We're all talk when it comes to buying books online

We're all talk when it comes to buying books online | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it

Sainsbury's, which purchased a large stake in social reading website Anobii last summer, announced last week that it would shortly be renaming the site eBooks by Sainsbury's. Leaving aside questions of capitalisation, and why it was ever called Anobii in the first place, it's another effort to solve the problem of book discovery or at least wrest it away from Amazon.

The New Self-Publishing: Amazon Takes on Etsy

The New Self-Publishing: Amazon Takes on Etsy | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it
What Amazon has done to reshape the publishing industry as a whole is nothing short of miraculous. The launch of the Kindle line of e-readers sparked a revolution in reading, just as the launch of KDP self-publishing completely revamped how books even come into being. Of course, Amazon has branched out in countless ways, offering everything from toilet paper to original content for television since the days when it first sold only books.

Debut eBook Hits 700,000 Downloads on BitTorrent Bundle, Reveals Problems with the Platform | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it
Ever since BitTorrent first announced its BitTorrent Bundle platform in May 2013, I've wondered whether it could prove to be a useful channel for selling enhanced ebooks, digital comics, audiobooks, and other bulky files. While we still don't know if BitTorrent Bundle is going to be able to generate meaningful revenue for authors, I can report today... Read More »

Can eBook Subscription Services Evolve?

Can eBook Subscription Services Evolve? | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it
Amazon Kindle Unlimited, Entitle, Oyster and Scribd all have e-book subscription models that allow you to read as many titles you want, for a low monthly price. Given that there are close to 100,000 books on each platform are people binge reading the same way Netflix users watch television? Do they have the capability to evolve?

An Archaeology of Discovery

An Archaeology of Discovery | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it
The proposition was that “the brand is everything.” It was put to me in such a forceful and peremptory way that I imagined it in uppercase: Brand Is Everything. Now, whenever I am in the presence of uppercase idealists and abstract ideas–Idealists and Ideas–I fly away.

My personal list of what should be top-of-mind for publishers around digital change today

What are the most important digital change issues publishers face?
To prepare for DBW 2016, we need to decide what publishers need to be thinking about and learning about next March, when the seventh annual DBW will take place. It would be extremely limiting for that selection to be based on my thoughts and opinions alone, and we have a process in place to make sure that it isn’t. (More on that to come in the next post here.) But if we were relying on me alone, here’s what we’d be focused on.

Aeneas is An Open Source Tool for Syncing Audiobooks and eBooks

Aeneas is An Open Source Tool for Syncing Audiobooks and eBooks | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it

Amazon's Whispersync for Voice is one of the niftier features for the Kindle platform. It lets you easily switch from an ebook to a matching audiobook and back without loosing your reading or listening position.
It's a nifty feature but it's also one which is difficult to pull off without distributing audiobooks through Audible (and thus giving Amazon a lot of control). But now it's is getting a little easier.

BEA 2015: Content by Teachers for Teachers

BEA 2015: Content by Teachers for Teachers | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it
As the name declares, Teacher Created Materials Publishing is all about producing quality books by teachers for teachers—and the company has been doing that for almost 40 years. The company’s bestselling Time for Kids series is popular with kids and educators in grades 1–5, and to celebrate its launch into the kindergarten market, senior v-p Deanna Mendoza says one of the publisher’s most prolific authors, Dona Herweck Rice, will be signing books today, 9:30–10:30 a.m., in booth C1767. Mendoza admits that even her own six-year-old is “starstruck” when it comes to meeting Rice, who has written more than 300 books (mostly nonfiction) for Teacher Created Materials.

Does Post-Apocalyptic Literature Have A (Non-Dystopian) Future? | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it
The end of the world sure is taking a long time. Ever since the breakout success of Cormac McCarthy's 2006 novel The Road, America has been degraded, devastated, and decimated time and time again — at least, on the page. Granted, McCarthy didn't invent post-apocalyptic fiction. But he helped spark a literary trend that shows no signs of abating.

Looking to assuage his guilt for shopping at Amazon, a developer in the UK has released a new Chrome extension which lets you browse Amazon.co.uk and shop a participating local bookstore.
Just announced on Medium, BookIndy is so new that its accompanying website is still blank, but the extension itself works well enough. When installed, the extension pulls data from whatever book listing you're browsing on Amazon.co.uk and checks to see if the book can be found in a local bookshop.
