Curating vs. Collecting on Twitter for the Education Professional

NDgrazer's curator insight, January 9, 2013 4:18 AM

Silvia Rosenthal Tolisano has an interesting and highly visual post on collecting vs. curating with Twitter, and on the curation potential Twitter has in store for those involved in education.

She quotes Mike Fisher writing: "Collecting is what kids do when asked to find resources for a particular topic. Usually, it represents the first 3 or 4 hits on a Google search, without meaning, discernment, or connections.

Curating is different. It’s the Critical Thinker’s collection, and involves several nuances (see Figure 1) that separate it as an independent and classroom-worthy task."

Useful. Resourceful. 7/10

Writing Across the Curriculum With The Literacy Design Collaborative

Writing Across the Curriculum With The Literacy Design Collaborative | PLN Resources | Scoop.it

The Literacy Design Collaborative is a network of teachers and partners "building out a template-based approach to the literacy demands of college and the workplace, as defined by the Common Core State Standards." The concept is to give teachers tools (mostly offline but soon to be online) that enable them to transform the Common Core into classroom action by giving teacher the literacy resources to build student's college ready literacy skills through their existing content lens.

The Common Core State Standards reach beyond reading and writing to address speaking and listening.

Through the Literacy Design Collaborative, I'm seeing lots of potent work on these skills, with students becoming more able to do this work and teachers developing new insights into what further support and challenge students will need.

Nocking the Arrow: Classroom Management in a 1:1 Environment

Nocking the Arrow: Classroom Management in a 1:1 Environment | PLN Resources | Scoop.it

"Yesterday, an upset teacher pulled me out of a meeting requesting assistance.  She explained that there were several students in her classroom playing games on their iPads. Her frustration and sense of helplessness was evident in the tone of her voice and the look on her face.  By the time our short conversation concluded, it became apparent that she was blaming the technology for the lack of control in her classroom. Jeroen Bottema's curator insight, August 6, 2013 4:01 AM

"An important job for any teacher is not only developing literacy skills but also attempting to build a love of reading within their students. One tool to help achieve this monstrous task is through your classroom library. While all school's have (or should have) a central library, a classroom library provides easy access for your students and is often utilized on a daily basis."
