Teaching ideas:

Before the lesson, stick one or two word clues such as “Aboriginal warrior” and “Tedbury” under students’ chairs. Pick a table of students to look under their chairs to find these clues. Students try to guess who Pemulwuy is from these clues.

Play the video of the song about Pemulwuy in the interactive whiteboard. Bring out DeBono’s Red Thinking Hat and discuss: What do you think/feel about Pemulwuy? How do you feel about the British people in this song? On a post-it note, students write their answer and stick it under the heading “Red Hat”. As NSW Department of Education and Training (2007, p.1) explains, “This higher order thinking strategy engages students in different types of thinking... also develops student confidence in expressing their viewpoint on a particular issue”. 

Listen to Baxter’s podcast telling the story of Pemulwuy and Me. Students individually think about, what information does the song give? Write the answer on a post-it note and stick it under “White Hat”. In pairs discuss what information is missing. How will we get the information we need? The Think-pair-share activity “fosters a community of learners and can help students get to know their peers” (Australian Catholic University, 2012, p.1).

As a literacy strategy, have students put forward ideas of what to write a letter to Peter Baxter inviting him to the school to talk about his song. Using DeBono’s green hat, students can suggest questions to ask Peter Baxter.

Assessment idea:

Have groups pick from Nemarluk, Windradyne, Calyute, Eumarrah, Tarenorerer, Dundalli or Musquito. Students research their achievements, events, reasons why they were resistance leaders, how they felt about British colonisation and how British colonisation impacted them. Have groups perform a significant moment of the resistant leader’s life and explain the reason. As Gibson and Ewing (2011, p.69) discuss, drama enables students to “empathise with others as they explore characters and situations ... challenge/question and interpret from multiple perspectives”. After each performance, have the audience put on the yellow hat and comment and reflect on what they thought about the performance and what they liked about it.

Hi Peter! Thank you so much for linking me those, I would love to use them in my classroom when I'm a teacher. This is an assignment I'm completing at the moment in finding resources on the topic of Aboriginal resistance but when I am teaching this, it'd be great if you could come into the classroom and talk to the students about the song! That would be my pleasure. I live in Dublin these days so would take a bit of arranging! I'm back in Sydney every few years though and researching how I could develop the song as an educational aid for schools myself. Another teacher contacted me a while ago and said she was using the song in her class in Wollongong. I work in the non formal education sector in Ireland ( and sometimes in Europe) with www.songschool.ie and www.createschool.ie . I imagine you’ve heard some of the competing words that have bubbled up. We’re actually in the greed-driven Capitalocene, the trash-choked Plasticene, the combustible Pyrocene, the self-loathing Misanthropocene, the testosterone-dominated Manthropocene—even the Obscene. There’s some merit as well as weakness in every label, including the word that sparked it all.

The anthropocene (both the word and the unfolding age) has so much Rorschach-like plasticity that all I can offer as guidance are my informed but subjective reflections based on what I’ve learned and unlearned in my long, quirky journey. I’d argue that what matters most is not resolving some common meaning so much as engaging in deeply felt discussions, fresh lines of inquiry, and new proposals for sustaining the human journey—all of which have been sparked by the emergence of this concept.

Abstract

One of the most significant paradigm shifts in membrane remodeling is the emerging view that membrane transformation is not exclusively controlled by cytoskeletal rearrangement, but also by biophysical constraints, adhesive forces, membrane curvature and compaction. One of the most exquisite examples of membrane remodeling is myelination. The advent of myelin was instrumental in advancing the nervous system during vertebrate evolution. With more rapid and efficient communication between neurons, faster and more complex computations could be performed in a given time and space. Our knowledge of how myelin-forming oligodendrocytes select and wrap axons has been limited by insufficient spatial and temporal resolution. By virtue of recent technological advances, progress has clarified longstanding controversies in the field. Here we review insights into myelination, from target selection to axon wrapping and membrane compaction, and discuss how understanding these processes has unexpectedly opened new avenues of insight into myelination-centered mechanisms of neural plasticity.

Interactions between trees and microorganisms are tremendously complex and the multispecies networks resulting from these associations have consequences for plant growth and productivity. However, a more holistic view is needed to better understand trees as ecosystems and superorganisms, where many interacting species contribute to the overall stability of the system. While much progress has been made on microbial communities associated with individual tree niches and the molecular interactions between model symbiotic partners, there is still a lack of knowledge of the multi-component interactions necessary for holistic ecosystem-level understanding. We review recent studies in Populus to emphasize the importance of such holistic efforts across the leaf, stem and rooting zones, and discuss prospects for future research in these important ecosystems.

The classic understanding of organisms focuses on genes as the main source of species evolution and diversification. The recent concept of genetic accommodation questions this gene centric view by emphasizing the importance of phenotypic plasticity on evolutionary trajectories. Recent discoveries on epigenetics and symbiotic microbiota demonstrated their deep impact on plant survival, adaptation and evolution thus suggesting a novel comprehension of the plant phenotype. In addition, interplays between these two phenomena controlling plant plasticity can be suggested. Because epigenetic and plant-associated (micro-) organisms are both key sources of phenotypic variation allowing environmental adjustments, we argue that they must be considered in terms of evolution. This 'non-conventional' set of mediators of phenotypic variation can be seen as a toolbox for plant adaptation to environment over short, medium and long time-scales.

After a century of incremental research, technological advances, coupled with a need for sustainable crop yield increases, have reinvigorated the study of beneficial plant–microbe interactions with attention focused on how microbiomes alter plant phenotypes. We review recent advances in plant microbiome research, and describe potential applications for increasing crop productivity. The phylogenetic diversity of plant microbiomes is increasingly well characterized, and their functional diversity is becoming more accessible. Large culture collections are available for controlled experimentation, with more to come. Genetic resources are being brought to bear on questions of microbiome function. We expect that microbial amendments of varying complexities will expose rules governing beneficial plant–microbe interactions contributing to plant growth promotion and disease resistance, enabling more sustainable agriculture.

It seems that we are definitely heading towards the bio-based society, a new way of interacting with the environment where fossil fuels won’t be needed anymore and “more natural” processes for producing energy, food and materials will prevail. Remarkably, this bio-turn often involves highly advanced biotechnology and strict competitive targets, both facts that challenge our general understanding of what a “more natural way of doing things” is. Politicians, scientists, and companies are well aware of this apparent contradiction but, are they willing to clarify the meaning of this tricky jargon (naturalness, sustainability, circularity…) within the so-called Bio-based Economy? ... 

Anyone with an eye on marketing and communication techniques knows that concepts such as natural, green, sustainable... are at risk of being emptied of meaning and then populated with vague content coming mostly from commercial interests. These terms are often used in a rhetorical rather than in a scientific fashion, leading to a sometimes deliberate misunderstanding and a subsequent distrust among the general public. As a result, the latest advances in biotechnology, as well as their impact on the environment in the mid-term, remain buried in this conceptual confusion, where we are not quite sure whether nature still is what we were used to thinking it was.

The fact is that people tend to have an Aristotelian concept of nature, that is, we usually conceive nature as everything that exists without human intervention. That’s why we are quite a skeptic about considering as “natural” those processes involving sophisticated technology and the modification of the building blocks of living systems. Traditionally, we have considered nature and technology as opposites... Yet nature is now presented in a different way. Biotechnology experts interpret their intervention in nature as an act of mimicry... scientists learn about the tools and methods that nature has been using to evolve... and then they replicate this knowledge in order to go one step further. 

This is the subject of a recent publication... They emphasize the need for a critical assessment of the content of all these concepts related to the upcoming Bio-based Economy, and they choose the term nature as an important example of an evolving concept that has been subjected to constant modification throughout history in parallel to the development of human culture, science, and technology. So the question is: what is nature for us now, in the era of biotechnology and genetic engineering? ... 

Biotechnology has carried out an outstanding scrutiny of nature and living systems in the last few decades. We have achieved an impressive knowledge of how nature works at the molecular level and how we can use that knowledge to give outcomes inconceivable some years ago in the fields of agriculture, medicine or industry. Life scientists have conquered the “molecular plasticity of nature”... and they are willing to improve and optimize its performance. But, are nature mechanisms something to be improved or optimized? ... 


There is the technical way of viewing nature... technology is not a stranger to nature, but the other way around. Nature is an immense laboratory, a biotechnological phenomenon, and we use its own methods as mere plagiarists. Advocates of this position don’t find a difference between the natural and the non-natural at the molecular level and, at the end of the day, human beings, as part of this nature, have their right to own its “know-how” and use it for their own good. Fair enough. Moreover, the promise of less disruptive technologies and the end of the fossil-fuel era give us reasons for optimism.

But on the other hand, there are those who claim that this new bio-based turn is nothing but a new chapter in the story of the industrialized world taking control over nature; an act of avoidance instead of criticism towards the alarming attitude of exploitation and consumerism of recent times. These voices find that behind this purpose of reprogramming nature to achieve a more natural world, there is a powerful tool for industry to continue its large-scale exploitation of natural resources...

La suprématie du discours de l’interface est le discours dominant de la scène performative contemporaine : celle qui intègre les technologies. Ce discours est basé sur la vision dualiste et matérialiste du monde occidental, sur une culture de l’objet tel que l’a identifié Christine Buci-Glucksmann (2003). J’expliquerai, dans la section sur la méthodologie, comment le développement d’une pensée intégrative est nécessaire pour sortir de ces pièges réductionnistes ainsi que pour investir les enjeux de la corporéité. L’approche de l’interface, telle que conçue dans le domaine des arts visuels, a donc été majoritairement importée dans le milieu des arts vivants performatifs.

 

La conception traditionnelle de l’interface qui se situe au croisement entre le technologique et l’humain, formalise une pragmatique communicationnelle dont le but est de traduire et de transformer le corps-langage humain et le langage-calcul de l’ordinateur écrit Emanuel Quinz, qui fait son analyse d’un point de vue des arts visuels et médiatiques, même si toute une évolution du concept d’interface prend place par la suite, il reste que même si le concept de l’interface artificielle se raffine, il fonctionne encore sur des principes de sélection et de réduction, en contrepoint avec le corps qui est comparé à une interface physiologique hyper complexe...

The inland waterways were absolutely critical to the demographic and economic development of the eastern part of the United States, especially from 1820-1940.  Before World War II, Great Lakes shipping exceeded the tonnage of U.S. Pacific Coast shipping (see hi-res map here). World War II and the beginning of the Cold War led to a consolidation of naval power for the United States and its allies, greatly expanding Pacific shipping trade and spurring fast-developing economies countries. 

 

Great Lakes shipping dramatically declined, in part because steel production has gone to lower-cost producers that were connected to the U.S. economy through the expanded trade.  Some could see irony since the steel warships created from the Great Lakes manufacturing enabled expanded Pacific and Atlantic trade that led to the decline of Great Lakes manufacturing and regional struggles in the rust belt.  Still, more than 200 million tons of cargo, mostly iron ore, coal, and grain, travel across the Great Lakes annually.

 

This deindustrialization clearly is a huge economic negative but the environmental impacts for lakeside communities has been enormous.  Industrial emissions in the watershed and shipping pollution in the lakes went down as waterfowl populations returned and more waterfront property became swimmable again.  Still this map of the environmental stress on the Great Lakes shows they are far from pristine.

Plant roots play a dominant role in shaping the rhizosphere, the environment in which interaction with diverse microorganisms occurs. Tracking the dynamics of root–microbe interactions at high spatial resolution is currently limited because of methodological intricacy. Here, we describe a microfluidics-based approach enabling direct imaging of root–bacteria interactions in real time. The microfluidic device, which we termed tracking root interactions system (TRIS), consists of nine independent chambers that can be monitored in parallel. The principal assay reported here monitors behavior of fluorescently labeled Bacillus subtilis as it colonizes the root of Arabidopsis thaliana within the TRIS device. Our results show a distinct chemotactic behavior of B. subtilis toward a particular root segment, which we identify as the root elongation zone, followed by rapid colonization of that same segment over the first 6 h of root–bacteria interaction. Using dual inoculation experiments, we further show active exclusion of Escherichia coli cells from the root surface after B. subtilis colonization, suggesting a possible protection mechanism against root pathogens. Furthermore, we assembled a double-channel TRIS device that allows simultaneous tracking of two root systems in one chamber and performed real-time monitoring of bacterial preference between WT and mutant root genotypes. Thus, the TRIS microfluidics device provides unique insights into the microscale microbial ecology of the complex root microenvironment and is, therefore, likely to enhance the current rate of discoveries in this momentous field of research.

It also seeks to characterize how evolution moulds complex traits, as well as the constraints that prevent such traits from reaching ‘optimal’ configurations. Together with the NR1 core subunit, the NR2A and NR2B subunits form the diheteromeric or triheteromeric complex of the NMDA receptor in the forebrain regions. Depending on ages or states of animals, dynamic changes in NR2A and NR2B can lead to the different mixture of NR1/NR2A, NR1/NR2B, and NR1/NR2A/NR2B receptors in the forebrain. There is a higher amount of NR2B expression in postnatal and juvenile brains, but NR2A gradually becomes more prevalent in adulthood and advanced ages.

 

Based on distinct biophysical properties of the NR2A and NR2B (such as longer channel opening duration with the NR2B subunit than the NR2A, etc.), it has been hypothesized that an increased NR2A:NR2B ratio in the sexually matured and/or aged brains may represent a major genetic factor underlying the age-dependent, gradual constraint on memory functions in comparison to that of juvenile or younger brains. However, it is difficult to test this NR2A:NR2B ratio hypothesis by directly comparing the young animals with the aged animals because there are significant differences in expression of many other genes between those two age groups. Moreover, the levels of NR2A or NR2B expression in the cortex and hippocampus can also be dynamically modulated by individual experiences (i.e. enriched environment, or social interactions).

 

A series of genetic studies have shown that global knockout of NR2A resulted in lesser CA1 long-term potentiation, a moderate deficiency in spatial reference memory and fear memory, and/or significant spatial working memory deficit. This suggests that the presence of NR2B in NR2A−/− mice largely preserves LTP and most long-term memories. On the other hand, genetic deletion of NR2B in the forebrain- or hippocampus-specific knockout of NR2B results in more profound memory deficits and impaired LTP. These experiments, by examining the extreme ends of the NR2A:NR2B ratio spectrum (without NR2A or NR2B), have provided fundamental insights into the roles of the pure NR2A- or NR2B-containing NMDA receptor population under the given test conditions.

 

The initial evidence for the concept that an increased NR2A:NR2B ratio may reduce synaptic plasticity and memory function in adulthood came from NR2B transgenic experiments. Research has shown that genetic overexpression of NR2B in the mouse forebrain can lead to larger hippocampal long-term potentiation (10–100 Hz range, without affecting LTD) and enhanced learning and memory function as tested in seven different memory tasks. Similar memory and LTP enhancement was also observed in NR2B overexpression transgenic rats, pointing to the conserved beneficial effects of NR2B in multiple animal species. Thus, these NR2B overexpression experiments, along with other studies, have provided important evidence that the increased NR2A:NR2B ratio can be detrimental to greater synaptic plasticity and memory function in the older brains.

 

In a recent study, scientists have directly tested this hypothesis and investigated the effects of increased NR2A:NR2B ratio in the adult mouse forebrain on synaptic plasticity and learning behaviors by producing CaMKII promoter-driven NR2A transgenic mice. They combined hippocampal slice electrophysiology and behavioral paradigms to investigate how such overexpression may alter synaptic plasticity and cognition, and showed that the high NR2A amount in the forebrain principal excitatory neurons can selectively affect long-term memory formation. But surprisingly, instead of the predicted smaller LTP in the CA1 region of the NR2A transgenic mice, the researchers found that NR2A overexpression selectively abolished 3–5 Hz frequency-induced LTD in the CA3-CA1 synapses without affecting 100 Hz LTP or 1 Hz LTD.

 

This results suggest a novel step by which long-term memory consolidation engages LTD-like process to sculpt, crystallize, and incorporate newly acquired information into long-term knowledge in the brain.

The classic understanding of organisms focuses on genes as the main source of species evolution and diversification. The recent concept of genetic accommodation questions this gene centric view by emphasizing the importance of phenotypic plasticity on evolutionary trajectories. Recent discoveries on epigenetics and symbiotic microbiota demonstrated their deep impact on plant survival, adaptation and evolution thus suggesting a novel comprehension of the plant phenotype. In addition, interplays between these two phenomena controlling plant plasticity can be suggested. Because epigenetic and plant-associated (micro-) organisms are both key sources of phenotypic variation allowing environmental adjustments, we argue that they must be considered in terms of evolution. This ‘non-conventional’ set of mediators of phenotypic variation can be seen as a toolbox for plant adaptation to environment over short, medium and long time-scales.

Raconter notre vie paraît une des choses les plus ordinaires qui soient. Une expression de l’unique, dans le fait où chacun révèle son intime à sa manière. Par-delà nos différentes manières de travailler, nous considérons tous (peut-être à tort) que notre rôle se limite fondamentalement à dévoiler, recueillir et enregistrer des traces supposées être autant de bribes visibles d’une vérité cachée ou inaccessible de nos réels. Les circonstances de la réalisation de ces figures de révélation varient d’un spectateur à l’autre, d’un moment à un autre. Ces travaux personnels accompagnent les moments de crises de l’adolescence, ou encore des évènements mémorables. Cette pratique est ambivalente tant elle est une manière de confession ou d’exhibition, questionnement de Soi par Soi, dans une visée morale et thérapeutique.

 

Essayer de comprendre et rassembler la vie. Exprimer une colère, une faiblesse, une passion. Cela peut aussi être une intention de témoignage du quotidien. Comme objet d’étude, l’intime intéresse autant le sociologue, le psychologue, l’historien en littérature que celui des coutumes, et dernièrement beaucoup d’artistes, en raison de cet intérêt croissant pour la recherche à forme historique sur la vie quotidienne et ses représentations.
