The Road to Language Learning Is Iconic - Association for Psychological Science

The Road to Language Learning Is Iconic - Association for Psychological Science | PLASTICITIES « Between matter and form, between experience and consciousness, the active plasticity of the world » | Scoop.it

Languages are highly complex systems and yet most children seem to acquire language easily, even in the absence of formal instruction. New research on young children’s use of British Sign Language (BSL) sheds light on one mechanism – iconicity – that may play an important role in children’s ability to learn language.

Metaphor map charts the images that structure our thinking

Metaphor map charts the images that structure our thinking | PLASTICITIES « Between matter and form, between experience and consciousness, the active plasticity of the world » | Scoop.it
Metaphor is not the sole preserve of Shakespearean scholarship or high literary endeavour but has governed how we think about and describe our daily lives for centuries, according to researchers at Glasgow University.

Experts have now created the world’s first online Metaphor Map, which contains more than 14,000 metaphorical connections sourced from 4m pieces of lexical data, some of which date back to 700AD.

While it is impossible to pinpoint the oldest use of metaphor in English, because some may have been adopted from earlier languages such as Germanic, the map reveals that the still popular link between sheep and timidity dates back to Old English. Likewise, we do not always recognise modern use of metaphor: for example, the word “comprehend” comes from Latin, where it meant to physically grasp an object.

The three-year-long project to map the use of metaphor across the entire history of the English language, undertaken by researchers at the School of Critical Studies, was based on data contained in the Historical Thesaurus of English, which spans 13 centuries.

Dr Wendy Anderson, the project’s principal investigator, said that the findings supported the view that metaphor is pervasive in language and is also a major mechanism of meaning-change.

Physicists Are Philosophers, Too

Physicists Are Philosophers, Too | PLASTICITIES « Between matter and form, between experience and consciousness, the active plasticity of the world » | Scoop.it
Can instruments and experiments (or pure reason and theoretical models) ever reveal the ultimate nature of reality? Does the modern triumph of physics make philosophy obsolete? What philosophy, if any, could modern theoretical physicists be said to possess? Stenger and his co-authors introduce and address all these profound questions in this thoughtful essay and seek to mend the growing schism between these two great schools of thought. When physicists make claims about the universe, Stenger writes, they are also engaging in a grand philosophical tradition that dates back thousands of years. Inescapably, physicists are philosophers, too. This article, Stenger’s last, appears in full below.

Meta-Collaboration: Thinking With Another

Meta-Collaboration: Thinking With Another | PLASTICITIES « Between matter and form, between experience and consciousness, the active plasticity of the world » | Scoop.it
The two aspects of being human that set us apart from other mammals are metacognition and the deep desire to belong or feel felt. Our sense of needing to belong to a group is an inherited part of our neurobiology, and collaboration with others is the desired outcome. Metacognition is our brains' miraculous innate ability to self-assess, think about our thinking, and reshape our perspectives.

Feeling the emotions of others, social acceptance, and cooperation are critical to our early development of the identity and industry stages. Author and motivational speaker Daniel Pink states that the future belongs to conceptual cooperative thinkers.

La fabrique de l’homme objet dans Lolita de Stanley Kubrick

Beyond considerations regarding the degree of continuity or discrepancy between the original work and its filmed version, Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of Nabokov’s novel fits into a body of cinematographic work that relentlessly probes the question of man’s position in the social, political and intimate sphere, of his often failed aspiration towards selfhood and humanity. Humbert Humbert, as viewed by Stanley Kubrick, appears as yet another representation of the objectified male gradually losing control over the story he at least partially narrates. Still, the character’s progressive dispossession also appears as the condition of his humanistic re-evaluation, in a motion that is characteristic of Kubrick’s constant exploration of the multiple tensions that shape the very definition of humanity, in a paradoxical approach where distance bridges moral, emotional and intellectual gaps, where reiterated contradictions testify to a consistent body of interrogations, where tension, in the end, features as the main condition of humanity.
