Pros & Cons of Nonprofit Organizations

Pros & Cons of Nonprofit Organizations | Poetry and Short Stories | Scoop.it
A business person looking to start a company may consider starting a nonprofit organization as opposed to a for-profit venture. There are several reasons why nonprofit status is a good idea, but ...
Cassandra Gruber's insight:

Working nonprofit is something I do want to do, but this article gives some good reasons to consider it carefully. Things like more paperwork and lower pay are, to me, a small price to pay to feel I am doing meaningfull work. It depends on the specifics of the organization, but not all are dirt poor either, some are eligable for grants and/or exempt from taxes.

Article - Being an Au Pair - Heavenly Au Pairs

There is more to being an au-pair than just looking after kids or earning
money and even though having been an au-pair will look splendid on your CV it's
not about these things, but about the experiences itself that can make it your best time ever.
Cassandra Gruber's insight:

It's good to get some personal experience stories about the Au Pair system, it offers a more first hand view of the program and its risks and benefits. I should weigh my options heavily, because it is a long term commitment, and if I don't connect with the family it could feel a lot longer. I still need to do more research and make sure if it is the right fit for me.

Is (Community) College Worth It?

Is (Community) College Worth It? | Poetry and Short Stories | Scoop.it
Is community college worth it? The answer is a resounding yes.
Cassandra Gruber's insight:

This article makes me feel better about considering community college. Even if I didn't end up going on to a four year college, after earning my Associate's Degree at community college, the average earnings for someone with an Associate's Degree is only 2,000 less than that of someone with a Bachelor's Degree. It is good to know that if I take a gap in between earning my Associate's and going on to four-year, or don't end up going on to a four-year at all, I will not be stuck in a low paying job with no oppurtunities for success or mobility in a company.

Cassandra Gruber's insight:

Looking into community college is a little scary, because I'm afraid it would be difficult to transfer to a four year university. This article gave some good insight on the good side and the bad side of going to a community college. I think it is most definately worth it given the cost of tuition, and the fact that I can live at home and save on room and board, while keeping my job and saving up. I realize I will be giving up some aspects of the college experience, but it will only be for two years.

Compassion Fatigue: Being an Ethical Social Worker

Compassion Fatigue: Being an Ethical Social Worker | Poetry and Short Stories | Scoop.it
Burnout, secondary trauma, and compassion fatigue are not exactly the same things, and it’s helpful to be able to distinguish among them. Secondary trauma is the reaction to dealing with other people’s situations,
Cassandra Gruber's insight:

There's a lot to think about when thinking of going into social work. The things you deal with, and the trauma you see people experience can take a high toll on your own emotional health. I am going to have to look into jobs that will be less stressful and in which I will be able to feel I am making a difference, so I don't get the sense of hoplesness a lot of Social Workers get.

Poetry Writing Tips - PoeWar

This is by far the most popular article in the history of poewar.com. It is a list of brief tips about writing poetry and the creative process in general. Newly updated.
Cassandra Gruber's insight:

This article has some really good points. As a writer, you have to learn to look at criticism objectively without internilizing. Self-Publishing An E-Book? Here Are 4 Ways To Leave Amazon's 30% Tax Behind | Poetry and Short Stories | Scoop.it
Kindle changed the game for authors by allowing them to self-publish. Problem was, they still had to pay a 30% tax to Amazon and never knew who was buying their books. Now, a new class of direct-to-consumer tools are allowing authors to side-step the Amazon tax and own the customer.

30% tax doesn't seem like a lot, but there are good options to get 100% of the profit your book makes and it should be considered as well! The internet opens up a whole alternative to the publishing process, it's important to explore all of them.

Cassandra Gruber's insight:

This article gives me a lot to think about when considering taking a gap year, either before school, or after earning my associates. This reinforces my initial idea that a gap year will refresh and renew my motivation to learn and earn my degree, versus further derailing my plans for the future. I was also afraid of how my gap year would look when attempting to apply to school, but it's good to know the Admissions officials look at what you were doing for that year, and if I'm spending a year volunteering it should be easy to get back into school.
