Sports betting slump hinders Italian recovery, Stephen Carter at Casino Choice

Sports betting slump hinders Italian recovery, Stephen Carter at Casino Choice | Poker & eGaming News | Scoop.it

Revenue from gambling on poker, casino, bingo and sports and other products in Italy’s ringfenced online market fell 15% month-over-month during May to €57.5m, from €67.7m the previous month, due mainly to a massive fall in gross gaming revenue (GGR) from fixed-odds sports betting.

Hindered by a turnover tax and narrower choice of markets than those on offer from offshore sites, fixed odds sports revenue fell 56% month-over-month to €7.9m, from €18m in April. The regulator will soon allow licensed operators to offer bets on a wider range of events, as well as virtual bets and exchange betting, in an effort to boost the attractiveness of betting on regulated sites for Italian punters.

Online casino games including banked games such as roulette have been operational since July 2011 across the country, but online slots had been deliberately held back to allow VLT operators time to complete the rollout of their networks of terminals. At present, 38,000 of the eventual 54,000 licensed machines have been installed in 3,500 outlets.

Online casino games produce tax revenues of around 0.6 percent of turnover and gaming machines placed in physical outlets are taxed at between 4 percent (VLTs) and 12 percent (slots), so the authority had sought to ensure that as many machines as possible were installed before the online version of slots were introduced in order not to damage tax revenues.

European Football conceal Italy’s declining betting market, GamblingCompliance

European Football conceal Italy’s declining betting market, GamblingCompliance | Poker & eGaming News | Scoop.it

Italian participation in European football ties saw Italy’s licensed bookmakers receive a welcome boost in turnover, but the Euro boost did little to staunch an overall downward trend, with the figures for the first quarter still registering a substantial year-on-year fall.

Double European clashes between Napoli and Chelsea, Inter and Marseille, AC Milan and Arsenal as well as the first leg of the quarter finals between AC Milan and Barcelona saw the total value of stakes on sports betting reach €376m during March — some 7 percent up on the figures from a year before — according to official data published by the gaming watchdog AAMS. However, the more balanced first quarter figures were still down by more than 12 percent. Once again fat margins helped conceal the underlying decline in betting spend for operators.
