The Byook is a unique combination of graphic novel, movie and game

The Byook is a unique combination of graphic novel, movie and game | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it

The latest such organization I’ve heard of is Byook, a French company that was founded in 2009 by three friends who worked in the video game and digital entertainment industries, and they refer to their product as “a new reading experience.” That might be a bit of a stretch, given the number of other small outfits that have lately been releasing similar books and apps. But still, the Byook—it’s designed specifically for smartphones and tablets—sounds interesting enough. It was explained to me as a sort of literary video game that “brings books to life by incorporating graphics, animation, and sound effects.”

Android accelerates away from Apple -

Android accelerates away from Apple - | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it
A recent article on Android Central entitled “The Insane Pace of Android” encapsulates a lot of what’s going on in the Android ecosystem – and why that should be a first concern among anyone looking to buy or upgrade a mobile device. Apple is basically eating Android’s dust. Especially in dusty Third World countries outside the U.S., which may not be the first concern among Wall Street money guys – either in their stock picks or their buying choices – but which add up to a user base that is dwarfing iOS, and outdistancing it more every day.

First Impressions of the New Kindle Lineup

First Impressions of the New Kindle Lineup | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it
As my flight from New York approaches Denver International and the media embargo ends, I want to share impressions from today’s Amazon’s media demonstration of the new Kindles. My group of about 12 journalists—one of several such gatherings throughout the day—convened at Milk Studios, 450 West 15th Street, for a little more than two hours of presentations and time to try the devices and chat ask questions. It was a beautiful, sunny day on Manhattan, and we began on the top-floor patio with a view of the Hudson River next to a table with stickie buns, coffee, juice and other treats.

Pirated Kindle Books May Hijack your Amazon Account

Pirated Kindle Books May Hijack your Amazon Account | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it

Here is how the vulnerability works. Hackers have been injecting links to external websites in the book’s title or in the field reserved for the name of the author, or in both. The script is triggered when you visit the Amazon Kindle Management page and have used the Send to Kindle Plugin. The Kindle Library takes whatever is inside the book’s title or author fields and inserts it into the Kindle Library web page. As a result, if the title or author fields contain HTML code, this code becomes part of the Kindle Library web page and is treated as if it had originated from Amazon’s server.Send to Kindle remains a very popular function, Amazon has an official version and many 3rd parties have developed alternatives for Android, Chrome, Firefox or iOS. It basically allows you to send documents and eBooks directly to your Amazon account to be read by a Kindle e-Reader, tablet or official reading app.

SIBA 2014: Pietsch, Patterson Dance Around Amazon Dispute

SIBA 2014: Pietsch, Patterson Dance Around Amazon Dispute | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it
During Saturday’s lunch for James Patterson at SIBA (Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance), Hachette Book Group USA CEO Michael Pietsch and the bestselling author spoke to a packed room of booksellers at the Sheraton Hotel in Norfolk, Va. While Pietsch declined to discuss Hachette's ongoing negotiations with Amazon, he told the indie booksellers that "your support means a lot. Our sales of print books are up over 2013." In limiting his remarks about dispute with Amazon, Pietsch explained that giving more details might be construed as signals to competitors, and, as a measure of respect, he wants to keep the negotiation as private as possible. While the publisher's current terms dispute with Amazon has generated a significant amount of press over the past few month, both sides have largely kept silent in recent weeks.

Making Sure your Kobo book can be downloaded

Making Sure your Kobo book can be downloaded | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it

Discussion about the recent changes to B&N have revealed a number of Kobo customers are having trouble with some Kobo books they’ve purchased.  Kobo’s Customer Care department (a misnomer if ever I heard one) will tell buyers who complain that the problem occurs because the book is “ePub3″.  This is actually not the case.  EPub3 books can be downloaded just fine – the problems arise when you come across a (fortunately) rare KePub book.  KePub is, as I understand it,  Kobo’s proprietary ePub format.  If you do buy a KePub book it won’t download to your PC and while it will appear on your Kobo reader (if you have the wi-fi turned on), it doesn’t show up in the files if you connect the device to the PC in attempt to load the book into Calibre.  Wherever the file is kept, it’s not visible to the average reader trying to back up her books.  Library Addict tells me that KePubs can be placed on the PC via the Kobo for PC app but I haven’t tested this myself.
