IGT increased revenues by 13% due to DoubleDown, International Game Technology | Poker & eGaming News | Scoop.it

International Game Technology Reports Third Quarter Fiscal Year 2012 Results:

- Revenues increased 13% to $301 million in the third quarter, primarily due to increases in the interactive businesses.  Excluding the interactive businesses, revenues were flat.

- Gross margin decreased to 59% from 62% in the third quarter, primarily due to the inclusion of the interactive businesses and lower MegaJackpots® yields.

- Installed base increases were primarily driven by global lease operations growth.

- Excluding the positive impact from the interactive businesses, average revenue per unit per day in the third quarter was $50.20, down 4% sequentially and 7% over the prior year quarter, mainly due to lower MegaJackpots® yields and a higher mix of lower-yielding units in the installed base.

- Double Down bookings per daily user were $0.25 in the third quarter compared to $0.24 in the second quarter subsequent to acquisition.

- Double Down monthly users were 5.2 million as of June 30, 2012, a decrease of 7% when compared to March 31, 2012.

Churchill Downs applies for Nevada online poker license, Charles Rettmuller PokerUpdate

Churchill Downs applies for Nevada online poker license, Charles Rettmuller PokerUpdate | Poker & eGaming News | Scoop.it

A bit late out of the starting gate but not too many lengths behind, Churchill Downs Inc., the owners of the famed Kentucy racetrack that hosts the Kentucky Derby, have applied for an online poker license with the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

Through twinspires.com, the company offers advance-deposit online wagering for its many racetracks, which include Harlow's Casino Resort & Hotel in Greenville, Mississippi, Calder Casino & Race Course in Miami Gardens, Florida, Arlington Park racetrack in Arlington Heights, Illinois, and Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots in New Orleans, Louisiana. Twinspires also accepts bets on races from tracks throughout the country.

In 2010, Churchill Downs purchased Youbet.com and melded it into its twinspires website. In February of this year, the company bought Bluff Media, which focuses on poker-related content that includes BluffMagazine.com, as well as BluffPoker.com and Bluff.com. Known as the largest Internet horse-racing company in the United States, Churchill Downs is looking to expand its operations into online poker and has been “spending lots of time focusing on poker and egaming,” said Ted Gay, the company's chief strategy officer.

Churchill Downs is reportedly negotiating with several providers, such as Ongame and Playtech, in anticipation of rolling out its own online poker network.

So far in Nevada, gaming regulators have approved licenses for Bally Technologies and International Game Technology to provide interactive online gaming. Shuffle Master has received preliminary approval and is expected to be formally licensed later this month.

Foreign prostitution money funds Republican campaign, Martin John Williams GamblingCompliance

A controversial lawsuit against Las Vegas Sands and a union-backed website is offering material for attacks against the sources of major campaign contributions to the Republican Party. A Jewish lobby group announced a petition drive and social media campaign "demanding that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and the Republican Party reject tainted contributions from Republican mega-donor Sheldon Adelson".

That report referred to a statement to a Nevada court by sacked Sands China CEO Steve Jacobs on June 27 that Las Vegas Sands executives and Adelson personally exerted "control and direction from Las Vegas over acts of prostitution on Sands China's properties".

His allegations include Las Vegas Sands sidelining the board of its majority-owned Macau subsidiary, violating Hong Kong Stock Exchange rules, associating with known triad members, knowingly hiring and retaining illegal labour, allowing an unlicensed junket room and other dealings that could infringe the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

Sands owner Adelson has done multiple donations to Republican-linked Super PACs and non-profit groups, including $20m to the non-profit group Crossroads GPS, co-founded by former White House deputy chief of staff Karl Rove, and $5m each to Super PACs linked to House Speaker John Boehner and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor.   Adelson and his wife have promised as much as $100m to ensure that Romney enters the White House, making the Las Vegas Sands mogul a potential target for Democrat strategists.

On June 15, McCain predicted that scandals would inevitably result from the enormous amounts of donated money now washing through the system, including "foreign money", and the "corrupting effects" on elections would make a mockery of the 2010 Supreme Court decision that ended limits on "independent political expenditure" by corporations and unions, he said.

Meanwhile, the other US operator with an interest in Macau, MGM Resorts, has been targeted by the website CasinoLeaks-Macau, an ambitious trade union-funded and controlled project that compiles data, documents and analysis on Macau's junkets.

The International Union of Operating Engineers' (IUOE) campaign covers all of Macau's gaming operators, but has singled out MGM Resorts, demanding in writing that its independent directors probe subsidiary MGM China's dealings with the Suncity junket over alleged triad links. Suncity also operates at Sands China and Wynn Macau casinos.

Zynga’s Unleashed event June 26, Dean Takahashi at Venture Beat

Zynga’s Unleashed event June 26, Dean Takahashi at Venture Beat | Poker & eGaming News | Scoop.it

Zynga’s investors are eagerly awaiting the company’s Zynga Unleashed press event today at the social-game giant’s San Francisco headquarters.

As the darling of Facebook gaming, Zynga raised $1 billion at $9 billion valuation in December with its initial public offering. Since that time, the company’s stock rose from $10 a share to $14.69, only to plummet to around $6 a share yesterday.

The stock rose to its peak in March on rumors that the legalization of online gambling — should it ever happen across the U.S. — could benefit Zynga, which has the world’s largest online poker game (Zynga Poker) and has been investing in social casino games this year. Zynga is still dependent on Facebook for more than 90 percent of its revenues.

Zynga’s fundamentals, reflected in its 253 million monthly active users, have been pretty consistent in the past six months. It still has five times more users than its next closest competitor on Facebook. Zynga’s games still account for eight of the top 10 games in terms of monetization on the social network.

Zynga has nearly 3,000 employees, with more than 150 seasoned game designers. Zynga’s new Bubble Safari puzzle game has become the largest social game in daily active users. Zynga’s new slots game is now one of the top-grossing games on iOS (Apple’s iPod, iPad, and iPhone platforms).

Zynga has also begun recruiting a number of game developers for its Zynga.com platform, which exists on the web outside of Facebook. Zynga’s growth opportunity lies in advertising revenue, which is well under 10 percent of the company’s business. Mostly, Zynga makes money through virtual goods sales, but new advertising initiatives may change that.

http://venturebeat.com/2012/06/26/zyngas-big-unleashed-event-strikes-out-with-investors/

During the event, Zynga unveiled new games including The Ville, ChefVille, Zynga Elite Slots, Ruby Blast for mobile, and Matching with Friends on iOS. It also described new features such as synchronous multiplayer play for its Zynga with Friends Network. And it offered a glimpse of FarmVille 2. Some observers dismissed these titles as derivative and unoriginal.

Beyond its own games, Zynga described games it will publish for other developers. It unveiled the Zynga applications programming interface (API) for speedy and more efficient third-party games, and it talked about four new third-party developers on its Zynga Partners platform, including 50 Cubes, Majesco, and Portalarium.

Delaware likely to be the second state to regulate online poker, Gambling911 | Poker & eGaming News | Scoop.it

Delaware is likely to be viewed as the state that opens up the floodgates as it pertains to legalized intrastate (and multi-state compacts) online poker.

House Bill 333 is projected to generate $7.75 million in new state revenues. Individuals from other states will be unable to gain access to Delaware’s online gambling websites. It remains to be seen if the First State can sustain a viable player pool for online poker, with just about 800 000 inhabitans.

Although Nevada gaming officials have pegged December or early 2013 as the anticipated date of online poker sites to be up and running in the Silver State, South Point Poker is looking at transitioning to real money play as early as September.

SouthPointPoker.com has been online since October, but failed to generate the player numbers that Gaughan was hoping for. He blames some of the problem on Zen Entertainment, the company he partnered with to supply the online poker platform. South Point has since located a new gaming platform provider and the site will focus on only poker at this time, but the development of casino games are in the pipeline.

Investigation of leading Republican casino money man, Las Vegas Sun

Investigation of leading Republican casino money man, Las Vegas Sun | Poker & eGaming News | Scoop.it

Some of the methods Adelson used in Macau to save his company and help build a personal fortune estimated at $25 billion have come under expanding scrutiny by federal and Nevada investigators, according to people familiar with both inquiries.

The company's general counsel and an outside law firm warned that the arrangement could violate the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. It is unknown whether Adelson was aware of these warnings. The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act bars American companies from paying foreign officials to "affect or influence any act or decision" for business gain.

The internal Las Vegas Sands documents were obtained by reporters working for the University of California's Investigative Reporting Program as part of an ongoing collaboration with ProPublica and PBS Frontline. The documents shed new light on an issue separate from Alves' work: the company's difficulties in avoiding contact with Chinese organized crime figures as it built its casino business in Macau.

Gambling is illegal in mainland China, as is the transfer of large sums of money to Macau. The junkets solve those problems, providing billions of dollars in credit to gamblers. When necessary, they collect gambling debts, a critical function since China's courts are not permitted to force losers to pay up. Weidner said junkets are a natural result of China's controls on the movement of money out of the country, channeling as much as $3 billion a month from the mainland to Macau. "To Westerners, the junkets mean money laundering equated with organized crime or drugs," he said. "In China where money is controlled, it's part of doing business."

Allegations about the company's dealings with Alves as well as its purported ties to organized crime are prominently mentioned in a 2010 lawsuit filed by Steven Jacobs, former CEO of Sands China.

"Maybe in a roundabout way, foreign money is coming into an American political campaign," said McCain, an Arizona Republican.

http://www.gambling911.com/gambling-news/rachel-maddow-sheldon-adelson-justice-department-would-make-%E2%80%98macau%E2%80%99-probe-go-away-vide

From MSNBC.com:

Discussion about Adelson's motivation for backing the Republican Party usually rotates around two things: his support for Israel's government and his opposition to labor unions. But a new investigation finds that there may be a third motivation: saving himself from a Department of Justice investigation.

http://www.yogonet.com/english/2012/07/19/adelson-fires-back-at-china-prostitution-claim

Prostitution is legal in Macau. But in the email, Jacobs told top Las Vegas Sands executive Michael Leven that before beginning a planned crackdown on soliciting for sex on the casino floor at Sands Macau properties, he wanted to make sure Adelson agreed. Jacobs said in the email that another executive told him Adelson personally approved allowing prostitution "as it would help our overall gaming revenue."

Poker only bill prepared in US Senate, Sadonna Price at GamingLawyer

Poker only bill prepared in US Senate, Sadonna Price at GamingLawyer | Poker & eGaming News | Scoop.it

Gambling Compliance recently reported that just last week, senate majority leader Harry Reid, of Nevada, and senator John Kyl of Arizona has agreed on the terms of an online poker bill. The online gambling news resource did not have direct quotes from the senators but they did quote the executive director of the Poker Players Alliance, John Pappas, as stating that the negotiations are ‘likely complete’.

Pappas went on to state that Kyl views the bill as important to his legacy. He has made a deal and Kly recognizes that to strengthen the law against other act ivies he will carve out poker as the exception. Pappas stated that if they do nothing then they will see what is happening in Delaware which is everything.

The state of Delaware legalized online gambling last weekend their new legislation will allow casino table games as well as poker and video lottery electronic games online. Time is running out for the House to take action so the online poker legislation is very important.

http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2012/jul/19/heller-may-hold-last-piece-online-poker-puzzle/

Heller is striking a unique, potentially compelling-to-Republicans tone when it comes to the politics of the situation. Heller backs Reid’s legislative efforts, but he’s picked a different scapegoat: the Obama administration.

“I think this all started last year when New York and Illinois convinced the administration to change the Wire Act,” Heller said, saying Congress had to tighten the rules regulating Internet gaming before more states put lotteries and other non-poker ventures online. “I didn’t like it nor did many people like the way the Justice Department interpreted the Wire Act ... The only reason we have to do that is because of the interpretation of the Justice Department of the Wire Act.”

His historical hindsight may be a little near-sighted. But for Republicans, it may also be what sells.

Ultimate Gaming predict US online poker in 2013, Steven Stradbrooke CalvinAyre

Ultimate Gaming predict US online poker in 2013, Steven Stradbrooke CalvinAyre | Poker & eGaming News | Scoop.it

Asked to predict a timetable for when real-money online poker might come to the US, Breitling said it’s “going to happen in 2013.” Breitling cited two “watershed moments” for the sector in the past seven months, including the US Department of Justice’s pre-Christmas Wire Act rethink, which Breitling said equated to a “full fledged endorsement” of states’ rights to offer online wagering other than sports betting. The other event was Nevada “continuing its leadership position” among states by issuing the nation’s first interactive gambling licenses.

Breitling says his company “would prefer a federal bill for poker-only,” a preference threatened by other states like Delaware and New Jersey, which were moving “super fast” to introduce “full-blown” online gambling.

UFC corporate counsel Epstein, whose family owns and operates the El Cortez casino in Las Vegas, said “the education process” amongst federal politicians “is continuing.”

Breitling said “millions” of Americans were already playing online in “the most unsafe, unregulated environment” and thus “anything would be better than what exists today.” Breitling played the “consumer protection” card, which he said was the product of “technology, process and law.” Breitling said the “proven operators” in Nevada (like, er, himself) were the only ones who could be counted on to “respect” the regulatory “line drawn in the sand” to prevent abuses like minors playing online.

When Ralston brought up Las Vegas Sands CEO Sheldon Adelson’s vociferous opposition to online gambling over concerns that the existing technology wasn’t sufficient to block children from accessing the sites, Epstein basically called Adelson an old fogey who doesn’t understand the internet.

Gamification is revolutionizing education, Dean Takahashi at VentureBeat | Poker & eGaming News | Scoop.it

The game industry and nonprofits are teaming up to create a video game design lab that will do research on engaging students and measuring learning. It’s part of a broader “gamification” trend toward making education as fun and engaging as playing games. The new Games, Learning and Assessment (GLASS) Lab will be supported by $10.3 million in grants.

Based at EA’s global headquarters in Redwood City, Calif., the lab will integrate state-based educational standards and measure learning by modifying popular games or creating original games. Once those products are complete, they will be made available to middle and high school students, school districts, and families at little or no cost. The lab was announced at the Aspen Ideas Festival in Colorado today.

The GLASS Lab acknowledges that there is a major shift in the way students learn and acquire knowledge. Students today are expected to learn skills such as creative problem solving, collaboration, systems thinking, and mastering new technologies. Games are good for that, and they can give teachers and parents real-time feedback on student progress.

New York casino outstrip the rest of the US, Simon Liddle InterGame

Resorts World New York, the $800m casino complex operated by Genting, claims to have been the most lucrative slot operation in the whole of the US in May. The casino, which is not permitted to operate table games, generated gross gaming revenues of $57.5m in May, outpacing Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun at $55.5m. It also claims to have surpassed the slot gaming revenue generated by casinos in Las Vegas, Pennsylvania and Atlantic City.

The property was opened in October 2011 at the state’s Aqueduct racetrack. Under an agreement with the State of New York, 70 per cent of Resorts World’s monthly gaming revenues goes to education, the horse racing industry and other state entities.

Resorts World contributed $40m to the state in May, compared with the $30m contributed to Nevada by the 41 Las Vegas Strip casinos combined. To date, the casino has contributed $252m in taxes to the state. This arrangement is seen as key to the full legalisation of casinos in New York, which will require an amendment to the constitution approved by a public referendum. Proposals include licensing up to seven full-scale casinos.
