Claire Brooks's insight:

Personalisation has its basis in and appeals to marketing and consumer theories, with consumer technologies increasingly personalised. However if learning is to become personalised one cannot ask what technologies are to be used but perhaps must ask what the optimal instruction for a particular learner is. Personalised learning may provide the context for assessing the capabilities of e-learning systems, supported by new pedagogies and modes of assessment for understanding learner development.

Peter B. Sloep's curator insight, January 22, 2013 6:55 AM

This is a useful attempt at making sense of the difference between PLEs and PLNs. The PLE is a wider concept than is a PLN, according to Debbie Morrison, the difference being that a PLE really is an environment for learning part of which could be the people you connect to, that is your PLN. Unlike Debbie seems to imply, it would seem to me that your PLN _is_ your virtual professional network rather than being a part of it, but I don't want to mince words. Where I definitely do disagree with her is that PLNs are founded in the theory of Connectivism. Connectivism still has to prove its worth as a learning theory and I would not want to have the useful notion of a PLN depend on the fate of Connectivism as a theory. That said, PLNs are all about social learning, as is Connectivism, so the two are definitely connected. But clearly, PLNs can also profit from Bandura's ideas about social learning, Wenger's ideas about communities and, indeed, the ideas of everyone who has written about networked learning. With these theoretical quibbles out of the way, Debbie makes excellent suggestions about one could go about building one's PLN and indeed, one's PLE. (@pbsloep)

I'm not sure if the "brick and mortal universities" was intentional, but I dig the perhaps serendipitous implication.

+ Nevertheless, the article also offers a nice overview of India's nascent online education movement via Delhi University's National Knowledge Network (NKN).

+ Estimated value of India's online education market is $20 billion.
