Interview with the Queen of French Poker, InsidePokerBusiness

Interview with the Queen of French Poker, InsidePokerBusiness | Poker & eGaming News | Scoop.it

Achieving the status of market leader in the online poker sector in France is no mean feat. But it is what French firm Winamax has managed to do. Overtaking the world leader in cash game player numbers for the past seven months, maintaining that lead and organising the country's biggest poker tour are some of the achievements Winamax has accomplished since France regulated its online gaming and betting industry in May 2010.

If some doubted the potential and long-term viability of the Winamax project: the group set on a single-market, single-product strategy, backed up by huge marketing spend, the French operator has confounded its doubters and is now looking to expand beyond its home market. Winamax is also different when set against many of its competitors: all its employees work out of a central Paris office, meaning it pays all French corporation taxes and VAT, the latter charge alone adding an extra 20% to the company's operating costs.

William Hill to fight UK “point of consumption tax”, iGaming Post | Poker & eGaming News | Scoop.it

William Hill, Britain’s biggest bookmaker is preparing a legal challenge against the UK governments plans to tax online gambling in this country from the end of 2014. 15% duty on bookmakers that offer online betting in this country in an effort to raise about £200m a year.

Almost all UK bookmakers, including Ladbrokes, have shifted their online businesses to Gibraltar and the Isle of Man over the past decade, where tax is less restrictive.

Lawyers for the gambling industry warn the proposed tax is “illegal” under European law as it is an attempt to restrict the free movement of goods and services for tax purposes.

Social gaming is transitioning from Facebook to AppStore and GooglePlay, Bloomberg

Social gaming is transitioning from Facebook to AppStore and GooglePlay, Bloomberg | Poker & eGaming News | Scoop.it

CrowdStar has proclaimed mobile as the new driving force behind the social gaming scene, with CEO Peter Relan stating that the "writing is on the wall" for Facebook's hand in the market.

The social network Facebook remains unable to get to grips with users transitioning to its mobile version, leaving studios that depend on the original web edition high and dry. "Facebook's biggest challenge this year has been figuring out the transition to mobile - they're seeing users flock from Facebook.com to its mobile app," said Relan.

"There is the obvious advertising problem on mobile. However, there's also a huge technological problem which is: games cannot be embedded in Facebook's mobile app. "As a result, Apple and Google are stepping in and driving the revenues of mobile games on the App Store and Google Marketplace."

As a result, Relan said 'irrational investor panic' is the main cause behind a 70 percent drop in Zynga's stock, with those with cash to invest looking to cut ties with developers too reliant on Facebook.

Indeed, CrowdStar dropped all development on games for Facebook.com in favour of a focus on smartphones back in April, though the company is still utilising the recently launched App Center for mobile.

Schleswig-Holstein to “quickly” join Interstate Treaty, Stephen Carter at CasinoChoice

Schleswig-Holstein to “quickly” join Interstate Treaty, Stephen Carter at CasinoChoice | Poker & eGaming News | Scoop.it

The breakaway German federal state of Schleswig-Holstein is to abolish its own gambling law and join the new Interstate Gambling Treaty recently ratified by the other 15 Länder, it confirmed Tuesday.

Germany’s northernmost state recently issued seven online sports betting licences to companies including bet365, Betfair and bwin under the Gambling Act passed by the previous government. However, the new SPD-led Cabinet announced in Kiel this week that Schleswig-Holstein (SH) would join the restrictive new common gambling treaty that came into force on 1 July, confirming the intent first outlined in its manifesto shortly after coming to power.

Germany’s new Interstate Treaty replaces the state monopoly on online sports betting with the issue of up to 20 licences to private operators, came into force on 1 July, alongside a prohibitive 5% turnover tax on sports bets and a continued ban on online poker and casino.

The game merger and acquisition craze is still hot in 2012 thanks to the rapid growth in the number and size of game deals this year.

Two big deals signal the shift that is happening this year toward mobile and cloud gaming. Zynga bought OMGPOP for at least $180 million as it sought to capture the benefits of the fast-growing mobile gaming title Draw Something. And Sony gave a big endorsement to cloud gaming with its $380 million acquisition of Gaikai.

In 2011, Zynga was among the top three in all of tech in terms of the number of companies acquired — 13.

In Asia this year, where lots of game companies have gone public and are flush with cash. NetEase has the most cash with $2.2 billion in cash. Tencent has $1.25 billion. Shanda Interactive has $1.2 billion. Ren Ren has $1.05 billion. Others with a lot of cash include Sohu, Shanda Gaming, cYou, Perfect World, Giant Interactive, KongZhong, The9, and Taomee.

Game M&A deals totaled $3.5 billion in 2011, compared to less than $1.5 billion in 2010. Seven major game companies (Zynga, Gree, WeMade, Tencent, IGT, Rovio, and Nexon) acquired 21 companies in the first half of 2012. As you can see in the chart below, online games were the hottest category for game acquisitions, accounting for 71.5 percent of deals in 2011, compared to just 43.2 percent of deals in 2010.

Mobile games would account for the bulk of game-related M&A deals in 2013. Mobile is expected to account for 42 percent of all deals in gaming in 2013, while online will account for 39 percent. Soltys noted that smartphone penetration of the U.S. population is now at 50 percent. William Hill and Ladbrokes pull plug on German market, Daniel Macadam, GamblingCompliance

William Hill, the UK’s largest bookmaker, confirmed last week it had pulled out of the German sports betting market, joining rivals such as Asian powerhouse 188Bet.

Operators have to grapple with a 5 percent turnover tax on betting, one of the highest in Europe, after Germany’s Bundestag approved the rate in June. There are also strict controls on advertising, customer spending and in-play betting, an increasingly integral product for online bookmakers, under the new Interstate Treaty on Gambling passed by 15 of Germany’s 16 regions.

One operator that cannot afford to pull out of the market is Bwin.Party, the world’s largest publicly listed online gambling company. Analysts have predicted a dent of up to €50m in Bwin.Party earnings from the new German regulations, and co-chief executive Norbert Teufelberger admitted at WGES there was “a long road ahead”. Still, Teufelberger insisted they could make money under the new laws.

Stock tanking as Zynga misses already low expectations, Tricia Duryee at AllThings

Stock tanking as Zynga misses already low expectations, Tricia Duryee at AllThings | Poker & eGaming News | Scoop.it

Mark Pincus cites some good things that have happened:

- Zynga is now reaching 300 million monthly users.

- The company’s mobile footprint is now reaching 33 million daily active users, a five-fold increase, to make Zynga the largest mobile game network.

He said three factors led to a disappointing quarter:

- Declines in engagement and bookings due in part to changes Facebook made to its network, which favored new games.

- The Ville launched late in the quarter.

- Draw Something, which they acquired for $210 million, is not meeting expectations and suffered a dramatic decrease in daily active users.

Tribes want federal government to stop States from legalizing online gambling, Gambling911

Tribes want federal government to stop States from legalizing online gambling, Gambling911 | Poker & eGaming News | Scoop.it

“Tribes should be extremely hesitant to entrust their economic futures to the tender mercies of the 50 states, many of whom are still in financial crises and looking for new sources of revenue,” Bruce “Two Dogs” Bozsum said in testimony prepared for a Senate Indian Affairs Committee hearing on the Issue Thursday. Bozsum is chairman of the Mohegan Tribe of Uncasville, Conn., which has large casino operations.

Bozsum said his tribe has invested a “great deal of time” preparing Internet gambling regulations. “These regulations now stand ready to be implemented, and will meet or exceed the toughest regulations found anywhere in the world, including the new standards recently established in Nevada,” Boszum said.

According to the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, tribal gambling was a more than $27 billion industry in 2011, while commercial gambling was $35.6 billion and worldwide gambling revenues were $30 billion.

Nevada wants to share online liquidity and regulations cross borders, John Edwards GamblingCompliance

The Nevada Gaming Policy Committee on Wednesday unanimously recommended Governor Brian Sandoval propose online gambling compacts with neighboring states and potentially even foreign countries.

The action comes as Nevada prepares for the start of online poker inside its borders early next year, based on a 2011 U.S. Department of Justice legal opinion that states may allow intrastate, online gambling with the exception of sports wagers.

Nevada gambling regulators, however, fear other states may start competing for online gambling operators by relaxing their regulatory standards, causing a race to the bottom in online regulation.

Nevada officials worry that the federal bill may die, leaving states with widely varying standards for online gambling.

Nevada has only 2.7m people, but neighboring California has a population of 37.7m.
