Fokus | Poker & eGaming News | Scoop.it

Growth sees Svenska Spel revenues return to 2007 levels

Svenska Spel CEO Lennart Käll has once again highlighted his company’s inability to effectively compete with overseas operators due to its licence restrictions, stating that while the company’s gaming revenues have returned to the level of a few years ago, the Swedish gaming market as a whole has grown by approximately SEK1.0bn (US$149m).

“The range of offerings over the Internet, mobile and tablets is increasing at a rapid rate. Today, casino games online and on mobile phones account for much of the growth of the market, a form of gambling that Svenska Spel in its current situation does not have permission to offer.”

“The positive quarter is encouraging but we still have a challenge to counter the loss of market share to our competitors,” added Käll.

“To increase our competitiveness we need to increase our investment in the digital platform. To finance an increased level of investment, we will improve cost efficiency and better define roles and responsibilities, implementing an extensive restructuring program over the coming years.”
