Podcasting is one of the many vehicles we can use to get our message across to our audience of readers, listeners, clients and customers. One crucial component to starting a podcast that cannot be overlooked, is getting the right podcasting gear. You might find podcasting gear to be one of the most fascinating and down-right fun aspects of the whole concept of podcasting. And just like anything else, you can take the high road and make a huge investment or you can try to do it on the cheap. I started out using a really cheap headset microphone that picked up tons of background noise and hum. The Samson C03U is the condenser mic that I’ve been using since 2010.
I’m told there are exceptions, but I’m yet to hear one that impressed me enough to recommend it to you. If you want me to recommend a USB microphone I’m going to go for the Röde Podcaster, which I use when creating video walk-thrus. I use a Heil PR-40 dynamic mic when recording podcasts. To create an audio file suitable for delivery in a podcast, you need to compress your audio into the mp3 format.

The ATR2100-USB from Audio-Technica is a fabulous microphone as either a main mic for a casual podcaster or as a mic for use by guests or in the field. It includes an XLR connector for studio use and a USB connection for stand-alone use. There is even a headphone jack to hear the return audio as you would want with Skype. Best of all, the microphone is available for less than $50US. It's not a Heil PR40, but it's a lot more useful than a Shure SM58.
UPDATE: April 14, 2012. Leo Laporte has just discovered the awesomeness of the ATR2100-USB microphone. At one point during his show, he did an A-B comparison with the fabulous Heil PR40. The difference was not as dramatic as you would think. Via Mike Phillips

You can easily subscribe to the Ms. Ileane Speaks Podcast and listen to it on your iPhone, iPod or any other iDevice. If you like the podcast (I'm sure you will) :) please give it a 5 star rating in the iTunes store and leave a review and let others know what you think about my show. I would really appreciate any reviews or ratings as this will help my show get found in the New and Notable iTunes search listings. Another handy feature provided by iTunes is the podcast Widget Builder which can be used to show off your podcast and other shows that you follow. It's really simple to set up, just give your playlist a title and description, then use the Add/Edit playlist button to search for shows to add to your widget.
