Publishers Hustle to Make E-Books More Immersive | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it

"It was bound to happen. The record industry was forced to adapt when iTunes came along. Reluctant film studios made the jump to Netflix and other streaming services. Why Proprietary Ebook Formats Work

Why Proprietary Ebook Formats Work | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it
As someone who has been creating ebooks for more than a decade, I am often asked whether I think Amazon will someday let go of its proprietary Kindle format and switch to EPUB. My response has been the same since the question was first posed to me in 2009: I don’t see any reason why they would want to.

Should e-Reader Companies Focus on Android?

Should e-Reader Companies Focus on Android? | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it

There are many statistics that iOS users tend to spend more money on in-app purchases than their Android counterparts. One of the drawbacks in the e-reader industry is that no major online retailer actually sells digital books on any Apple products. This is primary because Apple takes a cut out of each e-book that is sold. Amazon, B&N, Kobo, and Google all sell e-books on Android though, but should other companies focus on this OS?

The New Self-Publishing: Amazon Takes on Etsy

The New Self-Publishing: Amazon Takes on Etsy | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it
What Amazon has done to reshape the publishing industry as a whole is nothing short of miraculous. The launch of the Kindle line of e-readers sparked a revolution in reading, just as the launch of KDP self-publishing completely revamped how books even come into being. Of course, Amazon has branched out in countless ways, offering everything from toilet paper to original content for television since the days when it first sold only books.

Can eBook Subscription Services Evolve? | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it
Amazon Kindle Unlimited, Entitle, Oyster and Scribd all have e-book subscription models that allow you to read as many titles you want, for a low monthly price. Given that there are close to 100,000 books on each platform are people binge reading the same way Netflix users watch television? Do they have the capability to evolve?

The new platform luring readers into short fiction

The new platform luring readers into short fiction | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it
It remains one of the paradoxes of publishing that while the popularity of essays and shortform writing (or longform journalism) multiplies online, short stories – as books or ebooks – remain one of the hardest sells around. Everyone seems to have time for the latest political thinkpiece or tech industry encomium, but few people spend a comparable time with short fiction.

BEA 2015: Content by Teachers for Teachers

BEA 2015: Content by Teachers for Teachers | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it
As the name declares, Teacher Created Materials Publishing is all about producing quality books by teachers for teachers—and the company has been doing that for almost 40 years. The company’s bestselling Time for Kids series is popular with kids and educators in grades 1–5, and to celebrate its launch into the kindergarten market, senior v-p Deanna Mendoza says one of the publisher’s most prolific authors, Dona Herweck Rice, will be signing books today, 9:30–10:30 a.m., in booth C1767. Mendoza admits that even her own six-year-old is “starstruck” when it comes to meeting Rice, who has written more than 300 books (mostly nonfiction) for Teacher Created Materials.

Does Post-Apocalyptic Literature Have A (Non-Dystopian) Future? | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it
The end of the world sure is taking a long time. Ever since the breakout success of Cormac McCarthy's 2006 novel The Road, America has been degraded, devastated, and decimated time and time again — at least, on the page. Granted, McCarthy didn't invent post-apocalyptic fiction. But he helped spark a literary trend that shows no signs of abating.

BookIndy Chrome Extension Lets You Shop Amazon (in the UK) for Books and Buy Local | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it

Looking to assuage his guilt for shopping at Amazon, a developer in the UK has released a new Chrome extension which lets you browse Amazon.co.uk and shop a participating local bookstore.
Just announced on Medium, BookIndy is so new that its accompanying website is still blank, but the extension itself works well enough. When installed, the extension pulls data from whatever book listing you're browsing on Amazon.co.uk and checks to see if the book can be found in a local bookshop.
