Amazon, Publishers, and Readers

Amazon, Publishers, and Readers | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it

Back in 2007, when publishers began selling large numbers of books in digital format, they used digital rights management (DRM) to lock their books to a particular piece of hardware, Amazon’s new Kindle. DRM is designed to transfer pricing power from content owners to hardware vendors. The publishers clearly assumed they could hand Amazon consolidated control without ever having to conspire with one another, and that Amazon would reward them by passing cost-savings back as inflated profits. When Amazon instead decided to side with the customer, passing the savings on as reduced price, they panicked, and started looking around for an alternative conspirator.

You'll also be able to add new credit cards to Apple Pay just by using the iSight camera on your phone — no need to type in card numbers. Each card will get a device-only account number, so the actual credit card number is never stored on either your phone or Apple's servers.

Lego Mindstorms: How not to do technology in the classroom

Lego Mindstorms: How not to do technology in the classroom | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it

It pains me to write this, because I love the LEGO people so much. But I’ve wasted two hours of my life in possibly the worst teacher training I have ever attended, and I feel like all those pundits who wonder why teachers don’t use eBooks and apps and iPads better in the classroom might wonder a little less if they went through what I did today. Want to get your new technology into the schools? Take note, and don’t do it this way!

What Should We Expect From Apple at Next Week’s Event? | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it

These days it seems like America’s favourite passtime isn’t baseball, but rather it revolves around speculating as to what Apple will be releasing at their next big event. Generating hype is certainly something that Apple knows how to do, and their event next week is no exception. We will all be tuned in closely on September 9, 2014 –but in the meantime, there are a few decent guesses as to what Apple has in store for us.

What Kindle Unlimited is doing for author earnings

What Kindle Unlimited is doing for author earnings | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it

In July 2014 Amazon announced the launch of Kindle Unlimited (KU), a pay monthly plan for Kindle eBooks that took aim at nascent eBook subscription services such as Oyster and Scribd in the US. We blogged at the time about whether its creation was a good or bad thing for authors and publishers. Now that the service is almost two months old and has begun to make payments to participating authors some interesting evidence has started to emerge of Kindle Unlimited’s effects on general eBook prices and individual author earnings.

Publishing venture capital style - or, how most publishers throw money at the wall to see what sticks

Publishing venture capital style - or, how most publishers throw money at the wall to see what sticks | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it

This post comes courtesy of some comments by publisher Hugh Andrew, Managing Director of Birlinn Limited, in the course of the debate on the future for writers after the Scottish independence referendum at the Edinburgh International Book Festival – as well as from my former life in Hong Kong as Managing Editor of the Asian Venture Capital Journal. Hugh Andrew pointed out how most publishing is a matter of paying off a plethora of loss-making works with a few big wins – which, as it happens, is a very similar approach to the classic venture capital model.

More than Ebook vs. Print: The Concept of 'Media Mentors'

More than Ebook vs. Print: The Concept of 'Media Mentors' | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it

This summer, the School Library Journal stoked a debate long simmering in libraryland. Print books or ebooks: Which are better for helping children learn to read? Children’s librarians have strong opinions on the subject, as shown in essays published last week with battling headlines. In one corner of the ring: “The book is far superior to the ebook for literacy.” In the other: “Ebooks enhance the development of the whole child.” The essays came on the heels of two articles for SLJ written by Annie Murphy Paul, a recent New America fellow, that replay the controversies surrounding technology and give eight reasons why “print trumps digital” for reading.
