Real money gambling will not save Zynga, Jeff John Roberts GigaOm

Real money gambling will not save Zynga, Jeff John Roberts GigaOm | Poker & eGaming News | Scoop.it

Zynga is screwed and its share price shows it.  The game maker’s shtick of selling virtual hay for virtual horses is looking more like an internet fad rather than a viable business model. Meanwhile, Zynga’s recent games have been a flop and its longtime ally, Facebook, is looking for new partners.

According to Chris Griffin, CEO of gambling hub Betable, the winners and losers in the internet gambling market are being determined very quickly and Zynga will be hard-pressed to catch up. Griffin points to the mobile launch this week of Big Fish Casino — a game that lets people gamble on their iPhone in places like the U.K. The presence of these rivals mean there could be little left for Zynga.

“Big Fish has a six to nine month head start on Zynga … It’s a false notion that gambling will save them because the valuable players are already locked up and there is loyalty there,” says Griffin, who adds that the current population of Zynga users are unlikely to become overnight gambling fiends.

The bottom line is that gambling may be a huge potential revenue stream but that doesn’t mean any of it will go to Zynga.

IGT/Entraction bans poker players in 50 countries - but not Italy, Nick Jones Pokerfuse | Poker & eGaming News | Scoop.it

The IGT Network, formerly Entraction, has expanded its list of blocked countries adding 20 new banned countries.

Banned countries include: Australia, Spain, Belgium, Cyprus, Turkey, Israel, Norway, Russia, Canada, South Africa, China, Ivory Coast, Monaco, Denmark, France and Estonia.

However, one notable omission from the blacklist is Italy: IGT/Entraction apparently continues to allow Italian players without the network nor any of its operators holding a license.

IGT, who purchased Entraction and rebranded it at the beginning of the year, was one of the first to receive approval in Nevada for an online poker license.

The government actions has likely driven the gamblig underground and increased the corruption. Recently a high-profile casino ring was uncovered in 15 towns across the Moscow region. Several high-ranking officials of prosecutor’s offices and the Interior Ministry were involved in the casino operations, which generated $5 million to $10 million in revenue monthly. Running land-based gambling business in Russia is today an exclusive privelege for the organized crime syndicates.

Asian land-based casinos are booming, GamingZion

Asian land-based casinos are booming, GamingZion | Poker & eGaming News | Scoop.it

Macau’s gambling industry resembles an oligopoly. It is controlled by six operators that were granted 20-year licenses. The gambling bonanza continues and these operators rake in tens of billions of dollars annually. This makes them hardly complain about the 40% tax rate China imposed on gambling revenue in Macau.

Singapore is one of the competitors. It taxes the casinos from as little as 12.5 % to still relatively low 22.5%, depending on gambling type (i.e, high roller vs. small bettor). Nevada casinos pay as little as 6.75% on their revenues.

Other countries entering the race for casinos include Philippines, Vladivostok in Russia and  maybe North Korea.
