We're all talk when it comes to buying books online

We're all talk when it comes to buying books online | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it

Sainsbury's, which purchased a large stake in social reading website Anobii last summer, announced last week that it would shortly be renaming the site eBooks by Sainsbury's. Leaving aside questions of capitalisation, and why it was ever called Anobii in the first place, it's another effort to solve the problem of book discovery or at least wrest it away from Amazon.

Would You Buy Ebooks on a Pay-As-You-Read Basis?

Would You Buy Ebooks on a Pay-As-You-Read Basis? | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it

The idea is simple: instead of paying for a book up front—which is easy to do rashly with 1-click purchasing—you instead pay a small fee for each page you read. Only read a quarter of a book? No problem: you've only paid for a quarter of it anyway. Of course, it's unlikely that such a model would ever result in big discounts, but that's the financial trade-off.

Data Rights? | FutureBook

Data Rights? | FutureBook | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it

A long, long time ago - well, about four years ago, but back then people were still saying things like “ebooks will only ever make up 1% of the market” and other stuff which now looks a little odd - I suggested looking at the idea that using a book as a data set for research using data analysis tools, and then using the results to create digital tools such as algorithms might be a new derivative use subject to the usual rules of copyright ownership.

Discovery of eBooks Will Never Improve Until Retailers and Publishers Learn to Speak Like Customers | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it

When readers talk to other readers about books, they speak in a language of tropes, character types, and hot button issues. They ask for spoilers and in depth details. They want to know if a character in book B is like the character in book A that they love.

Why Traditional Publishing Is Really In A 'Golden Age'

But Michael Pietsch, soon-to-be CEO of the traditional publisher Hachette Book Group, disagrees. "I think we're in a golden age for books — reading, writing and publishing," he tells Cornish. "And the ways that publishers can work to connect readers with writers now are the kinds of things that publishers have dreamt of doing since Gutenberg first put down a line of type."

What we gain and lose in the future of reading

What we gain and lose in the future of reading | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it

When we link what we read — whether through apps, social networks, or some new thing to come — our experience of the book becomes more than a solitary experience. The model of Thoreau reading alone in his cabin in Walden is not as relevant as it once was.

Gabriela Dias's curator insight, February 7, 2013 7:17 PM

This approach to reading is like the MOOC approach in education: it’s about discovery, experimentation and re-appropriation across a vast network of like-minded people (and along the way, you can learn something and pick up new skills).

Un diálogo a tres voces: editores, bibliotecarios y lectores

Un diálogo a tres voces: editores, bibliotecarios y lectores | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it

The Byook is a unique combination of graphic novel, movie and game

The Byook is a unique combination of graphic novel, movie and game | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it

The latest such organization I’ve heard of is Byook, a French company that was founded in 2009 by three friends who worked in the video game and digital entertainment industries, and they refer to their product as “a new reading experience.” That might be a bit of a stretch, given the number of other small outfits that have lately been releasing similar books and apps. But still, the Byook—it’s designed specifically for smartphones and tablets—sounds interesting enough. It was explained to me as a sort of literary video game that “brings books to life by incorporating graphics, animation, and sound effects.”

On Monday, the Wall Street Journal published a story by Jeffrey Trachtenberg quoting Barnes & Noble’s retail group CEO Mitch Klipper on the company’s plans for shrinking its store footprint over the next decade.
