Major Labels vs. Independent Labels - ArtistshouseMusic

Major Labels vs. Independent Labels - ArtistshouseMusic | Indie Labels Vs. Major Labels | Scoop.it

Owen Husney, a manager, explains the pros and cons of signing with major and indie labels. Indie labels offer less money to make your record and don't have enough funding for major airplay. However, indies are able to give a lot more attention than major labels. They are able to help the artist build a fan base. A major label is meant for those artists who believe they will be successful. While they offer more money to make your record and offer larger promotional dollars, major labels are bean counters. If the majors feel that you aren't making enough money, they will drop you quickly. Husney points out that there are still some good major labels in the music industry. Also in this segment, he discusses his ideal situation - major labels with indie offshoots.

There are pros and cons to both indie and major labels. With the major labels the pros are that once you sign with them you will have a great promotional campaign and can more than likely sign a deal that is very lucrative. The cons to signing to a major is that they are in complete control of your career. If they feel that you're not generating income they will drop you. The pros to an independent label is that they can help you gain a fan base. The independent labels are usually very well connected with clubs, colleges, and have a lot of pull in cities. The cons to independent labels are that they don't have the funds to promote you as well as a major label can. You won't sign as big of a deal when it comes down to it.

I only felt right using this as the one to write my pros and cons about considering how deep it goes into it. On one side you have the major labels. The pros for them would be having the money to do what they need to do to market their artist, distribution and lots of connections. On the cons side there is the fact you can get buried as an artist, you don't get the same attention as you would under an indie label and if you screw up they are quicker to drop you. The pros for indie labels would be they give you complete freedom as an artist, they give more attention to their artist and they seem to care more about the music as a whole. The one and biggest downside to being on a indie label is the money aspect when it comes to promotion, tours and whatever else you might need.
Marquis Davis's curator insight, November 8, 2015 11:39 AM

With more artist signing independent label deals they are also creating better business ventures between major and independent labels. With the success of some of these independent labels artist it has opened the door for independent artist. Without compromising their art some of these artist have been able to pen partnerships without having to sign to the majors.
