“Throw in with Apple and see if we can all make a go of this to create a real mainstream e-books market at $12.99 and $14.99.” That’s an excerpt from an email sent by Apple co-founder Steve Jobs to James Murdoch of News Corporation (which owns this site) that figures prominently in the Department of Justice’s looming e-book price fixing case against Apple.

Yesterday, I wrote about how you can call external audio/video files in an EPUB3 document. This works brilliantly in iBooks and Readium, but so far, nowhere else. What happens when it doesn't work is actually pretty interesting. According to the spec, you can add a fallback message, and indeed a fallback photo or link. In this case, I've used the poster image as a fallback image.

There is no convincing technological reason preventing e-book interoperability between different formats and platforms, giving customers a free choice to shop in different e-book stores, a report from the European and International Booksellers Federation has said. But the Federation said open e-book platforms did not suit the business models of the main players, such as Amazon and Apple.

Digital publishing software from 3DPageFlip.com has been well-received by businesses and the public. On Friday, the company discussed its use for creating electronic textbooks at its weekly meeting to discuss the applications of its flipbook software . Experts recently talked about how the electronic textbook will be used in the near future. The benefits of using one in a school are economical and environmental. Institutions save money on paper textbooks and supplies while avoiding the need to throw old editions away, which contribute to pollution.

Google has updated its Play Books e-reader apps for iOS and Android to include support for EPUB and PDF files from outside the Play Store. The new feature has been enabled as part of Google's strategy to unite its cloud services, allowing users to either upload their ebooks via its website, or import them from their Google Drive storage. Google says that users will be able to store up to 1,000 files for free, as long as they are under 50MB.

Pottermore picked up the Digital Strategy of the Year award at The Bookseller Industry Awards, beating an incredibly strong shortlist that included Orion's SF Gateway, Nosy Crow, Kobo, Random House, Harlequin, Penguin and Bloomsbury. I thought it was worth reflecting on the award and why Pottermore won it.

As you might’ve guessed, Earl isn’t your ordinary Android tablet — the team refers to it as the world’s first “backcountry survival tablet,” and it has a prospective spec sheet that certainly lives up to the name. It sports a 6-inch frontlit e-ink display from LG for one thing, as well as an IR touch array (so you can operate Earl with gloves, naturally), and a flip-out solar panel for on-the-go charging, all encased in a 0.6-inch thick water and muck-resistant chassis.

The term “Spotify for eBooks” for ebooks has been tossed around a lot in the past couple years, with startups like Afictionado, Oyster, and Ligimi briefly claiming the monicker, but so far there has been exactly one startup that has come even close to deserving the label. The Madrid-based 24symbols is back in the news today with the announcement of a new distribution agreement.

Sourcebooks and OverDrive are partnering on a pilot program that will allow library patrons worldwide the opportunity to read New York Times bestselling author Michael Malone’s acclaimed novel “The Four Corners of the Sky” in ebook format. The Big Library Read is a no cost program in which libraries worldwide promote from their lending catalog a single ebook to their patrons. In addition to creating a global “library book club,” it’s designed to generate data about the positive exposure and sales influence library ebook catalogs provide to authors and publishers.

For book publishers, apps are problematic. They’re expensive and complicated to produce. The generally accepted price points are very low — often too low to justify the investment necessary to build them. And, unlike in bookstores (both physical and online), publishers haven’t quite figured out how to get readers to discover their apps in the Apple and Google app stores.

Plenty of people rightly mocked the news a few years ago that the Associated Press was working on a plan to "DRM the news." The idea was to put some sort of licensing mechanism together to get news aggregators to pay to promote their news.

The American Association of Publishers announced their latest annual BookStats report today, and while the full report won’t be up for sale for another week or so, I got an early look at some of the data. I’m not allowed to share the full set of data that I saw, but I can tell you it was a shock.

The ebook market’s growth has strengthened bonds between publications and readers, particularly for news organizations that choose to publish their ebooks in-house rather than work with a publishing company. Some news organizations’ ebooks are entirely new writing and reporting, while others repackage archived material as commemorative collections or primers about topics of interest.

I have two business ideas that, if I had the money, time or business know how, I’d make a killing from. The first is a Library Management System (LMS) with a simple, open API, and a search that’s designed for the public. Currently, LMSs are rooted in a monolithoc, local government world of design that’s about 20 years out of date. They’re clunky, closed and difficult to use. Libraries have tons of extraordinary content. A modern LMS would give users and libraries easy access to all of it. The second is a service for local news co–operatives, similar to the Banyan Project. It’d consist of a WordPress theme with a few easy to customise options, such as typeface, colour and logo, support and hosting, and advice on setting up a co–op. All very big society, I know, but a possibly viable model for good quality local news.

Three years after my partners and I decided to leave everything behind and put all our eggs in one basket, after finding partners who walked along with us, after building it into a platform that provides high quality books to more than 175,000 users, and, of course, after having great and horrible times, usually in the same day, we’re entering into a new, exciting stage by means of an investment and distribution agreement with the leading worldwide mobile content provider, Zed.
