Whose digital content is it anyway?

Whose digital content is it anyway? | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it
In my last column I wrote about Tesco’s graceful exit from the ebook business, offloading its customers – and their precious libraries – to Kobo. While applauding the commitment to preserving customers’ purchases, it remains a shame that this sort of transfer is even necessary. Storing books – or anything else – in “the cloud” always comes with a trade-off: everything you put there is backed up and presumably safe for a while, but it’s also still controlled by the retailer- – not by the customer who legally purchased it.

After all, both audio and video are a natural for digital magazines, right?

Amazon and Overdrive Giving Up on Kindle e-books in Libraries?

Amazon and Overdrive Giving Up on Kindle e-books in Libraries? | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it
Overdrive has been delaying the Kindle editions of e-books in the United States on titles from major publishing companies. No new Kindle edition has been available from Penguin since December of 2014 and since February 2015, not a single e-book from any major publisher has become available. Is this due to a falling out with Amazon or their current contract expiring? Or something else entirely?

The How and Why of Inbound Book Marketing

Books and Browsers: Collaboration Creates New Possibilities for Digital | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it
In January, I was invited by the Getty Foundation to participate as a library commentator at a meeting of representatives from its Online Scholarly Catalogue Initiative (OSCI). One of the Getty Foundation’s most visible grant programs, the OSCI has, since its start in 2009, marshaled organizational, technical, and museum experience in the service of publishing rich, interactive museum catalogues. But beyond that stated mission, the program has yielded broad insights into digital publishing.
