The Prosectutors General Office in Russia has since the criminalization of casinos closed down 36,490 illegal gambling venues, 420 casinos and seized 550,000 units of gambling equipment.
The government actions has likely driven the gamblig underground and increased the corruption. Recently a high-profile casino ring was uncovered in 15 towns across the Moscow region. Several high-ranking officials of prosecutor’s offices and the Interior Ministry were involved in the casino operations, which generated $5 million to $10 million in revenue monthly. Running land-based gambling business in Russia is today an exclusive privelege for the organized crime syndicates.
