This article makes a lot of valid points that can be used in every day on twitter, and in life in general! First impressions are as important on Twitter, and I think that is something many young professionals may overlook in interview and online. Also, I think many people follow their friends on Twitter, even if they are unrelated to their professional career, which can crowd their feed with social related things, rather than tweets related to education. This article also shows that it is possible to use your tweets outside of the Twitter realm, just by presenting your tweets on other social media sites! This seems to be a great checklist for the young professional, helping us utilize a site we most likely already frequent, but enabling us to turn it into a career-helping venue.

The future of learning is ... social By Jane Hart

Social Learning is NOT …• a new training trend• bolting “social” onto a course• upgrading to a new LMS It is a fundamental shift in the way people are learning in the workplace

The future is …. • valuing informal and social learning • integrating learning in the workflow.

The future is …. • recognising YOU can’t create everything your people need • tapping into the growing phenomenon of sharing • enabling the infrastructure for sharing • letting groups organise their own content

The future is …. • helping individuals build their own Personal Knowledge / Learning Networks (PKNs or PLNs) • Helping groups set up and maintain their own communities of practice, etc

The future is …. • helping individuals with their Personal Knowledge Management (PKM), e.g. helping them deal with information overload • encouraging others to curate content to share with their teams

The future is …. • encouraging the use of personal devices • providing workflow audits • offering a performance consulting approach to business/job problems

The future is …. • letting go! • understanding learning is not the end goal, but the means to an end - the end is performance • keeping out of the way of self-reliant learners • helping others become more self-reliant

The future is .. • measuring success differently • moving from quantity to quality • “quantity is an antiquated way of measuring success” • defining performance objectives and measuring how well individuals meet their objectives • moving from LMS to social and collaboration tools/ platforms

Learning with 'e's: The importance of being networked

In yesterday's blogpost Separation and connection I talked about the nature of social media and their capability to amplify human contact. Specifically, I made the point that Personal Learning Networks (PLNs) are enabled and strengthened when we make connections through social media tools. One of the key reasons educators need a PLN is to keep in touch, to maintain dialogue with their community of practice. Never before have there been so many opportunities to make contact with educators world wide, many of whom have wonderful creative ideas to share.

Learning to Be a Leader: Leaders Must Be Curators

Learning to Be a Leader: Leaders Must Be Curators | PLN | Scoop.it

Wikipedia describes Digital curation as

...the selection, preservation, maintenance, collection and archiving of digital assets. Digital curation establishes, maintains and adds value to repositories of digital data for present and future use. This is often accomplished by archivists, librarians, scientists, historians, and scholars. The term curation in the past commonly referred to museum and library professionals. It has since been applied to interaction with social media including compiling digital images, web links and movie files.

Curation as a teacher is vital. Curation as a administrator is vital. Curation as a leader is vital. Curation as a life-long learner is vital. Curation helps us interact with the resources available; it helps us categorize, organize, and share resources with others. In curating resources we learn, grow, and contribute to our professional and personal learning networks in a hugely beneficial capacity that is only outmatched by the reciprocity it produces if done using social media like Diigo, Twitter, blogs, etc.

Free Webinar: Teaching Educators How to Be Entrepreneurs in School

Free Webinar: Teaching Educators How to Be Entrepreneurs in School | PLN | Scoop.it

Today, an educator doesn’t have to quit his or her job or start a business to be an entrepreneur. With new technologies and teaching approaches becoming more accepted in the classroom, educators have more opportunities than ever to assume leadership roles and affect grassroots change within their schools, districts, and states. Proactive educators can create their own online professional learning networks, meet with policymakers, or even create their own teaching app if equipped with the right kinds of skills. To do so, however, they must overcome the regulations and resistance to change common to many environments. Our guests will discuss the tangible skills educators can develop to become more entrepreneurial and effective in their efforts to improve education from the bottom up.
